  • In this video, I'll be introducing some of the tires that I use on my road bike and commuting bike. I strongly recommend them since I have yet to get a single puncture on either of them with over thousands of kilometers ridden on both sets.
    The main tires I'll be looking at in this video are the
    #1 Schwalbe Marathon
    Great Commuting/Touring Tire
    US - amzn.to/359zwmh
    Japan - amzn.to/2MPRqo8
    #2 Continental Gatorskins
    Great Smooth Rolling Road Bike Tire / I've used this in races and it performs great
    US - amzn.to/2P7QpW2
    Japan - amzn.to/2MQLQBT
    Buy 2 pack and save $$$
    US - amzn.to/2BOtOMp
    Japan - amzn.to/2oa3KBt
    #3 Schwalbe Durano
    Appears to be a good balance of protection, low rolling resistance, and a cheaper price point. Still haven't test ridden this yet, but will be testing it out from now on.
    US - amzn.to/2BU7JvA
    Japan - amzn.to/2wqxOg3
    Buy 2 pack and save $$$
    Japan - amzn.to/2PEcaNV
    I'm sure there are a lot of other great tires out there.. This is just a list of the ones that I've used and have found to be reliable and puncture resistant. If you have any other suggestions, please leave them in the comments!

    Hey everyone, just so you know we started our Taiwan trip and have been busy getting our first few rides in. I was hoping to get some video editing done quickly, but we're going to be sending our luggage ahead to the next city while we ride in between, which means no laptop for a few days. So it will be about a week until the next video, but there's lots of good stuff coming!
    The same goes with responding to comments, I may be a bit slower than usual..

      @@TwoWheelCruise Schwalbe is pronounced as if you are saying the word school. Consider the "Shc" sounding like "Sc" without the "h". Like "sc" in the word "scoop"
      "Sch" - ool
      "Sch" - wal - be
      Some might say it's Shhhh Wal Bee, but dramatically incorrect. However here in the US that's how people says it, in the the UK however Sc - wal - be

    Yup, the Schwalbe Marathon 700x25 are great . About 1500 km on mine so far. No flats to date. Not much wear either. Worth the money.

  • @Jman-eg9zp

    I use Schwalbe Marathon 700x35 on a trek hybrid, excellent tire, even though they are heavy they have very low rolling resistance. So yes they can feel a bit sluggish when accelerating but once you get going they fly. Ridden about 1k miles on them, absolutely no flats.

    • @kottelkannim4919
      @kottelkannim4919 3 года назад +1

      I use 700x35c Schwalbe Marathon Racer on a Trek FX mostly on paved roads. Easier to accelerate, yet acceptable tire protection for the aforementioned conditions. Although far less protection than other Marathon tires, no flats either for more than 1k km.

    Schwalbe Marathon Plus are even more durable, heavy duty and reflective. Perfect commuter tire! Maybe a bit overkill for some people but it's nice to not worry about a flat especially in the winter.

      Marathon Plus > Gatorskin. tested both for many miles in Phoenix where Goat's head thorns guarantee a puncture about every 50 miles with stock tires. Gatorskin unfortunately failed to provide complete protection so i eventually swapped it out for a Tannus. The Marathon Plus has gone about 2500 miles no flats. Gatorskin got 3 flats in just under 1000 miles. The Gatorskin is much lighter and faster though. So, if you do not ride over caltrops like we do in the southwest it may be viable.

    The reflective strip isn't just "a bit" reflective. Take a picture with your phones flash and that is already enough to make them glow like mad. Like any reflex you only see it when you look at them from the same direction as a light shining at them. Like the flash or car headlights. I never ride during the darker months of the year without reflective strip tires, the best visibility upgrade by far for a bike, makes it super obvious to motorists what you are in pitch black. Just keep the strip somewhat clean.

      Bright bicycle lights are your best bet!

    • @MentalEdge
      @MentalEdge 6 месяцев назад

      @@ev-ezaye3580 For visibility a red and a white light that are dim enough not to blind you even when looked at directly, is best.
      Even really powerful lights are dimmer than reflectors, when you place the reflector in the headlights of a motor vehicle and look at it from the driver's seat.
      You only need serious brightness if you intend to actually see by your front light, and even then, front and rear lights help with spotting you from behind, or the front, but not as much the side.
      In a well lit city, using something dim so you're not blinding pedestrians is far safer. And the reflectors obviously don't glow on their own. The front and rear lights simply serve to indicate what direction you're facing to anyone observing.
      Rim reflectors are WAY MORE VISIBLE from the side, than some light. Seriously, in the headlights of a car the two glowing circles are not just bright, but LARGE. Compare that to the two dots you get with a pair of lights seen from the side.

