Jag hade inga förkunskaper, ingen spanska för invandrare och ingen spansk flickvän. Med ett öppet sinne, många barnprogram på spanska och spanska vänner lärde jag mig både språk och kultur. Det jag fortfarande har svårt med på andra språk är skämt och ironi. Alla skrattar utom jag😄 Ha ett lyckosamt 2022 både du och flickvännen!
I find much of what you say as very true. Snow. Yes. In the dark times of the year, it can brighten up your life. It also has several different smells. Some folks can even smell a snow storm several hours before it happens. And wintertime - get inside too. Bring out the blankets, make some hot tea, get cozy. After some time in the snow outside, that is a true treat. For being proud of ones country, it does not have to be aggressive. I am a Swede, living abroad. I have introduced some Swedish food to my friends, and found great acceptance for that. As a male, I also do my own washing and cleaning, which really shocks some folks where I live now. That is cool and a good thing for equality. Last but not least: learning a language and getting comfortable with it. I am doing the same, but with another language than Swedish. For me, there are so many "everyday victories" in this. Everyone wants to talk about language. I can strike up a conversation with anyone about language. Politics, racism, corona-stands and whatever - it is all gone. I just ask for the specific meaning of a word or a phrase, and everyone is on it. A lovely feeling.

And you’re completely right about introducing some of your native delicacies and habits in a new country or environment. It helps us all become more accepting and understanding of each other, right? @@JustaBritAbroad Oh, I almost forgot. It is rare, but some years the lakes "freezes blank". Without interference with snow or wind. The lakes freeze totally even, and the ice is without flaws and completely clear. That is when you go for your skates. In the night, the ice is "shining black". The sky is clear, the stars have never looked so bright. The moon give you the light you need and the snow on the shores sparkles. Yes, it can be dangerous, please check the ice thickness/state and the temperature. BUT. If you hit the right conditions, it is pure magic. It is a once in a lifetime experience.
And for ice on the lakes, it is generally safer when the conditions are "freezing". That means until january/february. As soon as you get "thaw", you should be extra careful.
I love how warm and positive this video is, it's so nice to see the joy that living in Sweden brings you. I'm excited! Even though down here in Australia I probably can't participate, but I love this window into a country that I've wanted to visit for ages, I would have been there in 2020 except for a certain pandemic. God fortsättning!

I was born and raised in the north about ten or so hours away from Canada, the winters were minus 20 with a ton of snow and ice, I grew up loving it. Per was born and raised in Sweden and grew up hating the snow, is, and cold temps. The one thing weather wise we can agree on is that rainy days are fun because you can stay in and play with your toys hahahaha. It's awesome that you're feeling more comfortable with your Swedish, I'm happy for you.

All Swedes, Norwegians and Danes are getting by in English. You can manage in Scandinavia for years without learning the languages, but you've obviously been determined and must have a natural ear for languages as well. Well done.👍 I know a little bit about it, because my best mate is actually a Londoner.. He has been living hear for about 25 years and speaks Danish perfectly without any accent, besides our local one, of course,😉. Som en person som bor i norra Sverige så kan jag bara instämma i att snö verkligen gör världen ljusare. Speciellt vi som bara har 4-5 timmar dagsljus/solljus under vintern. Snön gör det lättare och det är verkligen en skillnad med och utan snö. Där jag bor har vi haft snö hela december, och det har gjort det lättare att klara av den mörka tiden.

