Wow, Paul, this was great to hear. Newer crossed my mind that an organ can run out of air!! But it seems to be possible as you explained.

    • @Geoplanetjane

Before electricity, organs’ air had to be hand pumped. Maybe by choirboys?

HI Paul. Glad that you recorded the Neresheim Abbey organ! I played and examined it in 1983, a few years after it was restored by Kuhn of Switzerland. It has a wonderful, rich sound and an amazingly complicated mechanical key action under the floor! Did you get to try the Choir organ, which plays electrically from the gallery console? Its stops are controlled by the rectangular buttons on the top of the console.

A great demonstration of this beautiful organ. The reverb in this space is amazing and greatly enhances the richness of the sound. The full Hauptwerk is incredible. I especially enjoyed the various flute stops, noticeably the 4 ft flutes. I'm sure this would be a wonderful instrument to perform on when the temperature is warmer and the tuning has been corrected. A great video ! Thank you , Paul .

Thanks Paul for the demonstration. Given that the shape of the organ is 4 separate tower cases linked with three high up smaller bridge cases between them, the mechanical linkage from the console must be very complex if as you say it’s a fully mechanical organ.
Those pedal reeds are amazing in the acoustic.
The organist’s view over the congregation from the console is one of the best I’ve seen.
Lovely high baroque Rococco style monastery church. Hopefully the organ is being looked after even though it’s not played often.

Its winter there and obviously they cannot heat that chuch for historic and actual monetary reasons which does cause multiple problems .... even the best organ in the world will not do well in cold.... I immensely enjoyed your tour of the organ stops.... Doc.

Appropriate that this Abbey is just a small step from heaven itself -- both in visual and (especially) auditory ways. Thank you so much for bringing the latter to us -- even in spite of those few weather-related imperfections!
Now... if the heating system from the "lower regions" could be tapped as needed for the well-being of the organ and the comfort of the organist, that really would be heaven. No need to travel further. 😀