    The Marathons are about twice the weight of the Gators whereas the Duranos are somewhere in between and closer to what I'd consider a road bike tyre. The folding Gators are great but can be a little slippery in the wet and are slower than Continental Four Season and GP5000 alternatives both of which have very good wear and puncture resistance (not quite as good as the Gators, but for the increased performance PDG). Continentals seem to go through fairly significant discounting cycles so stocking up when they are cheap is worthwhile and choosing between the three alternatives is a balance between their prices at any given time and where your needs fit on the wear and puncture v Grip and rolling resistance continuum. Others worth looking at are Continental's Chinese made Gransport Extra (as opposed to Gransport Race which has less puncture protection), Michelin ProRace 4 Endurance (these were superseded by something less worthy and are getting harder to source), the Pirelli Four Seasons variant (possibly the most expensive of these) or maybe the Schwable One V-Guards which I've had a reasonable run with but I've also seen mixed reviews of.

    I've the Marathon Schwalbe as well. Solid recommendation. No punctures after three years of daily commutes (13000+ km) despite having to drive through lots of smashed glass (thanks drunken people). In fact, I worn out my inner tubes faster. The downside is that cycling with them is slightly heavier compared to the Continentals. The reflective material on the sidewall are actually a legal requirement where I live (Netherlands). The Continental has less sidewall protection so be careful with going over sharp bumps and hopping on/off curbs. Otherwise just as good and lighter to cycle.

    • @TwoWheelCruise
      @TwoWheelCruise  6 лет назад +3

      I don't miss smashed glass on the road.. thankfully none of that in Japan.. even after an accident, everything is cleaned up
      Interesting that the reflective material is a legal requirement. A good standard to impose though I guess

    • @event4216
      @event4216 4 года назад +2

      Reflectors front and rear, and also ones visible from sides are mandatory. Instead of plastic reflectors in spokes which change spoke tension reflectors on tyres seem like viable option. Law requires reflectors without specifying they should be in spokes. Motorists not paying attention will not see cyclists even if they appear like glowing comets.

    I had Conti GP4000s (out of production now) on my Cannondale CAAD5, they were excellent and have now changed to (foldable) Schwalbe Lugano for sheer curiosity, but they are not even on the same planet. The ride is smooth and stable but they seem to wear quickly.
    On my commuter I have the very affordable Schwalbe Spicer tyres. Very smooth and fast and seemingly relatively safe I had my first puncture yesterday after almost 2.600 kms. Their downside is the fact that they are difficult to remount correctly after they have been removed. I tried to fit them 4 or 5 times and ended up mounting it against its rotation, which finally worked out well...

      Loves me some Conti Gatorskins (700x32), BUT am about to try some 45mm Schwalbe (it's pronounced "sh-VAHL-buh" in German; it means "swallow" like the bird) Marathon Plus because of their ridiculous puncture resistance, lower pressure (no more DING and THUD every time I roll over a small pebble), and reflective sidewall (less death at night).

      Hahaha, sorry for putting you in this situation (unwillingly, though😅) for having to make a video about MTB tyres. But you don't HAVE to😉.
      I'm using Continental Race/X (now Cross)/Mountain-King tyres, all in the RaceSport variants, now for about 10 years and have no intentions of swapping to other brands (for now). I use identical tyres in front and rear and recently use different models in front and rear to have better grip in the front and a lower rolling resistance in the rear. On very dry and packed surfaces and long distance road usage I use Race-King (f/r) and also use X-King (f) for better grip and Race-King (r) for better rolling resistance. When it rains or gets a bit muddy, I use Mountain-King (f) and X-King (r).
      Due to the fact of changing tyres often, I don't use tubeless, but latex inner tubes. It's a bit heavier than tubeless (about 50-60 grams per wheel) but has a similarly low rolling resistance as tubeless.
      The Race-Kings have a similar rolling resistance with latex (about 16 watts) as some road tyres.

    TWC I agree the contis are great. I did have a flat with them but that was because the road conditions were really bad. Lot of bottles thrown out of moving cars. The bottle shatters; perfect for punctures. That’s life.

    • @TwoWheelCruise
      @TwoWheelCruise  6 лет назад

      Nothing you can do about that.. sorry to hear that, that sucks.. 😑

  • @PeterYannick
    @PeterYannick 6 лет назад +2

    I hardly ever had a puncture but it changed when I moved to Glasgow. Scotts like to party and there is always a broken bottle on the side of the road. I bought kevlar Vittoria racing folding tires and on the first ride I found a cut on top of the tyre about half centimetre long but the tyre did't loose the pressure and I rode it for almost two years.
    I was going to buy Continental this year because they have such a good press. James Hayden won the Transcontinental on them this year.
    Yet when I went to the store they had only Vittoria in the size I was looking for, so its Italia once again :)

  • @christianscott6963
    @christianscott6963 3 года назад +1

    I gotta add... Continentals are strong... Wait for a deal..
    But they are worth it.
    Did a loaded 400 mile tour ok on 35mm cyclocross Continentals. Back tire wore towards end of trip... But only required a rotation to front for probably another 300miles plus.
    750 miles from a cx 35 mm loaded. And I'm not a light dude (220lbs)
    Continental is a name brand, but you def get what you pay for!
    Great brand!!

