Good video. The ATF raises quickly. You got about 5minutes after starting the motor to finish this job. Never turn off the engine after filling. The fill plug is a bit tricky to get back in and needs some feeling. Watch out for the exhaust. It also gets hot very fast.
I don't recall seeing in the video, but I suggest you break the fill plug loose first, before draining. That way you know you can get fluid back in. If you have the tools, knowledge and time to repair stripped threads then disregard my comment.

Very useful video. Always good to see a video like this from the manufacturer of the product. A few questions: -What is the kinematic viscosity rating the ZF Lifeguard 5 fluid at 40C and 100C? Oddly, this information is not readily available on the internet. -Is the ZF Lifeguard 5 fluid the same as the Pentosin ATF 1? -Is the ZF lifeguard 5 a semi synthetic or fully synthetic fluid? So is the transmission at 4minute mark a 5hp-18 or a 5hp-19? I was told that my car needs the valve body removed for the filter change. I want to find out before i take off the pan. But I have 5hp-18 in my 98 m3 and was wondering if the filter is at the bottom like in this video? Thanks for the content..

The only fluids we recommend for the 5HP19 are the OE or ZF Lifeguard Fluid 5. We don't recommend trying to match specifications with an aftermarket supplier. If you have additional questions, please reach out to our technical service team at 800-321-0784.
Would draining and filling the transmission fluid two separate times help remove fluid that is still in the torque converter? Starting and running the car through the gears with a foot on the brake after the first fill. How much of the transmission fluid that was in the torque converter will be cycled through to the pan for the second draining?
Thank you for your question! According to our technical services team, a second drain and fill will help dilute the fluid in the converter. It would allow it to run for several minutes as the fluid is continuously pumped to the converter then back to the pan. 100% of the fluid in the converter will be mixes with fresh, it's not possible to drain the converter to the pan without the new fluid pushing the old out. Since the converter is rotating and creating turbulence the fluid will mix. If you have any further questions, please contact our technical hotline at +1 800-321-0784.
Hi , I have passat with 5hp 19 transmission, the car was flooded, and the TCU was dead, the car worked in limp mode, he used it like that for a while forward 3d gear an reverse working fine, after I bought it from him I found the dead TCU, there was a lot of corrosion on the plug also, I cleaned it and after that the car works normally forward, changes gears smoothly but the reverse only works when the engine is idling, as soon as I touch the acceleration it seems to disengage and acts as neutral, if I release the acceleration it goes in reverse, other simtoms, when cold in reverse there is only a bump even at idle and car stops, move from N to R and moves a little and disangages, when hot reverse works at idle, it even goes uphill, other than that, if I remove the TCU reverse seems to work fine, I can accelerate even when cold. Hope you read this
Hello. I need to change the ATF on a Boxster S. If I was filling from new it would take 9 Litres. Draining the oil from the sump will remove approx 3.5 Litres. That means that 5.5 Litres remain in the Torque Converter and transmission. Is there a way to purge the remaining oil so that i can replenish all 9 Litres. My fear is that if I only drain 1/3 of the oil then the new filter will have to still deal with the remaining 2/3 contaminated oil. Thanks for your help,e.
Eamonn Mc Keon Thank you for your question. ZF strongly recommends the drain and fill procedure we’ve published. This method is safe and doesn’t disturb any particles which have been lodged in the transmission. In the fluid changes we have done, we’ve found that we’ve replaced 4-6 liters of fluid. If you have a clean environment, you can leave the transmission draining for a couple hours to get the most out of it. We have noticed significant improvements in shift quality and overall feel of the transmission after this drain and fill procedure. This is the only fluid change procedure endorsed by ZF. Please visit www.zf.com/us for our media center or technical information regarding the fluid change procedures. If you have additional questions, please contact our technical support team at 1-800-321-0784.
I'm very nervous to do this just because my car is running pretty awesome, but I plan on keeping it for a long time. it is approaching 100K miles. A mechanic previously owned it, but he is no longer living and I have no idea if the trans fluid was ever changed. I do not want to cause problems to the transmission by changing the fluid. Should I leave it go until it runs funny or change it out?
Thank you for your question! Our technical service team says it is always a good idea to freshen up the fluid and filter. They recommend performing the drain and fill every 60k miles or 8 years. If you wait until it doesn't seem right, it could be too late. If you have any more questions, feel free to call our technical hotline at 800-321-0784 to speak with a member of our technical service team directly.