Fun part about shutting down in snow. Parts of sweden's infrastructure is only spec'ed to operate down to about -35c, below that and we start to lose train services (first thing to shut down - but to be fair, automotive tech (made by competent makers) is only spec'ed down to -40c). If anyone from a non-arctic country isn't freezing yet; just consider that we actually shut down the trains in some parts (for a few hours) due to cold every now and then (in our northern parts). (Actually reached the news this year). (In case anyone wonders about that -40c for automotive, that is when some types of gasoline starts to gel, winterized diesel gels at about that point as well (non-winterized starts to gel a lot warmer (iirc between -12c and 0c depending on tolerance of application and type of diesel)) Welcome to the arctics - where oils temperature ranges is an issue at both ends. :)
Thank you for all of the brilliant content you have provided offering us an insight into expat Swedish living. I continue to use you and few others as my guide to should I move to Sweden, a growing desire for the past 5 years. This year I hope to make a few trips to scope out different areas to live and the possibility of getting work bearing in mind my Swedish skills currently are that of an 18month old. Whatever I decide I have loved your videos and appreciate the time and effort you have put into them. Wishing you continued success and happiness in 2022.
One funny thing for me who lives in the north of the country is just how different the reaction is to snow in the south compared to where I live. Those in the south seem to panic over just a little bit while up here we can get loads and are hardly bothered.
Very impressiv that you have come to the point that you feel comfortable speeking swedish. Meny of my british and us collegues have a hard time learnig since almost all swedish colleagues sees a opportunity to train their spoken english with them. So I see your aproach by switching job to be able to practice the langue.
In part of Canada we get a fair bit of snow. I used to dislike it a bit because my mom would make me wear ski pants when I was younger. I would walk two steps and fall over. Or for the past few years, it would snow so much during exam week that the sidewalk was blocked and I would have to call a cab to get me to school so I could write my exams on top. Figures the the two Fall semesters I don’t go and the sidewalks are clear. I would miss not having snow. It’s that cold wind chill I hate!

Regarding traditions: I think any country (or more specifically culture) that does not have traditions is doomed to disappear from the world. It is traditions that, to some extent, define a culture and give the people alive today a feeling of having roots and belonging to something. Without traditions, what would stop those very same people from doing things in completely different ways?

I like how Nordic people make the most of winter, since you can't do anything about it. It snows frequently where I am too, but all people do is complain about it.

I was thinking when you said the british don´t like snow, can that be because it´s usually a bit warmer there so when it snows it comes mostly as wet snow, you know "blötsnö"? Cause if that´s the case i understand if they don´t like it, it´s heavy to shovel and slippery to walk or drive in. Cold, more "dry" snow on the other hand is much less of a problem.
I was a bit surprised about what you said about Brits and patriotism. I’m from a Commonwealth country and was in the UK for HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and saw a lot of well deserved pride. Of course, that was a particularly special event. Another video idea may be how do Swedes view their monarchy vs how the Brits view theirs.

Det finns inget dåligt väder bara dåliga kläder, right huh! That's what I grew up with and I still here that phrase! I kinda beg to differ. Certain weather does not want me to go outside. Your pronouncement in the Swedish language sounds great as far as I've heard. You're doing a great job! Learning a new lingo isn't easy. Well, my parents are very much into traditions whilst I'm not. However, we did have a proper Christmas for once this year. I think anyone should be proud of the country they come from or live in or both, yet in a humble way. Very nice video! Happy new year! 🥂🌻🥂🌻

So UKs view on snow is the same as stockholm got it. Only north of sweden is vikings (actually people here complain too) but atleast our traffic dont stop everytime it snows it has to be very bad for our traffic to stop.

