"Yeah, but there is always someone else out there, more talented, with more gear, who will get those kinds of projects before I do." There is more opportunity out there for strategic artists than you could imagine. Build relationships, prove the worth of your craft, be strategic.
Leftcoast it all starts with a dream my friend, every master was once a beginner, what you want is what you will get, just keep that in ur mind and keep hustling
Such a well-thought-out, step by step, how to get it done video! Thank you. It inspires me to do a fabulous fitness finds video in my hometown of Kelowna.
I love this, Chris. It's INCREDIBLE how many companies and clients would say YES when given a strong proposal for almost anything. People - don't be scared to hear the word NO, because if you ask and are confident and friendly, clients will often say yes. Which is like... the best.
Chris thanks so much for this, I've messaged countless photographers and videographers about how they can afford to travel and none of them ever messaged me back. Seems like alot of them are scared of "spilling the secret" so I appreciate you letting us know how to do that and helping us grow our skills and passion for this.
A lot of Talented Videographers and Photographers out there who has better gears can catch big clients but of course it's not all about the gear, it's the person behind the camera and his wide ideas and imaginations that can put him on the same level. Thanks Chris for always sharing your stories and for keeping your faith in us! Like peter, you're one of my Inspirations! Keep it up!
Dude, sometimes I come home from a long day in a corporate office and then the next Chris Hau video comes up. I never ever don’t leave these videos without either a. being inspired b. being educated or c. leaving without a huge amount of respect for you. Keep it up man 👊 peace
Awesome man! I'm in the military and travel around the world on a monthly basis so I always have my travel tripod packed and try to get as much footage and time lapses all over the world as I can so that I can build up lots of b-roll for travel vids. Thanks for the info!
This was seriously a great and all around real explanation. Alot of people kinda keep things secret or on the DL so you are always left questioning. Appreciate the insight man!!
Chris Great Man... You teach us something which really works in real world. Ur experienc speaks through your videos ... Loads of luv man... Great video...
Dude, Chris...You really are the man. You have really inspired me to do more with my work. I think one of the reasons why I love your "Hau to's" is that you really make it simple and "down to earth" how to do this stuff. Thanks bro.
This is just what I needed today!! Thanks for bringing it real, and not watered down that it's easy, like so many do! Between you and Peter, I have a good plan, my editing and filming is improving, and I'm always super excited about my next video or gear purchase!!
Thank you for actually detailing your experience. There are so many travel videographers out there who just give basic ass tips, but your discussion on building your portfolio and the story of how you sent your video to the Huffington Post were very valuable!! Thank you!!
Thank you so much Chris! I am really hoping I can do this myself and you help me believe I really can with your videos. I’m not into the video world yet but I am starting to get photography clients, thanks in part to the honest, detailed and sincere advice that you provide in your videos! Thanks so much! -David
How are ALL your videos so informative and inspiring! Love this! This is where my journey is heading towards - photography and video-wise :) Thanks for the amazing tips!
Really cool Chris. I am getting sick and tired of those Facebook ads telling you they know a shortcut to succes. But this story actually resonates with most of us! We are at the start of the curve and are working our asses of as well! Thanks for inspiring!
Awesome tips, Chris! I took this exact approach for travel photography and can vouch that it absolutely works. Doing the same now for video and *very* close to landing my first paid client. Cheers for the inspiration to keep going at it!
Finally a Hau To!!! Thanks for coming to our city and it was great to meet you and the crew. Finally got my first paid client in Toronto coming up this weekend and a lot of it was because of your tips. Can't wait to get out and travel/make more!
I've been wanting to break into travel photography for years!! Followed Brendon Von Son too, and stumbled across your name. Love you content. easy to understand. Thanks!!
This is such solid advice and so appreciated! This is exactly what I am working towards in my own province (New Brunswick). Also, as a huge fan of puns - I can't even tell you the joy it brought me when I saw the 'Hau-To'.
I love how passionate you sound throughout this entire video! I might try this once I've practiced my film making skills enough and start small by taking an aesthetic video of a local restaurant or shop :)
Hey Chris, Leah here from BC! Thanks so much for making kick-butt videos! I really enjoy your style of photography and your tips and tricks are TOTALLY helpful -I've learned so much from you! I'm so happy to find another CANADIAN photographer like me who LOVES it as much as I do!!! Keep up the amazing work, you're such an inspiration to me! :)
Super inspiring and so great to hear your story. I just arrived at the point where companies started noticing my work and want me to shoot for them. Tho coming from a very small town, they pay isn't that good, but I see it as a way to increase my portfolio and resumé, which is awesome :) Thank you for your videos, Chris!
Really appreciate your passion and energy! I don’t often bother leaving a comment, but this was a really great video… you have inspired me to believe that I can also do this! You’ve made me think that it is possible for me to live a life I love, and love the life I live, doing something I enjoy and been paid for it 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃👍🏾
This was awesome, thank you Chris!! I've been full time in video/photo for almost 2 months now... Scary, but so rewarding and am excited for all the clients I've been able to land. All thanks to guys like you that put up amazing content that I can learn from and implement into my own work. Hopefully we can work together someday!!
Back to New Zealand. When I was there last year, my camera video function stopped working. A known issue with the Canon 700D. Fine for photos but video and live view no longer functioned. I've replaced that with a 77D now so I'd love to go back. However, since I live in Dublin, I might as well film my own city and gain some experience first beyond photography.
Its so worth taking the time to approach people to collaborate.I am off to Vienna in March where I will be working with the tourist board out there- all through me just dropping them an email about what I do and asking them for recommendations for the best lookout spots for views across the city and asking their advice when it comes to photography spots in the city.
Basically I just told them about my trip and what I was planning to use photos/videos for (Instagram and my travel blog) along with links. Then asked for any recommendations of where to visit. I never asked for anything or offered anything, I just asked for advice then we got chatting. Hope this helps!
Yo this was so help full Chris! I just recently shot some video for my high school, and was kinda bummed that they didn't offer any kind of compensation. but I realize that doing this work will get me more exposure and experience, possibly even another client in the future. keep up the helpful videos dude! love them!
Super helpful video. Thank you for the blueprint and the inspiration that this can be done. As a new videographer, you've pumped up my spirits. Thanks brother!
Once again, amazing advice and thanks for sharing your tips Chris!!! 🙌Common Hau to Theme: Sometimes you gotta work for free to work your dream. Awesome job man!
loved watching this and following along with the story.. thank you for sharing with us, starting off is so overwhelming at times :) got my pet to subscribe too😂👍
Chris! This video was the inspiration for me to make and start my own RUclips channel! I would plug my video but I respect you and your grind! Thank you so much for sharing this information to the public and inspiring each and every photographer/videographer out there, keep it up man I love the content
Thanks a lot man for this inspirational video. Very much needed this kinda stuff. Trying really hard to reach at that point and you motivated me well enough to keep going. Thanks a lot..

Canada for sure 💚
South Africa.
Southern New Zealand :)
Hawaii and Israel are on my list. I would bring along @sparkinheart

This is a dream. Being a self taught videographer and dabbling in photography out of Toronto, this is incredibly inspiring.
