I grew up in Queens and I used to date this girl from Manhattan, one day we decided to go to Puerto Rico for vacation and we found other people from the continental US at the hotel, one day at the hotel's restaurant during a gathering someone asked my girlfriend, so were are you from? and she said I'm from the city, and everyone said at once, what city? I just laughed and I said well, what other city is there? everyone shared a giggle, and didn't ask anymore. I felt compelled to share the story, have a healthy and happy 2021 everybody
When I lived in New York, if you lived in the Bronx and went to Manhattan ,below 125th street you went downtown. If you lived in Brooklyn you said you were going to the City. Downtown was downtown Brooklyn.
In the Bronx, if you're going past Harlem, you're going downtown. We never call it the city, cause the Bronx and Manhattan used to be 1. That's why we share the same street numbering system.
I’m from Brooklyn and no lie, everything you said is correct. We don’t pronounce “T’s” when there’s 2 of them. Like Button is Buh-in. And what I realized lately is I pronounce my “R’s” and they sound, depending on the word, like “V’s”. I hear my accent a lot when I say “Senior Center”. It’s Seenya Sentah
Being a Queens native, from Rosedale we dont pay attention to the way we talk.however, the minute we open are mouth it's a dead give away. We don't use r in mother, father etc. We use a but don't realize it. I get ask all the time what part of the city I'm from people ask Queens or Brooklyn. Everyone picks up the accent right away I just never noticed it. But born & raised Rosedale ;>)
Manhattan is my favorite borough and NY is my favorite city even if i’ve never visited it. You’re an amazing teacher, the way you explain makes me love american english even more than i do. I’ll see you on the next video😘❤️
I grew up in Tottenville when we had all of two stop lights, The Stadium movie theater was showing pictures, and teachers used to say (in a crotchity old voice -- I had your father, and you're just like him.) My parents are from out of state so I never got it. Population maybe 2500
it's so wack to hear my accent diagnosed and picked apart like this. I'm like "what no, I don't sound like THAT" and then I say it and boom I sound just like that.
Hello Hadar, You are as fantastic as usually . The explanations you gave about the five NY boroughs : Queens Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island , was interesting! I really loved very much the way you spelled every word ! thanks a lot dear Hadar 🥰❤️🌹
looking up how nykers say mirror....i ran accross you....living in nc right now, but grew up in the bx....i have to say you did very very well....loved hearing you, excatly how i speak....had a great time hearing
So interesting I’m a born and raised NewYorker & I didn’t even know I pronounced these words this way. I thought this was just the regular way to say it lol! Interesting video 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thank you for your debut. I happen to teach English, and I loved the way you introduced the thing. Besides, if I may, I wish to tell you what words familiar do I associate with your beautiful instructional technique here. For example, I use 'production' (how to produce sounds) instead of 'pronunciation'. I use only phonics when I segment words into sounds (never producing an 'en' for 'n,' or an 'el' for 'l'). I'm impressed with how much zealousness you put into video content and amazingly engaging style, and wish to make it up someday, keeping fingers crossed, for a joined collaboration
oh yeah, you know that of all the places in the world in the world I've been New York is actually still feeling like my home town, the old Amsterdam, in a mysterious way! It REALLY felt more like home than for example Brussels or London. At least, I was there in 1991 for 5 weeks, and Miami 1 week which was COMPLETELY different!
Hi, I would like to ask where you would put the stresses in natural speech if we consider "New York City" ? I would put the stress on "York" and "City", but I would like your opinion please. Thank u =)
For me, the Manhattan part of the video got me as for a Finnish person, we aren't used to glottal stops. So, we usually say it as Manhattan, as it's written. And for Brooklyn, most of us usually say Bruuklin
Dude, the nasal passage needing to be clear to pronounce Manhattan is hysterical. I live here forever and never knew if I hold my nose it can’t be pronounced… 🤣😂🤣🤣❤️ Wtf goes in round here…??
Hi Hadar! Could you explain me why some people use the nasal schwa and others the glottal one? I mean is it a matter of different american accents or what? Thanks :)
I've heard New Yorkers say Manhadan. There are other words like this too, I know Ed Helms often turns the tea into a D sound instead of the glottal stop T like in mountain.
Thanks Hadar. I like the way you teach pronunciation. I liked New York and Staten Island and I have question about the Canadian New Found Land and Labrador ?
I am from Missouri. New York, Queens and Brooklyn I say naturally correct.... by NY standards. Manhattan and Staten Island I don't roll form the 't' to the 'n' without the vowel like you do. Overall pretty darn close!
Lmao idk who these “native” new yorkers are saying the only way to call Manhattan is “the city” lmaoooo im a born and bred New Yorker from uptown and DA BRONX. Aint no1 calling Manhattan the city. The five boroughs make up NEW YORK CITY
when I am writing an essay I have problem linking sentences wich I use (and) a lot and using (the) wich doesn't look good and smooth when I read it.Thanks
Holy sh... I can't even say 'Manhattan' correctly 😂😂😂 Fun fact: In Poland we sometimes say Manhattan for estates where are high blocks of flats. Nice video! 😀 Greetings from Poland 👋🇵🇱
A lot of Blacks and NewYorkRicans pronounce Manhattan "Mahatt'n'", eating the middle N completely. Also, some ESL Latino speakers call it "Mahatan" perhaps imitating the way Blacks and NewYorkRicans say it. Some Latinos also call Bronx and Queens, "Bron" and "Queen" eating the X and S sounds completely. Many young people from The Bronx pronounce their borough's name "Da Brawnx". This is from what I've heard living in NYC most of my life.
jsphat81 I’m from NY and I’m black I have never met anyone who pronounce Manhattan like that. If they are, they’re not speaking with a NY accent. That’s an accent imitating NY. If the first N is pronounced the Ts get pronounced but because we try to speak the easiest way when pronouncing a word, we’re not gonna skip a letter and then pronounce another letter that’s causing us to pause just to pronounce it. If that makes sense. I’m not nor is anyone else with a real NY accent, going to avoid the N just to pronounce 2 Ts. We’re lazy speakers. If the N is avoided so are the Ts. It’s too much work but if I’m trying to get you to understand me. Imma pronounce all letters so you can hear me clearly. Not the ones that make me pause
There IS only one way to say Manhattan if you're from NYC. It's pronounced The City.
William Johnson exactly Lmfaoooo

