The DC-8 didn't have a 35 degree sweep which limited it's performance and efficiency. It had a 30 degree sweep and the airfoil design turned out to have much higher drag than was calculated. There was considerable money spent on modifying the wing leading edges and flaps to overcome the design problem that was baked into the first 130-140 aircraft. This lost the sales war to the 707

Bravo DC-8. And another well made, well delivered information on the subject. With regards to unpaved landing surfaces, a friend flew on a DC-8 Kombi type variant, 50-70 odd seats, and said it was uncanny seeing the cargo/site equipment behind over the centre section. At the time, It flew from the north western Yukon, Canada, and flew first-time site workers into Kazakhstan, where he worked on the construction of an oil /plant refinary. I stand to be corrected and someone with more knowledge on the DC-8, but the JT-8 turbojet engines for landing on unpaved unprepared strips, the engines featured a jet nozzle protruding from the front lip on the jet intake. This jet nozzle blasted high-speed bleed air downwards towards the ground and slightly ahead of the intake in order to disrupt the low pressure vortex that usually forms when taxing or stationary. Often noticeable on a rainy wet day, a mini vortex can be observed, suction from the ground into the intake. It's terrible for turbine blades if on unprepared dirt strips.

Thank you. And thank you for the wonderful story. I came across that variant in my research, it look truly stunning and kind of scary lol. But!!! It would have been incredible to be so awesome to witness the Dc-8 takeoff in person especially with the jet nozzles. 🫡🥹

Boeing B737-100s are 'gravel kitted' (as you describe) for operation on unpaved airstrips (gravel, snow/ice on gravel and occassionally on sea ice) in Arctic Canada [Nunavut, Northwest Territories and northern Quebec (Nunavik)].
Their low bypass turbofan engines have a narrow diameter, which increases the distance to the runway and thus the risk of FOD ingestion. A ski like gravel deflector is also mounted immediately aft of the nose wheel.
I wasn't aware that DC8-100s could also be fitted with effective 'gravel kits'.

The very first airplane I flew on was a National Airlines DC-8 nonstop from Orlando FL to LAX back in 1968. The pilot gave my father, a McDonnell Douglas engineer, a tour of the cockpit. Full meals where a big part of the service. I was only like 7 so the seats seemed large but I'm sure they were still far roomier than today's. It was a great experience.

I enjoyed this video, but we're seeing clips of 707's, 727's, and Convair 880's all mixed in. And when you bring up the Super-70 series we're shown earlier DC-8 models.

Great video! Glad I found your channel. I was hired as a pilot by Delta back in '88. We were still flying the DC-8. I never flew it, didn't even jump-seat on it but I dead-headed 1 leg DFW-ATL. Even back then I knew it was a historic event for me. The pilots loved it, even though it lacked an APU and the spoilers couldn't be used inflight. One note- the DC-8 had a dual wheel nose-gear but two 4 wheel bogies for the main landing gear (not 2 wheel). Cheers

Another winner! DC-8 was a great program, and the DC-9 that derived from it even more successful. The Super 74's with the CFM's looked great as freighters. Seems like just yesterday they retired them.

I believe that the DC8 was the best commercial airliner to fly. A very safe aircraft with four turbo jet engines, two engines on each wing. Think of it, in case one engine were to shut down in mid-air, one engine on the opposite wing could be turned off and the plane would still fly with only two engines. I guess the only fault for this great plane, was that it was very loud. I remember hearing it when it would fly over the neighborhood and it sounded like a bomb in the sky lol I mean it roared! Y'all take it easy

I worked on many of these for UPS. They had many fuel leaks, but considering the use at Delta and up engine mods then later cargo these were tough.

I worked as a aircraft mechanic for many years, this aircraft was built like a tank! The only problem for ground crews was the lack of a apu ,I loved flying on this aircraft.

Your experience with the Douglas DC-8 showcases the robustness of its design, affectionately likened to ‘a tank.’ The absence of an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) did pose challenges, but it’s heartening to hear the fondness you hold for working on such a historic aircraft. Mechanics like you are the unsung heroes of aviation, ensuring these ‘birds’ can fly safely.

The DC-8 was always playing catch-up with the 707, which was the real pioneer. I flew many times on the 707 and a few times also on the DC-8, and the former seemed like a better plane. As a passenger, I liked the higher number of windows on the 707 versus the larger span of blank wall between the windows on the DC-8. Over all, the 707 was always the bride and the DC-8 was the bridesmaid. The DC-9 and its derivatives were much more successful and significant.

The problem was Donald Douglas's late introduction of the DC8. Douglas kept filling orders for prop planes. Douglas did not retain enough earnings and when it was apparent they did not have enough money, they had to try to get loans. This turned out to be difficult because conservative bankers did not believe a 2nd jet would be profitable. This led to bad loan terms and take over of control by financiers. Douglas never recovered from this double wamy of bad management and difficulty funding new projects. It seemed in those years that Douglas was playing catch up with Boeing. Then McDonnel bought Douglas but the bad Douglas management prevailed. My McDonnel stock went from a great performer to a poor performer as the combined companies. Ironically Boeing bought McDonnel Douglas and somehow bad management infected Boeing, resulting in the 737max problems.

The 707 was faster and better than the diesel 8, with more sweep to the wing.

It's a shame the DC8 didn't end up being the "chosen one" compared to the Boeing 707?
Way back in the day, I rode many of the DC8 and 707 and hands down I preferred the DC8 by far in comparison to the 707! It was faster, a little more comfortable, and in my opinion quieter than the 707! I remember thinking back then that the DC8 would crush the 707 in sales but wow was I wrong! Too bad bcos back them Douglas aircraft had it going on! 😊 I always compared flying on a DC8 as a Cadillac vs the 707 Cevy Impala! Vast difference in comfort and capabilities 😊