I perioder tom mycket mer än Svenska. :-)
Misstag är en stor del av lärandet. Jag har lärt mig engelska sen jag började skolan, och trots det kan jag göra misstag när jag vill bli förstådd på engelska.
Du är helt rätt med det Freja! Håller du med då att man måste komma förbi gränsen när man känner sig störde av att göra misstag då? För att jag minns innan det var det svårt att vara modig med språk. Men som du säger går det bättre när man förstår att man måste göra misstag för att lära sig mer!
@@JustaBritAbroad Well, actually, I got in touch with a Swedish friend which I did not talk to for a few years so, that’s what helped motivate me into learning Swedish again. The videos helped as well kind of get into the holiday spirit and learn about someone else’s culture because I lost my grandfather in October so it was hard this year so the videos helped.
Only way to learn the language is to use it, got co workers that lived here for like 30 years and still they do not understand swedish very well. At home they only talk their native language and watch tv shows in the same.
Glad you like the country even in it's worse state after the two landtraitors are done ruin more or less everything that WAS Sweden and Swedes. But to be honest we can't learn out seasons because we didn't invent them ; ) However, keep it up! - That's what she said (8 O
I don't dislike my country, but after 22 years of being a Swede, living in Sweden, i just need something new in life. I've seen everything my native Sweden can give me. I'm looking at maybe move to USA and at least travel to the UK and Germany, and later to Ukraine. Like i said, i love my country, i just need a new start in life
I think, most people it’s not that they don’t love their country they just get used to the customs and the culture. For example, my Swedish friend was happy to leave Sweden for work in the USA and live with family for a few years but after things got chaotic he was somewhat happy to be back in Sweden. I live in Canada in one of the most beautiful countries in the world and there is a lot of it I haven’t seen. I love the mix of cultures, freedom to be who I want to be, our collective values, and Canadian identity. I would never permanently leave but I get tired of the bureaucracy at times and USA politics influencing ours but I love my country. For some people the grass is greener on the other side by leaving their home country and sometimes they realize after they leave the grass they grass they were standing on was already green but they just noticed.
@a3214 Unfortunately, I read that the two things people do not like about Sweden is the right wing political system and catering too much to immigrants. I heard though that Denmark, Sweden, and Norway are slowly closing the doors. I know, some people would say, “oh that’s just being racist!” But they are missing the point. When catering too much to these minority cultures the dominant culture gets phased out along with a feeling of lost identity. Furthermore, if I go to a country in the Middle East or Asia, they are not going to change their culture for me. I have to adapt to theirs.

thougt u had no shirt, and was just a tanned britt..... then i saw u had a shirt. have a nice new year and so on... can you please expand and tell the world, that winternights with snow os almost more more bright that midumeers nigt? the winter is only dark and depressing i you have nos snow... like gothenburg, skåne the whole UK and so on.. snow is light! you can walk in forrest in the middle of the night and se more than without the snow... i understand the darkness and depressions about the dark... but that is a choice...
Its this, you learned probably more about your self, by leaving your former comfort zone? Its kind of leaving your parents home and one have to take responsibility of one self, by interact with other people? And there are a lot of benefits of learning about other cultures, even if they have the smelliest food ever. The history about it kind of make you try it another time? Thats not that important, becuse moste swedes dont try it at the first time. But you need to learn how to eat a "Julbord" the propper way, like your colleges did last Christmas! And then to weather, "there is no such things as bad weather, only bad clothings"! It means, moste adults want to go to Spain in winter, but children want to go out and play in the snow.

Fun part about shutting down in snow. Parts of sweden's infrastructure is only spec'ed to operate down to about -35c, below that and we start to lose train services (first thing to shut down - but to be fair, automotive tech (made by competent makers) is only spec'ed down to -40c).
If anyone from a non-arctic country isn't freezing yet; just consider that we actually shut down the trains in some parts (for a few hours) due to cold every now and then (in our northern parts). (Actually reached the news this year).
(In case anyone wonders about that -40c for automotive, that is when some types of gasoline starts to gel, winterized diesel gels at about that point as well (non-winterized starts to gel a lot warmer (iirc between -12c and 0c depending on tolerance of application and type of diesel))

One funny thing for me who lives in the north of the country is just how different the reaction is to snow in the south compared to where I live. Those in the south seem to panic over just a little bit while up here we can get loads and are hardly bothered.

Very impressiv that you have come to the point that you feel comfortable speeking swedish. Meny of my british and us collegues have a hard time learnig since almost all swedish colleagues sees a opportunity to train their spoken english with them. So I see your aproach by switching job to be able to practice the langue.
In part of Canada we get a fair bit of snow. I used to dislike it a bit because my mom would make me wear ski pants when I was younger. I would walk two steps and fall over. Or for the past few years, it would snow so much during exam week that the sidewalk was blocked and I would have to call a cab to get me to school so I could write my exams on top. Figures the the two Fall semesters I don’t go and the sidewalks are clear. I would miss not having snow. It’s that cold wind chill I hate!

