Have them turn the rest of that cable in to a extension cable so you can still park in the shade on hot days most likely you'll never need it but you will have it
Starlink sells an awesome roof bracket and the screws come with it. Permanently affix it to your roof. You can pop the satellite on and off easily. The tripod is impractical.
Less holes means less chance of a leaky roof. AND no thanks to using the roof mount by Starlink, which is meant to be mounted to a building not a thin metal roof on a vehicle . What I did in this video 100% works and it’s removable if needed..
Epic idea Chrome! WAY less cable to house. The guys at Rey Outfitted are amazing. They deserve a McGuyver Award. (Dunno if that’s a real thing. 😆) When you mentioned getting a signal over tall surrounding trees, I was actually wondering if you could mount one of those telescoping rods on the roof like those police buses use to warn cars coming over the crest of a hill to slow down. (It’s a flashing light on the roof of the bus that can be extended 20’ or 30’ into the air. In your case obviously, you’d mount your Starlink antenna to the device before extending it.) You’d need a retractable cable of course, like those garden hose reels that can wind in the garden hose with a kind of spring loaded system - like when you push the reel-in button on a vacuum. That cubby hole where the indoor panel is now stored was a great idea! Nice job! 😉👍
I seriously cannot get enough of these awesome van builds. Your van looks so fresh with that wiring setup, looking forward to the Starlink setup review in the future :) I love the upgrades Chrome. Keep it up!
I knew Ray Outfitters would solve you problems with your Star Link. So, when we hit the road and get Star Link for ourselves I will show this video to my husband for our fix!!! Thank you to you and RayOutfitters!!!!!
Instead of using the foot for the starlnk, just use a pipe mounted to your roof rack the starlink just drops into. The extension cable that other people have mentioned is a great idea too
I assume that they made you an extension cable out or the leftover wire, I find that many times, where I park my van, I need to place the dish 30'-40' away to get Starlink to connect. In fact you could just buy a outdoor rated, shielded, cat 6/7 from Amazon that would plug into your setup for times when needed. :).
We often use all the Starlink cable when we are in heavy wooded areas to get the best signal. However maybe you don’t park in trees because of your solar? Love your videos, thank you!
I knew there had to be a better way to hook up starlink without all that extra cable getting in the way Thanks for solving that problem for a lot of us.
The crazy mod that I'm looking at involves a *permanent* mount of the Starlink up there so you don't have any setup process (or forgetfulness!) whatsoever. People have disabled the motors with the Starlink in the straight up / flat position and used the "Pivot Mount" that Starlink sells from their website bolted to the roof.
Great to see you work around the "problem" with the cable 👍 For the nest phase to make it just a little bit better, mount/weld a small pipe that fits to your starling dish, on the roof rack somewhere. Then you don't have to bother with the original stand and/or put magnets on it.
The fact you are INSIDE a metal box, all waves sent out can bounce back within. Wood doesnt play a large role in any distrubance in that small of an amount of 1/2 inch thickness of wood. You be okay lol Also a suggestion, if you could get an elbow like connection off the back corner for satellite, you could possibly drive with it, if its around same level as other things on roof. Not saying to drive with it anyway but just as a back up for forgetfulness lol
Great that Startlink is using these cat5 cable, pity they use these special plugs. But superb solution this way! Maybe play with location of roof to avoid shade on solarpanels?
Chrome, when it comes to WiFi, if it's anything involving household construction (wood, plaster, dry wall), it will pass through no problem. Where WiFi develops problems is with stuff like concrete or metal. Concrete doesn't stop it totally, but it does dampen it quite a bit, metal on the other hand is a hard stop. That's why phones with metal construction have channels of plastic running through them: it's to allow WiFi and cellular signals to pass through. You circumvented that issue by having a hard line connection between the router and the antenna. As for why that cable (ordinary ethernet, BTW) is so long is because that setup isn't designed for RVs or van conversions. I'm sure they will release an RV compatible setup at some point, though.
Chrome, thanks so much for the video. Can you tell me the brand of your IP68 waterproof ISDN cable junction? I'm in the process of connecting a Starlink and your video is perfect. Getting the right parts is a bit of a challenge. Really appreciate your help.
the cupboard where you tucked the wifi router- just take the cover off and put a piano hinge and magnet latch on it, then if you find the signal isn't strong for Emi, just open the door and it'll clear the obstruction somewhat.
