@@rajunaidu7751 not sure it’s 4 hours my friend I ran a business for 18 months before this and was working 16 hours per day. It wasn’t sustainable but I was able to do it for a short period of time. Would love to know where you found that you only have 4 hours of mental energy? That would be great to know as I love learning and have never read any literature to support that hypothesis. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not true! You can’t mentally work for 8 hours straight. Maybe you can but it’s not sustainable. I used to work as consultant in a technical field (engineering). The majority of my day was occupied by writing worksite specifications, technical reports and service proposals. So basically, being creative in a technical way. I was mentally exhausted at the end of my 40h week. Even though I tried to take an hour long lunch break and some coffee breaks here and there, I felt like I was always reaching the limits of my mental capacities.

Funny this video popped up. Lately, I've been on a mission to try to tap back into that intense creativity I used to have as a child. I miss that little girl who used to run through the forest, barefoot, creating worlds in her head and filling them with characters who would keep me company. I miss the little girl who decided to write an entire screenplay based off of three very minor characters in her favorite folk tale. I hated that as I got older, people always told me that I needed to "Get out of my fantasy world". Those were probably the most detrimental words anyone could have ever told me. But now, at the age of 28, I'm determined to delve back into my "fantasy world". To return to the land that once welcomed me with open arms. I've already noticed that my creativity has been a lot better and I've stopped telling myself I can't do certain things. This sense of creative freedom is something I haven't felt in so many years. ❤️

That advice about boredom is really indispensable. I have to wonder how many creatives lived their life without really creating much because of how the internet took away all their boredom. I used to be really creative in highschool, but because of a combination of mental illness and "never having to be bored", I haven't created anything in a loooong time.

this video made me tear up a bit. i recently discovered I have ADHD and for so many years I had no idea and thought something was horribly wrong with me and I kept pushing back against it. Now that I'm in therapy, and I know and I have support I've been working with it rather than against it. I have immense creativity but it can't flow unless I take care of myself. So daily I probably only spend 2-4 hours in creativity and the rest is for self care, sleeping enough, eating healthy, exercising, being bored, going on walks, watching my shows/movies that inspire me. YOU GET IT HAHA. But this video made me feel seen. So many people around me work for 12 hours a day making videos and when I do that my creativity plummets but now I can see things clearer, I know I am and what I want out of my videos and creativity and it just feels SO MUCH BETTER and more fun. And theres no rules. I create more now rather than feeling forced to keep up with the speed of it all. So thank you for making this. I think it will resonate with so many people.

I have to confess, I'm NOT really very creative... at least not in an "artistic" way. I was drawn to this vid because I was hoping to steal a few tidbits to help me to think more creatively and maybe BECOME more creative. What I have come to appreciate about you is that (while you are extremely creative) you are willing to put yourself out there... to be open and vulnerable. And THAT (plus really great filmmaking) is what keeps me coming back. That's what I really want to bring to my own posts - a sense of authenticity. Some really good camera skills would be nice also, but mainly it is being able to connect with others in a totally real and relatable way, that makes all the difference. As a part time creator, I've had to find ways to stay productive while avoiding burnout. It can be tough sometimes. You try and balance work, family, and video making and it can be hard. But the more I create, the more I find that little breaks and smaller chunks of work fit better than trying to force everything all at one time. My production process is pretty long and it can be frustrating at times to feel like I need to do more, but it almost always benefits me to rest, so that advice resonated with me and validated something I was already feeling. I would add "play with time" to this list. i remember in grad school i would turn down ideas because i felt my time in this unusual space was super limited and so were my resources due to that limited time. I think if you are intentional about making time for boredom, making time for mistakes, repetition, etc., that's a useful mindset. Also, my best ideas and paintings come with limited time too, so there's that as well! that's more of a hack towards thinking less due to time limitations. Essentially, figuring out how to manipulate time so it works for your practice is a key ingredient.

Unfortunately, people in general don't understand how it takes to be creative and how to retain that creativity. Still, there are people who scoff on how being an artist is considered a job or even a career path.
We need creativity to be able to progress and innovate as a society. At the same time, society turns its back on creatives because they do not adhere to a calculated and formuliac system.

I definitely agree with you on some level. I personally struggle sometimes with my creative work. When I create to publish content or further my career, I often forget why I create in the first place. I lose track of this need to express myself and learn about myself through art. Then I get into a slump and my art feels less honest, like a shadow of what it used to be. Then I have to come back to those first principles and only create for myself before sharing anything with the world. It's a struggle to find balance and I guess that's what makes the whole process interesting.

      @susand484 2 года назад

Josh this is so nice what you wrote, touching. I've read it many times. It's honest and astute and what artist can't relate? Well I'm prejudiced, the "learn about myself through art", is a high calling. Just think of the artists who have worked that way. Flipping back and forth because you have to make a living is probably an unavoidable sacrifice that might lead to you figuring out how to do that without getting bummed out. Wishing you the very best. note: Patty Smith writes every morning, always has, even when the kids were young, very early before they got up. That says so much. She never lost track of herself! Obviously.

