- I hope this Cool Flowers garden tour will inspire you to give hardy annuals a try. I learned this concept from the book "Cool Flowers" - amzn.to/3aMZun8
When you plant cool flowers depends on first and last frost dates. Whether or not a flower should be planted in fall or spring is dependent on hardiness zone. If a flower is hardy in your zone, it should be planted in the fall. If a flower is not hardy in your zone it should be planted in very early spring. Lots more information on the how, when, and why in this video - • Fall Planting Hardy An...
Here is how I do things in 6b with a first frost of Oct 21 and last frost of April 15th
Directly sown in the fall 6-8 weeks before the first frost -
Larkspur, Bachelors Buttons, Orlaya, Nigella, Bells of Ireland (did not grow this year but works well)
Transplant started inside and planted out in the fall 6-8 weeks before the first frost-
Dara, Sweet William
Directly sown in early spring 6-8 weeks before the last frost -
Cerinthe, Bupleurum, Corn Cockle, Saponaria, Sweet Peas, Starflower, Poppies
Transplants planting out in early spring 6-8 weeks before the last frost -
Snapdragons, Scabiosa, Ammi, Lambada, Foxglove, Feverfew (have tried in fall - usually lose them to moisture), Lisianthus (I'm sorry I forgot to show this. It is currently budded up), Strawflower
There are additional cool flowers, but these are the ones I'm growing this year. Хобби
“He wasn’t nearly as enthused as I was.” 😆 Your sense of humor is appreciated.
Im a new subber so many of your older videos are new to me and im 49 yrs old grown just about every reg plant and succulents, cacti, etc. ive never seen white poppies like those! I can't believe it! Im getting some of those! 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
I totally relate to the husband not being excited as me about things going on in the garden!
Nichole, I live in western part of ky. Summers get almost as hot as Texas, but we are more humid and have damp cold winters compared to Tx., (I lived there in Central Texas 30 plus yrs). Im telling you this for a reference. What I do with Larkspur, poppys, bachelor buttons and zinnias. as soon as the seed head turns brown and dry, I will sprinkle the seeds directly after deadheading right away to the area of my choosing. I let our rain do its job and every spring I have a strong show. I just walk around like fairy god mother with her hand sprinkling them here and there. its kinda fun to see how the combinations work
It was from you that I learned about Cool Flowers and I will be forever grateful. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I planted bleupleurum for the first time thanks to you. I love it for arranging.
Love the pink larkspur! Never saw that before!
Good morning, Danielle. I've been watching your videos for a year now so decided it was time to say "Hi." Four years ago, I moved from zone 9 (California) to zone 4b/5a (Montana). I'm having to learn to garden all over again. Different plants. Different weather. I ordered the Ziegler book you recommended. Your videos are beautiful. You have a lovely and gentle way of explaining and describing things. Best wishes. Carolyn
The flower garden...so cool...the flowers are so beautiful...
Very comfortable environment...
Larkspurs are amazing!
Thanks so much for the tour. It is very helpful to have the captions with the names and also if you planted them by seed or transplants. Look forward to the updates!
Wow, love the black button bachelor buttons.
If it wasn't for you and Lisa Mason Ziegler I would have never have thought to plant out my snapdragons in mid-April (zone 6b). My Chantilly and Twinny are blooming beautifully. My Potomac and Rocket are on sturdy stems and just starting to bud up. Moving onto the next progression...planting them before my first frost. All the information you share is a total "Game Changer" for my garden and I thank you!!
I loved this tour! I have so many of the same flowers in my garden (Thank you, Lisa Zielgler!), and my bouquets have benefited from them for a few months.(Zone 7B Georgia). Thank you, as always, for being such a good teacher and for sharing so much practical information.
You have the best videos on cool flowers I have learned so much thanks for sharing your knowledge and beautiful garden. Here in Oregon zone 8B.
Thank you so much for sharing! This "cool flower" concept is new to me and I so so appreciate your clear, concise videos on the topic. I'm so excited for my summer 2023 as I think my flowers are going to be that much better next year!!
Love love love your garden! Thank you so much for sharing your gift with us all!!
great content! I tried cool flower fall seeding and ohmygoodness! what a spring show! Yours are stunning!
I'm pretty sure that is Fancy'Smokey Eyes'.
I learned a lesson with my autumn sown 'Dara' this Spring, I didn't think it had survived, the foliage looked depleted and dead. I pulled a couple of the plants, but decided to just wait and see if the others may have survived...sure enough, they did. I'll definitely be sowing more this Fall!
Those snapdragons of yours are gorgeous! Thank you for the tour!
All so beautiful Danielle 😍 thanks for showing people these types of flowers. They've definitely changed my gardening world these past couple of years 💐
thanks for info on fall planted flowers being transplanted in garden in spring with success. will try this next season. always learning something from your videos.
Loved and enjoyed your Cool Flowers garden tour, everything looks beautiful healthy and inspiring.
Thank you for showing us around.
This video is super helpful because cool flowers is a new concept to me but makes so much since. I struggle with knowing what time of year to plant seeds to get them to bloom before the growing season is over. Have you ever thought of making a small guide book for us newby's to tell us when we need to start seeds indoors and direct seed? I know you have made videos about it but it would be cool to see it in calendar form.