I own a 2001 jaguar xj8 and the transmission was rebuilt. I don’t know what fluid they put in it after the rebuild. If I use the ZF fluid when it comes time to replace it will I be ok?
I have a 2002 BMW 530i automatic with 237,435 miles. I still haven't check the plate number but I'm pretty sure it's the ZF 5HP19 my question is how much liters/quarts would I need for a drain and fill including filter change? I plan on doing this step first than drive for about 3k miles and than do a drain and fill no filter. Own this car for 6yrs not sure when was the last time fluid was change.
+trulysick86 Thank you for your question. The transmission part number, which is located on the type plate, would determine if there is an updated version of your transmission. In most cases, the transmission part number hasn't changed but the individual components have evolved over time. If you have your transmission part number, please call our technical service team at +1 800 321 0784 for further information.
If for small top up only, why must transmission reach a specified temperature first before filling? If fill when transmission cold, will I end up overfill or underfill a BMW E70 3.0D?
Good afternoon, thank you for the video, but I had two doubts ... - In my audi allroad a6 c5, tiptronic 5 speeds, the fuel plug of the new fluid is a large, which is also located in the same pan from where has the small plug to take out the old fluid ??? - After placing the new fluid, how long must it leave in operation to reach the temperature of 30 ° ??? I await your help response !!! Thank you very much.
Thank you for your question! According to our technical services team, Yes fluid is added through the large hole. This does require a some type of device to suction fluid out of the bottle and expel it into the fill hole. The fill hole is a stand pipe, the oil must be pushed over the top edge of the pipe using a small hose. When the fluid reaches the top edge of the pipe it will spill over and run out. This is when you reinstall the fill plug and run the engine to warm the transmission fluid. You can find the fill instructions for your transmission on our website, there you will find more specifics as it is different than the BMW process. The only advice I will provide is the be sure the car is lifted with the oil pan level, this is important as the transmission has little reserve fluid. Under fill can cause drivability problems. A hand held infrared thermometer aimed at the pan works well in place of a scan tool. If you have further questions, please contact our Technical Hotline at +1 800-321-0784.

On the BMW E38 7 series 5HP24, if you have an advanced scanner, you can monitor the transmission fluid temperature via OBDII so that you know you've reached 40deg C! I've done this twice with great results (during valve body pressure regulator updating service). Next up is my 840ci with the black label 5HP30! I will be using the special shell equivalent fluid.
@@bmw12347 Because the volume of the fluid increases with temperature. If you fill until it runs out of the hole when the fluid is dead cold, then when it's hot, it will grow in size and be too much fluid (over fill).
@@chamberlin1 That's what I guessed. I watched another RUclips on refill only where the mechanic on wheelchair had to put in a lot with transmission cold. He said it was definitely low. But after he warmed up the car to check the level, he almost gave up before the backflow finally stopped. So perhaps it wasn't low to start with. In the end of the video, he said the transmission fluid is cooled by the top part of the air con condenser. The flow is controlled by a regulator that's shut when cold. Is this a second reason why the level is low when transmission is still cold because some fluid is blocked out on the other side of the regulator? I was further confused by another website. A guy said never to check the level when cold because it will shoot out ie the level will always be high when cold. That's opposite to what you and I believe. He must be wrong. Correct?
@@bmw12347 there's another factor you might be missing, in that I hope you don't mean that cold = engine also not running... If the engine isn't driving the transmission pump, yes fluid will collect in the pan and come out when 'cold and not running'. Engine has to be running and driving the torque converter and pump before you can even begin to assess fluid level... Once running and the system is pressurized, temperature is then the next variable to contend with.
Hai ZF team..good day to all of you..please if you can reply to my question there is one bmw car with ZF5HP19 trany and having problem won't shift from 2nd to 3rd and then tha car goes to limp mode error come out on the scanner is gear monitoring 3rd sometime 4th gear as well as P0734 which i believe slipping clutch right...i ask the owner what he do in the previuos and he mentioned that he use an atf oil for ZF6HP tranny because the guy on parts store told him that he can use the same atf oil as the 6HP tranny... My question is are the tranny already broken or it is still can be fix by drain out the atf oil and flushing with ZF5 atf and drain it again then put a new ZF5 atf oil as per procedure...or maybe you can suggest me the better procedure for this case... Also there is one case where when i drain the atf oil from the ZF5HP19 the fluid won't come out only half liter come out even with the fiil plug open..i try to start the car a few minute then it just come out another half liter..what is the cause of this and how solve it for the fluid to drain all of it.. Hope to here from you and many thanks.

