Of course he has a different voice than Dio (duh!) but his voice fits as good as Dio's. Both are great singers obviously. There doesn't always have to be "a best" singer or version of a song...
I am sorry but it's not even remotely close..Yes, his skills are great, but he doesn't have such a charismatic voice as Dio had. I can't even listen :(
@@marat2005 That was my point. It doesn't have to be close. It is not an attempt to imitate Dio but simply another rendition. If you're used to the Dio version and expect anyone trying to sing the song the exact same way as he did, you're always going to be disappointed, no matter how good the performance of the singer might be.
This is the most beautiful version of this song since Ronnie. Doogie does this one just right with warmth and lots of soul; Ritchie is surely proud of his and Ronnie's song. RIP big guy we'll join you soon enough!

Ritchie was on fire that night, his playing is exceptional (even by his standards) in every song from that 1995 concert in Dusseldorf. This song included.
Richie absolutely had it going on here. Saw him in Deep Purple many times in the 70’s. He has matured so much at this point. He doesn’t succumb to the temptation to play too much and he didn’t here. As for Doogie vs Dio I look at it like this. I absolutely love the “whine” of a Ferrari engine that is set up perfectly. But that does not prevent me from equally enjoying the “rumble” of a 400ci 65 GTO or of a Dodge SRT Hellcat. No reason to do otherwise.

It shines upon the one
And the day had just begun
One day in the year of the fox
Came a time remembered well
When the strong young man of the rising sun
Heard the tolling of the great black bell
One day in the year of the fox
When the bell began to sing
It meant the time had come for the one to go
To the temple of the king
There in the middle of the people he stands
Seeing, feeling
With just a wave of a strong right hand he's gone
To the temple of the king
Far from the circle at the edge of the world
He's hoping, wondering
Thinking back from the stories he's heard
Of what he's gonna see
There in middle of the circle it lies
Heaven, help me
Then all could see by the shine in his eyes
The answer had been found
Back with the people in the circle he stands
Giving, feeling
With just one touch of a strong right hand, they know
Of the temple and the king

Doogie is underrated as a singer with Rainbow. He holds his own and can do Ronnie era songs.