Also if you choose a plant 2 zones lower you’re pretty sure to grow them. No reason not to push the envelope!!
Thanks so much Danielle. I am in zone 9 NZ and have just sown my hardy annuals etc inside, for the first time so this video is very helpful for timings.
So inspiring to see how hardy these plants are! Keep challenging us to try new things 🌱!
Such a wonderful video! The Orlaya! and I'm a snapdragon lover too! Thank you for the information on what you planted in the fall and spring! I'm going to try fall sowing - I'm in 6b as well in Ohio. I'm going to go back and watch how you planted when it's time for me to do that - now to get my seeds in order and order what I need!
Fabulous information… I took so many notes! Thank you so much 🌻
So inspirational ♥️🌸
BEAUTIFUL I appreciate all your information. You are such an inspiration
Wonderful tour Miss D! Thank you! ❤ Linda
Thank you soooooooooooo much Danielle! Such a delight. Beautiful and encouraging! Bless you dear one.
Your garden is just awesome. Would love to live out of the south to cooler climate zones.
Such beautiful garden. Thank you for the garden tour . God bless
This was super helpful!
Your beautiful flower beds look so easy and carefree. I just love them. Thank you for all the helpful information you provide.
Thank you Danielle for this super helpful video. It really demystified the cool flowers sowing and transplanting timeline. Love your videos!
This was a wonderful video. I enjoyed seeing all the different varieties of cool flowers you grew.
Beautiful flowers. Thanks for the tour. So much to learn.
Gorgeous 😍!
Just so beautiful!
My MIL kept a cottage garden feel to her beds and had many of the the cool flowers. The timing of them and keeping them going came so natural to her.
This is such a great, helpful video. Loved the text on the screen.
Your garden is beautiful!
My delphinium never come back either even though they are supposedly hardy in my zone (also 6b). I'm glad to hear you say you have the same experience!
I so enjoyed this video of your beautiful flowers, and the labels you put on the screen! That is so helpful! I covet all the beautiful colors you have in the sun, as my yard is dappled shade.
Great video, thanks, Danielle!
As usual, your garden is beautiful! Thanks for sharing Danielle. I failed my first year with cool flowers but I’m trying again this fall.
Your garden is so lovely. I look forward to your videos and all the info
This video is definitely a keeper! I will return to it for referencing Fall planting. I want to start some new beds and give these a try! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
So helpful!
Thank you
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful garden. I greatly appreciate the knowledge you share 🌻
Lovely garden
Beautiful!
What an awesome update!! Love to see everything blooming and hear about your planting times.
Such beautiful gardens ♥️♥️
Thank you for the information and the inspiration. I watch your videos every morning to get motivated. Love your gardens I'm in N.H. zone 5 trying to get things going here alot of work but I love it. Thank you again❤
This was such a lovely walk through your beautiful flower garden!!! Thank you for the inspiration!
Your garden is so lush, the new garden at Hummingbird way looks as tho it's been there for yrs. I do plan on fall sowing this yr. I extended a bed last fall, could kick myself for not fall sowing. As they say...live and learn. My ambition was to not buy one plant to fill it, so far that has happened. Now I need the patience to wait for it all to bloom.
This was so helpful, thank you! I am most certainly going to try this in the fall. What a difference!
I struggle with getting early color in my MA zone 6 garden. Fall sowing may be the answer!
Thank you so much for sharing! I found this video to be very helpful.
Thank you for the flowers name on the screen.Everything looks beautiful!💕
Ok, summer has just started and now I'm excited for fall so that I can direct sow some cool flowers! LOL! Thank you Danielle!
Everything looks so beautiful and healthy. I followed your videos and grew snapdragons for the first time and I’m in love 😍 thank you!
Absolutely stunning. Inspirational - strange how we are already thinking about planting plans for next year when it is only mid-June! Thank you so much for sharing
This has been really helpful!
Thank you!
Wow! What a gorgeous cutting garden! I love it! I have mostly zinnias and different varieties of rudbeckia planted as my sunny spots are limited. ( I have a lot of shade) I just love snap dragons. That Bridal pink is gorgeous! Love your videos😃They really make my day! I live in zone 5 central Illinois. It’s already beastly hot here. 100 degrees yesterday!
Beautiful flowers -- I'm zone 4b/5a and none of my cool flowers are blooming yet -- but we have had a very cool spring -- hopefully, they'll start to bloom soon
I still dont have any cool flowers blooming! Waiting patiently!
Very helpful! Thanks!
Thanks. I know more flower seeds I can sow in the fall. I had better start locking and ordering seed now.
Thank you for a wonderful video. Would you be able to do a video for us in the fall, showing us how you direct sow & the plants’ care after sowing? Do you label all the areas to remember what’s where or just wait for the plants to show up in the spring?