Crome great video and helpful for the DIY crowd until you left out any links to parts and tools used. I get it was Ray Upfitters that did the install, but saying it is easy without providing the correct tools and parts is just frustrating.
Chrome today I saw a Starlink adapter made to fit a Flag Buddy. Its for mounting a flag pole on an RV Ladder. Maybe that might work for your Van Ladder. Or maybe this might be an option for others.
Hey what a difference that makes with the new setup for star link. Chrome I hope you haven’t been effected by the flooding around Nova Scota Canada. Just seen it on the news in Australia. Stay safe mate. Love the video.
So star link works in the back country. That's awesome. Imagine there is a monthly fee of some sort for the service. But wow am thinking I want one now. Lol. I love your channel even without the cool tips you come up with. You are always thinking. 😍 Great video
With all the BS, I’m still Soooooo jealous of your way of life. You get to travel all across Canada. That’s MY dream, one day before I get too old to be able to live the dream!! 😊😎😎
Great video, but the link for the (list of everything) is 404'ed. So what was the gland that you went with? Thanks again for making content for us DIY'ers!
Now you just need to put all that extra cable into a retractable reel (or buy a full one) so you can put the antenna out farther from the van when you absolutely have to, like when you're parked under a metal roof or under cedar trees. (I don't know if Starlink is affected by cedar trees, but GPS can certainly be spotty under them.) Now that I know that the cable from the antenna to be box is just Cat 5, I'd be confident mucking with it and "building it in" to other situations. Thanks for the video.
People have had success disabling the motors on those dishes then custom mounting it flat to the roof. FB groups and RUclips vids have info on it. Mexico Baja race trucks are mounting them flat to the roof of their trucks allowing them to livestream the WHOLE race
I’ve had my Starlink base magnetically mounted to my roof for more than a month now. Highway speeds, nasty bumps, no problem at all. And I don’t even have wind protection from roof racks like you do. You’ll be fine!
There's a magnet kit I believe you get four magnets $45. On Amazon I seen a vanlifer using them on their car to make a shower. They come in black and silver. If I can find the footage again I'll get you the model number. "Laughter as quickly as you get things done it'll probably be too late" smiles.
Smear some Dielectric Grease on those wire contacts...helps to fight corrosion. Ideally you want to use the connectors with the metal around them to maintain the shielding connection
dieltric grease is absolutely useless... unless you use it all the time.... if you just apply it and leave it after that, it just dries out and does nothing.... (picture a connection out on a telephone pole that never gets messed with for years) I have many years in telecom industry and firsthand experience...
Well they say you can use Starlink while your in motion and driving so if you actually install it permanently up there where it doesn't fall off then you don't have to worry about it falling off...
I put our StarLink on the gound. If I run into a tree situation, that may change. Because of the long cable, I have had no problem putting the antenna into an open space. :)
Wicked upgrade!! Be neat if you could house the dish inside of a big clear hard plastic bubble with enough room for the dish to move itself around and just leave the whole thing up there plugged in while driving!
Hey chrome that was an awesome video that was amazing what ray outfitted was able to do with your star link Those guys are amazing thanks for taking us along I always look forward to you and Emi Cruz and Kelli you guys always make my day be safe and have fun 🇺🇸♥️✌️👍🙂🐾🐾🚐🇨🇦
I love learning about Starlink. Paying close attention. I'm wondering how much of an issue are snow and ice? I wonder about that with solar panels too.
The dish has a built in heater, snow and ice won’t affect it. As for the solar panels, the worst is that the dish may block a panel from getting sunlight as certain hours of the day.
Have them turn the rest of that cable in to a extension cable so you can still park in the shade on hot days most likely you'll never need it but you will have it
AGREE!!! 🥰❤
I agree also
I like how they oriented the plug system underneath your solar panel, more sheltered that way
Take the Starlink Drawer cover from the back drawer and put it on your drivers seat / dash... never forget then... Nice install

Hey chrome just so you know the star link base fits into a fishing rod holder from a boat. They could mount easier to your roof rack system

Cut n splice it through your roof like you did your solar. Then route it through your van. Weld n make a bracket to mount you starlink.
did you watch the video?????? sure doesn't sound like you did, at least not past the first 2 minutes...

There's a company out there that makes mounts for these. They're called Star- Mount Systems. You can even use it when you're driving.
Great solution for slack wiring for Starlink done professionally!! 👍🍻 😍🇦🇺
Keep the remainder of the Cat5e and have them patch the ends again so you can (if you have to) set your dish further away in certain locations.
