One moment he was about to inherit his father's place but all of a sudden yorichii replaces him. All this, still he had the flute he gave. Simply the best written/most complex character of KnY. Some people think that out of love for his brother, Yoriichi didn't kill him in their last fight, and that's true, but Yoriichi only made the situation worse by not giving Kokushibo the honorable death he wanted from being killed at the hands of number 1, and living for the next 450 years in cruel pain and suffering. This may be an unpopular opinion, but Michikatsu was definitely a better brother than Yoriichi :(