LOL me too. But I’m from Queens. I had a cat Sylvester and I called him Sylvesta haha.
A. D. Lmao. I said Sylvester just like you in my head before I read how you pronounce it lol.
Yeah to me it sounds like “m’n-HA-en”.

If you are from here, you don't say "Manhattan" You call it "the city", but it sounds like: "Ahm goin' intada ciddy".
lol manhattan for nykers is just called the city.
Exactly!
yeah!
I grew up on Staten Island. It is StatNisland, one word
I grew up in Tottenville when we had all of two stop lights, The Stadium movie theater was showing pictures, and teachers used to say (in a crotchity old voice -- I had your father, and you're just like him.) My parents are from out of state so I never got it. Population maybe 2500
Yeah but nobody says the S in 'island'.
So more, stat'n'eyelin with a very short soft D at the end, sometimes no D at all.
What is YOUR favorite borough? Mine is Brooklyn and of course MANHATTAN!
Very easy to pronounce Manhattan....The City :-)
Really
More like Nu-Yawk
If you live in NY:)
I said the same thing...It's "AW'' NOT 'OR'...I thought I was bugging...lol
I have a heavy Brooklyn NY accent and living in bayridge Brooklyn.
People from Boston tend to say Nu Yoahk. (They replace the "r" with an "ah.")
wow pal, you beat me to it xxxxxxxxxxxxxxDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
it's so wack to hear my accent diagnosed and picked apart like this. I'm like "what no, I don't sound like THAT" and then I say it and boom I sound just like that.

I was living in Buffalo NY, but now I move to Syracuse NY. And once I visited Manhattan NY, that was 2021.
I had to subscribe in your channel when you came up with that T by the nose and glottal stop!! THANK YOU!!!🤣🤣🤣
Hey Hadar,
Love your teaching style and yes , you gave a light to New York and we will surely come to see its brightness.
With Love ,Areeba😘
Brooklyn is for me home way from home. I really love it.
Lmao block the air? I never thought about it it’s just how I say it but I guess she’s right lmao
I love your methodology
hood lingo: Manhattan < 'Man'ha iin (no tees)
brooklyn: (always said with deep vice< "BRUKLINN"
the Bronx
Wrong, Staten Island is pronounced “stat-nisland”