Regarding traditions:
I think any country (or more specifically culture) that does not have traditions is doomed to disappear from the world. It is traditions that, to some extent, define a culture and give the people alive today a feeling of having roots and belonging to something. Without traditions, what would stop those very same people from doing things in completely different ways?

I was thinking when you said the british don´t like snow, can that be because it´s usually a bit warmer there so when it snows it comes mostly as wet snow, you know "blötsnö"? Cause if that´s the case i understand if they don´t like it, it´s heavy to shovel and slippery to walk or drive in. Cold, more "dry" snow on the other hand is much less of a problem.

I was a bit surprised about what you said about Brits and patriotism. I’m from a Commonwealth country and was in the UK for HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and saw a lot of well deserved pride. Of course, that was a particularly special event.
Another video idea may be how do Swedes view their monarchy vs how the Brits view theirs.
I like to point out that it is 30 +/ e0- celsius not farenheit so that be other messurements in farenheit. If someone else was wondering.
good point, since my audience is mainly European, I only ever talk in celsius, but its a good idea to pont that out for people that don't know!

Well, my parents are very much into traditions whilst I'm not. However, we did have a proper Christmas for once this year.

So UKs view on snow is the same as stockholm got it. Only north of sweden is vikings (actually people here complain too) but atleast our traffic dont stop everytime it snows it has to be very bad for our traffic to stop.

Misstag är en stor del av lärandet. Jag har lärt mig engelska sen jag började skolan, och trots det kan jag göra misstag när jag vill bli förstådd på engelska.
Du är helt rätt med det Freja! Håller du med då att man måste komma förbi gränsen när man känner sig störde av att göra misstag då? För att jag minns innan det var det svårt att vara modig med språk. Men som du säger går det bättre när man förstår att man måste göra misstag för att lära sig mer!

@@JustaBritAbroad Well, actually, I got in touch with a Swedish friend which I did not talk to for a few years so, that’s what helped motivate me into learning Swedish again. The videos helped as well kind of get into the holiday spirit and learn about someone else’s culture because I lost my grandfather in October so it was hard this year so the videos helped.
There is no bad weather, just bad clothes. 😁

Only way to learn the language is to use it, got co workers that lived here for like 30 years and still they do not understand swedish very well. At home they only talk their native language and watch tv shows in the same.

I don't dislike my country, but after 22 years of being a Swede, living in Sweden, i just need something new in life. I've seen everything my native Sweden can give me. I'm looking at maybe move to USA and at least travel to the UK and Germany, and later to Ukraine. Like i said, i love my country, i just need a new start in life
I think, most people it’s not that they don’t love their country they just get used to the customs and the culture. For example, my Swedish friend was happy to leave Sweden for work in the USA and live with family for a few years but after things got chaotic he was somewhat happy to be back in Sweden.
I live in Canada in one of the most beautiful countries in the world and there is a lot of it I haven’t seen. I love the mix of cultures, freedom to be who I want to be, our collective values, and Canadian identity. I would never permanently leave but I get tired of the bureaucracy at times and USA politics influencing ours but I love my country.
For some people the grass is greener on the other side by leaving their home country and sometimes they realize after they leave the grass they grass they were standing on was already green but they just noticed.

@a3214 Unfortunately, I read that the two things people do not like about Sweden is the right wing political system and catering too much to immigrants. I heard though that Denmark, Sweden, and Norway are slowly closing the doors. I know, some people would say, “oh that’s just being racist!” But they are missing the point. When catering too much to these minority cultures the dominant culture gets phased out along with a feeling of lost identity. Furthermore, if I go to a country in the Middle East or Asia, they are not going to change their culture for me. I have to adapt to theirs.

Its kind of leaving your parents home and one have to take responsibility of one self, by interact with other people?
And there are a lot of benefits of learning about other cultures, even if they have the smelliest food ever. The history about it kind of make you try it another time? Thats not that important, becuse moste swedes dont try it at the first time.
But you need to learn how to eat a "Julbord" the propper way, like your colleges did last Christmas!
And then to weather, "there is no such things as bad weather, only bad clothings"! It means, moste adults want to go to Spain in winter, but children want to go out and play in the snow.
