- Organised by Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall, “Fashion chronicler and sartorial provocateur: Eileen Chang’s use of cheongsam as her expressive and creative medium” is part of a series of public talks by industry experts, held in conjunction with our “Modern Women of the Republic: Fashion and Change in China and Singapore” special exhibition.
In this video, panellists Lim Fong Wei, Lianhe Zaobao senior correspondent, and former newscaster Wang Yanqing, along with moderator, Curator Tan Yan Ni, will be exploring Eileen Chang’s work《更衣记》Geng yi ji (Chinese Life and Fashions) and examine her views on how the cheongsam serves as a highly expressive and customisable medium that allows Chinese women to define and convey their individuality.
About “Modern Women of the Republic: Fashion and Change in China and Singapore” Special Exhibition:
“Modern Women of the Republic: Fashion and Change in China and Singapore” special exhibition showcases over 90 artefacts and archival photographs from China and Singapore from the late 1800s to 1970s, a period when women’s roles and lifestyles saw the most drastic changes. The exhibition attempts to interpret the concept of "the Modern Woman" against the backdrop of historical milestones of each period.