    My commuter bike tyres has so many cuts on them and its time for a replacement after 18 months of use, I decided listen to your recommendation and got myself a pair of Gator Skin. Feels better power transfer than the previous Grand Prix 4000 and may be a little on the slippery side in wet weather, not a problem as long as I am aware of it. I use Panaracer on my MTB for foul weather commute, works well but less puncture resistance.

      I wiped out in the rain with Gator Skin making a fast right and then trying to avoid a pedestrian/bum walking across the cross walk. The tire lost traction on the painted surface of the crosswalk. I had to hang around and evaluate the damage to my body for a good 30 minutes before continuing on my journey that rainy day. My butt bone was sore for 2 weeks afterwards. However, they are good tires and would surely buy them again.

    Hi. Nice content mate. First..it`s not Swabel but Schwal-be. It`s so nice when you pronounce it well. (No for me but for yourself when you give your video`s open space to the world. LOL. I use Schwalbe Marathon Plus myself on my wheelchair. No puntures in about 6 years now. I am very pleased with it. I had to chance my tires about one year ago and used a new tire the Schwalbe one. These tires look like slicks but they are very sticky to the road, even when I use 7 or 8 BAR in my wheelchair wheels. In the beginning i had some residu from the tires on my hand, wich i had not when i used the Marathon plus at 7 or 8 BAR. You did a good job on your videa and will subscribe on your channel. I have come back to this vlog. I think I have something interesting for you. I run Gatorskin 28 and 32 on my road bikes. Running a 28 or larger I have reduced my the pressure to 50psi. This has 2 benefits, comfort and puncture resistance. I have essentially turned my road bike into a cycle cross with 28's. (The only downside is I have to insert the wheel/tyre into the fork deflated due to the rim brakes). Like you the puncture history is excellent. The rolling resistance (speed) is - I think - better than other 25 or 23 tyres. So good, on my Giant (disc) I now run 32's with no regrets.
    Go wide and reduce the pressure!
    Good riding!

    I was thinking about using the gatorskin hardshell($42) in 32c, but there are a few reviews talking about how they blow out at the side wall along the bead. It was recommend(from the bike shop, Specialized dealer...) to get the specialized armadillo($45)(60tpi) or elite($55)(120tpi) version. The elite are about $10 more per tire, and you have to order from a dealer or directly from specialized. So far I've had good experiences with Continental: one of my previous bikes came fitted with the UltraSport 2 and I did 10,000km on those tyres with only 1 flat (which was my fault for running too low and pinch-flatting).
    Currently have GP5000s on one bike and so far have done 3500km with no flats (I only ride those on tarmac).
    For a bulletproof city/road/mixed surface tyre, the Michelin Protek Max has proved to be amazing BUT they are extremely heavy. However, 8000km and no punctures, the rear tyre is now starting to show some wear though; I'm having a hard time deciding what to use next as I'd like to save some weight.
    Also, I've just ordered a Schwalbe Marathon Plus to put on the rear of my city/hack bike as it's one of the few tyres available in the size this bike runs - 37-590 or 650A. Apparently this size is fairly common in Japan though?

But they’re so nice on road and off-road as well. I’ll probably get marathons for my old commuter bike soon. I've had seriously bad luck with Continental. The Travel Contact, Speedride, and even GP Four-Season all had sidewall rips, some worse than others. I positively loved the Four-Season for a measly 1,000mi.... I've heard great things about the Gatorskins, though.
    I just bought a set of Michelin Pro 4 Endurance v2. Same weight as the Gatorskins, nearly the same puncture resistance in various tests, as 5 watts less rolling resistance, apparently (according to bicyclerollingresistance.com). Shhhh Wall Bee :)
    The gatorskin size might bigger/wider/chubbier than any other brand for the same size number, just make sure it fits your frame/fork.
    For schwalbe tires never ever clean sidewall using brush, the sidewall so thin to the point you can rub the rubber and see the thread.
    My recommendation would be maxxis re-fuse for outdoor, and shwalbe kojak for rollers it's the super ultra slickest tire hopefully it doesn't make too much noise for japan standard decibel.
    My fave tire still Kenda smallblock, Kenda usually have lower pressure requirement for same size compare to different brands also the compound made last to the point even the compound is dead due to the aging but you still have fairly good thread.
    You might also check Tannus tires for puncture free.

This is because it’s not all abt the tyre tht causes puncture but the tube too due to spoke pinch punctures.

    The Vittoria Randonneur and Vittoria Urbano are excellent city-hybrid bike tyres! that are better value for money and Italian engineered.

    I had Shwable Marathon plus tyres on my commuter which lasted 2 years. BUT on replacing them I had a string of around 10 punctures in 3 seperate Shwarble marathon plus tyres!!! My thinking is cheap subcontractors.... Hence the reason for watching this, I want to try something different.