i need my transmission fixed its slipping and i think its needs to be cleaned 2006 Audi A6 3.2 it started a delay in responding when it was suppose to shift gears and reving and not going into gear.
Thank you for your question! According to our technical services team, if the vehicle is standing still with the brake pedal depressed, starting in 3rd could damage the transmission and would be blocked. This is similar to selecting a lower gear at high speed that would cause the engine to over rev, this would also be blocked. All selectable shifter function first pass through the transmission controller where the outcome of the action is checked and if it will cause damage to engine or transmission it is blocked. If you have further questions, please contact our technical hotline at +1 800-321-0784.

Hello, thanks for sharing this useful video. I own a Bmw 540 with the zf 5hp30 transmission. Now it has 195.000 kms. I dont have any knowledge if the previous owner did a trans fluid change and i ve never done it myself. So i have a few questions: Is there any risk to change the fluid at this point if it was never done before? Should i get a ZF rebuild kit just in case? Which rebuild kit do you recommend? I ask you this because i ve noticed a strange shifting between 2nd and 3rd, and from 4th or 5th downshifting to 3rd, is not really hard, but it doesnt feel that smooth like the other gears, and a very few times, it feels hard shifting, always the 3rd gear is involved. Im not sure if that is a sign of failure of the trans, so it needs an overhaul, or maybe the fluid is low, or it just needs fluid change. Thank you very much.
+Vintage Effects It is never too late for a fluid drain and fill. We recommend it as part of your maintenance schedule every 60k miles or 8 years. You should replace the filter and the correct ZF fluid for your application. We do not recommend any other fluids because they may cause shift problems or damage the components. If you are experiencing shift problems already, a fluid change more than likely will not solve your problems. I suggest checking the fluid level and quality. This will tell you in you have any obvious problems. Once this is completed, you can call us on our tech line at 800-321-0784 to discuss the next steps.
Thanks for your answer. I believe, or my common sense says that the fluid level is low, since i ve also noticed when im going downhill or uphilll at around 90kph in 5th gear, if i release the gas, i feel a strong bump, and its never in a different road or speed condition. What is your opinion about this issue? If its too low and considering the fluid is old, should i just refill? Or drain, replace the filter and refill? My zf5hp30 is the black label one. Which fluid do you recommend? Is it Fuchs Titan 3353 a proper fluid for it? Please try and give me more than one option, since there isnt too many ATF brands in my country. Remember the autotrans has 195.000 kms, without any maintenance since the car was new. . .Im afraid to loose the trans after doing fluid change, thats why i ask you so many questions, i just want to be sure!. Thank you very much!
Hey ZF! Quick question, do you know why the "ZF 5HP19" torque converter seals fail prematurely in the W8 model Passats? Any ideas on also mitigating the issue?
Thank you for your question! Our technical team is happy to say that engineering has updated the seal. With the new seal, the failure should be a thing of the past. If you need a distributor to purchase a Genuine ZF converter from, please call our tech service line at (800) 321-0784.
The seal fail because the bushing in the transmission oil pump faied, so you need to replace the oil pump and the converter, that bushing is centering the neck of the torque converter when enter the oil pump, is lying behind the seal that failed. Good luck
Yes and no.. I have used liqui Molly top tec 1200 which meets zf/vw requirements and transmission started shifting rough from 2nd to 3rd. I'm going to do 2nd drain and fill and use pentosin atf5. Hopefully that will sort put my issue.
+Bee ShopCS We always recommend a fluid drain and fill with a new pan/filter and the correct ZF Lifeguard Fluid. It should be done every 60k miles or 8 years.
Thank you very much its 10 years already 220k I am not sure if has been change before I ask the service Advice in Audi, Said i am not advice you to change , i do not know what to do so i ask you thank you very much for ur answer i really appreciated
Thank you for your question! According to our technical services team almost all of the 5HP fill instructions list tightening torque at 35Nm +/- 3Nm except some Audi/VW which are listed at 80Nm. If you have any further questions, please contact our technical services hotline at +1 800-321-0784.
