CBDCs: the ULTIMATE Means of Financial Control with Surveillance as a Feature

  • This short video was taken from Andreas' April 2023 Q&A for patrons, in response to a question about the effects of CBDCs on privacy and the freedoms promised by open finance tools, like bitcoin.
    Video summary:
Today, we're stepping into the world of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs). Unlike decentralized cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, CBDCs are centrally controlled, and they come with strings attached. They will be used to implement anti-money laundering controls. But these controls aren't about stopping big players from making controversial purchases - they're more likely to prevent everyday folks like us from buying Bitcoin.
But CBDCs are more than just digital money. They're an integrated system of command, control, and surveillance. Money has traditionally been seen as a means of exchange, a store of value, and a unit of account, but with CBDCs, we see the emergence of a fourth aspect - money as a means of control. This shift could have significant implications, marking a kind of 'Nirvana' or dystopian end, depending on how you see it, in the evolution of money.

My orange pill moment is the podcast you did with Rogan in 2016. In it you said that cash is rapidly being replaced by digital currency. So the choice we have is between two futures: Total surveillance with electronic money issued by the central authority, or decentralized money enforced by cryptography.
Everything is playing out as you said.

Thanks for these insights, Andreas. I definitely agree. I think decentralization is the way forward as it offers freedom... and many new protocols address those weaknesses (like high fees and zero-sum mechanics) that might've previously scared people away. Wondering about what protocols you think can pave the way for a DeFi future. What do you think of Sturdy Finance?

This is a very important query for the bitcoin world.
There has been an impressive increase in transaction costs and delays in Bitcoin confirmations and it can be understood that it is because of the increase in transactions related to NFT's, miners crash their servers due to the digital weight of NFT images.
Practically the whole bitcoin world will collapse.
Is it possible for Adreas to comment on this?

Won't work. Is done to fail. Why, because it doesn't allow ilegal transaction, and most of politics are in ilegal markets one way or another. So, it won't work. Other things is in Argentina past crisis of 2001 government used provincial bonds to pay. Everyone accepted payments with that, but at a 90 or 80% rate of its value. I hope your understand my point. It won't work.
It is the last slap of the drowned man. Greetings

haha, I'd love to know which rare sats and inscriptions does he have.
I'm sure he appreciates ordinals for the cultural relevance and adoption they've led, but I'm also curious about his considerations regarding possible consequences and future scenarios they might prompt.
imo, brc20 is just another (very inefficient) way to gamble collecting digital artifacts... but miners are happy and users are being forced to use lightning so: long live the craze!

I hear a lot about how governments will control us through CBDCs but I don't hear much about why that is a bad thing. Wouldn't it be a good thing to be able to spot criminal activity, including tax avoidance etc. I suppose a question to discuss is whether we trust our governments or not. And I have to say that I don't fully trust them, but wouldn't the alternative be anarchism in its chaotic sense rather than social equality?