@@susand484 Yeah it really is a difficult nut to crack. I find myself falling out of love with the craft sometimes and that’s hard on the mental. And I’m new to this whole world so I’m mostly learning. Thank you for the encouragement and also I appreciate the note on Patty Smith. Maybe starting the day by creating for myself might just provide the right headspace to work!

You have to make yourself work to get creative task achieved, but time spent doesn’t translate to creative value. If it isn’t perfectly clear I’m not disagreeing I’m just further expounding on this thought.

I highly relate to the 1st point. As a content manager, my boss sometimes asks me to work on a copywriting task for 8 hours straight... and I can tell this is the worst way to deal with it. I often feel like the mere fact of seating in front of my laptop for hours in an office takes all my creativity away. And I sometimes simply need to take some fresh air or sleep on it to revive my inspiration.

I think you are very right when you talk about time and creativity. I tried to be more "productive" and count the hours of work I was putting in. I judged myself and tried to work harder because I thought I was slacking and it drove me to a direct burn out. I should probably say that I am a musician and a tattoo artist, so both my "jobs" require quite a bit of creative energy. I thought I could do them both (doing music in my "free time", you know, like "normal people") but now I realize that the only way my music will ever have the space it needs, is if I put some boundaries in my tattooing career, or else there is nothing left for me to give. Now I only allow myself to work part-time in tattooing. I have less money but more time, my priorities shifted, and I am honestly happier. It isn't easy and I still find myself giving "excuses" to people of why I "work so little", but I guess I just need to get used to it myself, and when I finally see the results (I am in the process of writing my first full album), hopefully it will all feel worth it. I think it's also true what you say about not knowing how creative endeavours or projects will turn out, I don't know where it will take me, but I am in it for the journey.

This is such an inspiring video! One of my goals this year is to practice creativity for the sake of creativity. Without realizing it I’ve found myself so stuck on being productive that I’ve ignored my NEED for creativity. I teach my kids there’s no need to be perfect at what you’re doing in order to enjoy it but I rarely give myself that same grace. I see more happiness ahead this year. :)

I've been watching your videos for a while. I've found you to be one of my most genuine creators on RUclips. I really appreciate that you are adding further evidence to the idea that we are all inherently valuable just by existing, and that peace can be found when we realize this. Thank you for your work, Nathaniel.

Tied to this is the skill of being able to reinvent one's skillset. So many new industries are being created and old one's automated, that being able to quickly re-skill, and be creative with it (carving a personal niche, a way to stand out) will be a must for the future economy. Yuval Noah Harari talks about this more in his '21 challenges for the 21st century' book.

I was feeling like in a slump not too long ago. This video was perfectly timed. I personally belive that finding creativity is getting harder as we see/hear it everyday coming from everywhere. Then we start to mimic (something you pointed out). Finding your creative voice is a long process, I'm nearly 20 and I struggle to find it. But I'm going to do like you and take this as a long ride.
Also my tia has a saying that's similar to what you belive, "amor fati," she believes "todo es bueno." Really resonates in a similar way.

this gives me an idea for DMN. if I feel bored well being productive, I should then bring my self to an even more bored state by just sitting there doing nothing with no stimulation, so that DMN will kick in and tell me "maybe being productive is stimulating or at least more stimulating then doing nothing."

I like the "creativity is not a muscle". I think things like social media make creative people feel like they have to be constantly putting out new content to feed an algorithm. I've tried that, and it doesn't work for me. It's when I create things on a whim that I am usually the happiest with my work!

  • @chiarakulikova2553

First of all, thank you very much for the marvelous content you have on your channel. I think you are one of the very few RUclipsrs I keep watching regularly.
As per the creativity, I find it very helpful to have free time to stay with myself, without having any external obligations - something like a voluntary lockdown for one or two days. When I don't have to constantly think about to-do-list, household staff or work issues, my mind starts feeling relaxed and recipient to new and creative things. In the everyday life, especially combining working with many other necessary or so-perceived tasks, it's hard to have this "island" for oneself. But since I am a morning person, a method which proves working for me is having the first hour of a day dedicated to myself. No phone, just some morning exercises, writing, reading or whatever I feel would make me feel happy, satisfied and belonging to my self. Even if the rest of the day turns out to be a complete mess, I know I can always rely on my first morning hour. And it's in this first morning hour when I am on top of my creativity and motivation. Idk if for some of you, guys, it works this way too 🙂

Currently reading the book ‘REST’ by Alex Soojung who has similar thoughts on rest and how it impacts our work. Rest shouldn’t be seen as an opposite of work but an ally of it and you don’t have to work for more than 4 hours to get more, you just need to optimize it.