Audis tiptronic should have "lifetime" oils in it. This is confirmed fact straight from audi. But then the question is: how long is the cars lifestime. At least here, cars have 400-500tkm on them and its totally normal. If Audi thinks that cars life is under 100tkm then ofc the oils are lifetime. Also it is not reccomended to just change the oil. You should use the rinse method on tiptronic, where you drain the old oil, refill the new one and start the car, go through the gears few times, then drain the oil again and refill it again. Need at least 15 liters of oil.
This is by far the best one I've seen minus loosening the fill plug before draining. Great video. 4.5 STARS

Hope you read this
Did you use or recommend gasket maker or any sealer for the gasket. I installed but it leaks and have to do the job again with a new gasket.
Did it leak with the new gasket?
This
method is safe and doesn’t disturb any particles which have been lodged in the transmission.
Great. Thanks for your comprehensive response. I'll re-post after the oil change and let you know volume removed.
5-6L however 7.5L ive seen too...leaving torque converter. Including replacing torque converter fluids 9.9L all up.
Hi, I have the same car but with 123k miles. How did it go? I don’t think mine has ever been changes either. Thanks
Which fluid would be used for the ring and pinion on a 1999 boxster with ZF5hp
Do you make an ugraded version of this trans? incase the one in my jag goes out.
One with an upgraded valve body and a drum?
+trulysick86 Thank you for your question. The transmission part number, which is located on the type plate, would determine if there is an updated version of your transmission.
In most cases, the transmission part number hasn't changed but the individual components have evolved over time.
If you have your transmission part number, please call our technical service team at +1 800 321 0784 for further information.
la procedura è la stessa per un cambio zf-8hp70?
If for small top up only, why must transmission reach a specified temperature first before filling? If fill when transmission cold, will I end up overfill or underfill a BMW E70 3.0D?
Hi, could you please share the 8HP oil change procedure video? Thank you!
If you have further questions, please contact our Technical Hotline at +1 800-321-0784.
hey. so only about 4 liters of oil in the 5HP19 audi quattro box?
Hi! i have BMW 523I E39 27.04.2000 what kind of transmission does it have? does it have ZF5HP19? what exactly ATF oil i have to use? thanks for information

Would it be possible to list the few socket types and sizes. By type I mean is the socket a Allen hex, Torx, standard size sides bolt head? I'd like to have this before I begin the work so I know I have the tools to do it. For example:
Drain plug socket type and size -
Pan bolt socket type and size -
Filter bolt socket type and socket-
Fill plug socket type and size -
I think we can all agree that not having a tool midway through a job is..no fun!
- Jeff.
Please find the answers to your specification questions below:
The sockets required for the job are as follows:
Drain plug socket type and size - 5hp19 Hex 6mm & 5hp24 Hex 8mm
Pan bolt socket type and size - T27
Filter bolt socket type and socket- T27
Fill plug socket type and size - Hex 8mm

On the BMW E38 7 series 5HP24, if you have an advanced scanner, you can monitor the transmission fluid temperature via OBDII so that you know you've reached 40deg C! I've done this twice with great results (during valve body pressure regulator updating service). Next up is my 840ci with the black label 5HP30! I will be using the special shell equivalent fluid.
Why must temperature reach 40c? Say for a small top up only scenario, if done when transmission still cold, will i end up overfill or underfill?
@@bmw12347 Because the volume of the fluid increases with temperature. If you fill until it runs out of the hole when the fluid is dead cold, then when it's hot, it will grow in size
and be too much fluid (over fill).
Excellent info
Wher is the diferencial drain plug on 5hp19 fl i can se only fill plug on top
Hello..One question for '99 Boxster tiptronic 2.5L with ZE: -99(A86,00-103); 5HP19, green tagged ; 030053 Serial No: 0175318
The tranny pan filler plug M30-1.5mm is underside of the pan and the factory manual instruction torque is 80Nm.
Your demonstrated pan here is one of filler plug on the side of the pan and 35Nm.
Is this 80Nm right? for my tranny pan?
Thanks
i need my transmission fixed its slipping and i think its needs to be cleaned 2006 Audi A6 3.2 it started a delay in responding when it was suppose to shift gears and reving and not going into gear.
I have an audi 2010 a4 I cant shift to 3rd while brake is held .... Is that OK?