This is so helpful! It's fun to see what's blooming for you now as I am one zone cooler than you and can look forward to what's going to be blooming for me in just a few more weeks! I am trying to grow orlaya for the first time and have failed utterly but I will try a fall sowing this year and see if I can get more success. It's so much fun to experiment. Your ranunculus look great! Are they in full sun? Mine are, and even thought I'm in 5b , they are already going dormant and I've had trouble with stems collapsing, too. We had a run of hot weather (80's) over the last couple of weeks and I ended up putting shade cloth over them, which helped a lot. They are in a raised bed, like yours, because I was concerned about them being in really well drained soil, but I think next year I will try them right in the ground. Thanks for sharing all your great experience and discoveries!
Hi Danielle
I’m new to flower farming and my question is; which flowers are one and done; I think oriental lily is one of those; this is the first year I grew one.
Anyway, a breakdown of those flowers that are one and done vs. those the come back again would be super helpful to me. Thank you so much for your channel and all the helpful information you share.
Such a lovely garden! Gives me a lot of pleasure touring it with you . What is that gadget you have on your bird bath?
It seems like you may have a similar climate to England. You can do a lot of things that just don’t work here in Michigan. Of course this has been such a strange growing season for us.
Wow Danielle, it looks wonderful. Thank you for sharing this. I live in England and our climate is very similar to yours so it's very helpful to see. Some of my plants are still tiny! I have one foxglove I sowed in August and it's flowering at about 40cm tall and then my other 5 about about 10cm! Do you know the reason for this stunted growth? Same for a few others of my hardy annuals. Yours are looking fab! Xx
My granddaughter said we don’t have those flowers in our garden.🤔 Hmmmm we might need to work on that.
Id be curious to hear the how why certain ones are direct sown vs. transplant? Could you dina wuck video for spring plsntibg for 5gise of us who missed the fall 👍🏼🤞🏻🙏🏼‼️💚
So beautiful! When you harvest your snapdragons, how long do you think it takes to get new flower stalks that will be ready to harvest? THANK YOU
Such an awesome video! Love it. Orlaya just stole my heart. When you direct sow the seeds, do you mulch over them? All may beds have quite a thick layer of mulch which I am beginning to dislike now as it makes self seeding as well as direct sowing more difficult I think. Do you have any tips/ suggestions for that?
Everything looks FABULOUS! Just wondering how often you fertilize any of these cool weather flowers. I tried ranunculus for the first time, which seemed to grow well, but I got very few blooms. Any advice on snapdragons curving? Mine look as it they grew horizontally along the ground and then curved upright. Some are quite squiggly!!
How far snap dragon plants each other sow in the grown?
Mine are seedling stage as I am in Auz. I think I put too close each other. 😅
Thank you so much for videos. I love all of them. 😍
😊
So beautiful! I’m in zone 5b Chicago, IL - I feel like there’s often still snow 6-8 weeks before last frost. Lol. Do you hoop and cover your early spring planted hardy annuals?
Can you tell me what the silver plant in the background at 3:49 in this video is? Gorgeous!! Thank you ❤
Gorgeous garden, I’m just wondering where you get your seeds from, I live in Australia.
Hi, I have been following you about the cool flowers, and read Lisas book. About to get my seeds under way here in the Southern Hemisphere to plant out in autumn (fall). My question is.... Do I grow seed in seed mix, then transfer to potting mix cells once they have a few leaves on. Or can I start off in potting mix and just leave them to grow undisturbed until I plant out in the garden? Thanks.
I had only 2 of 12 of my direct down seeds germinate. 9b norcal planted 6 weeks before last frost. i had about 15 of 144 seedlings germinate. i wonder if i should have been overhead watering instead of using drip.
What is the silvery/blue plant growing behind the Dara? so pretty!
So Danielle, if I plant larkspur seeds directly this fall they will be ok through the winter and bloom in the spring? It just seems so impossible but who knew...do you have the link for the video you did planting them in fall? I'll look for it as well.
Lovely garden! What’s the secret in growing annuals successfully? I sowed nigella in plugs and they stayed under grow lights but did not survive the transplant. I am very disappointed.
I planted out my foxy foxglove in early March and the leaves have gotten huge but still no bloom spikes.
Greetings from Oz. I am so jealous. So beautiful. I notice you appear not to mulch your beds?
So I have bought some honey wort and some straw flower and I bought the book that you suggested on cool flowers and the package of seeds does not show them as frost tolerate and says plant after a frost but everywhere else I see says to plant as a cool hardy annual so I’m a little confused
The orlaya is gorgeous! Would it work in part shade? Danielle, you have inspired me to try growing more from seed. Thank you for your inspiration.
Zone 4b
Hi Kelly! Thank you for this great question! I have some in morning sun and afternoon shade and they are doing great! I'm not sure if you can see them in the corner of my garden behind the raised beds under the forsythia hedge?
I love watching ur channel i have learned so much. I want to try doing some seeds this year. I was wondering if you could tell me where you order the fancy foxglove seeds. I can not seem to find them and i would love to try to grow them this year. Thanks so much.
Hi friend! Here is where I get mine - rohrerseeds.com/products/foxy-mixed-colors-foxglove
Where do you buy your foxy foxglove seeds from? I cant find them.
DO you or anyone notice that the flowers are openning early. I have a orange lilly opened, my peonies have opened and closed really quick. it seems to be getting faster and faster every year .