Thank you for your question! According to our technical services team, if the vehicle is standing still with the brake pedal depressed, starting in 3rd could damage the transmission and would be blocked. This is similar to selecting a lower gear at high speed that would cause the engine to over rev, this would also be blocked. All selectable shifter function first pass through the transmission controller where the outcome of the action is checked and if it will cause damage to engine or transmission it is blocked. If you have further questions, please contact our technical hotline at +1 800-321-0784.
Thanks!
where is the fill hole on the 5hp 24 gearbox, cant find it anywhere on my bmw e38 740?
thanks
worst ever You can find an image of the 5HP 24 gearbox at the link below. On page 5 you will find the diagram of where the fill hole is located. If you have further questions, you can contact our technical service team at +1 800 321 0784.www.zf.com/media/media/document/int_print_catalogs_documents/usa_4/5HP24.pdf
ZFServicesNA thankyou
one question: why not while going through the gears not spinning the wheels? Wouldn't that help?
If you spin the wheels, with the vehicle on a lift, you will damage the transmission. You only need to hold the brake and run through the gears to circulate the fluid which will fill the clutches. If you have any additional questions, please reach out to our technical service team at 800-321-0784.
thank you very much for the answer !
Wow, i am curious... How can it damage the transmission? Because there is no oil circulated through the valve body and such?
2017 Chrysler Pacifica - 9 Speed Automatic . There no information about what type of transmission fluid you have to use and how to check the transmission fluid level
@argishti group please contact our technical hotline at +1 800-321-0784 for fluid change information.
good evening
changed the oil in the automatic transmission 6hp19 audi a6 (AWD) through the bottom drain hole pallet sump with the aid of a syringe for oil ... I poured to the level started the engine including rear, 1, 2, 4, 5 and then again refilled oil for the first time ... stoko filled exactly as leaked (took it). proshol day everything works fine and then got into an accident, adoption does not work Error 009 988 for the second and third speed ..
what to do ?
poneli you me?
I use a Motul ATF for my 5H24
BMW e38 740 iL 2001
What do you say about it?
no one cares..................
What kind of oil that fits to my audi a8l 4.2 2011
Abdulaziz Ali 5/40 hehe
where can i buy this little oil pump?
Thank you for your question! Our technical team suggests that you purchase a suction style syringe which is very durable and can accomplish in one cycle what the other could take many, many pumps. These are available at many auto stores as well as Amazon and EBay. If you have any other questions, please call our tech service line at (800) 321-0784.
Good thing they don't show you on which hole you're supposed to fill it back up :)))
Wow, very surprused you responded! Very cool! I will give you guys a call today. Thanks!
The seal fail because the bushing in the transmission oil pump faied, so you need to replace the oil pump and the converter, that bushing is centering the neck of the torque converter when enter the oil pump, is lying behind the seal that failed. Good luck
Bonjour quantite remplissage d huile svp ? merci.
You can also use Valvoline Max Life for a Quarter of the $$$$
Yes and no.. I have used liqui Molly top tec 1200 which meets zf/vw requirements and transmission started shifting rough from 2nd to 3rd. I'm going to do 2nd drain and fill and use pentosin atf5. Hopefully that will sort put my issue.
My Audi A4 is done 220K Km, can i change the ATF,
+Bee ShopCS We always recommend a fluid drain and fill with a new pan/filter and the correct ZF Lifeguard Fluid. It should be done every 60k miles or 8 years.
Thank you very much its 10 years already
220k I am not sure if has been change before
I ask the service Advice in Audi, Said i am not advice you to change , i do not know what to do so i ask you thank you very much for ur answer i really appreciated
Where to buy pump?
Lol. Check filler bolt FIRST. If you can’t get that off, you are screwed if you drain first
filler plug 30 ??? or 35 Nm ???
Thank you for your question! According to our technical services team almost all of the 5HP fill instructions list tightening torque at 35Nm +/- 3Nm except some Audi/VW which are listed at 80Nm. If you have any further questions, please contact our technical services hotline at +1 800-321-0784.
I did this service now my transmission is acting weird…i did everything right…..wtfffff
Too many bolts on that pan. This is the hardest part of the whole ordeal
+tobysoter Right. This one has 23 or 26 fine threads. Where as my truck has less and course threads. Theres a lot of screwing to do
You have never worked on a older Ford Taurus, at least the vehicle has a permanent gasket.
Audi “lifetime” is the first owner warranty apparently!
Why the fu$k did you get rid of the dipstick??!
Tks a lot!
