  • We were camping in our cousin's driveway surrounded by tall trees when a thunderstorm turned especially ugly. We feel lucky to be here to relate the story, since we weren't sure what was going to happen when the winds went berserk. In this video, we relate the details of a pretty terrifying experience and what happened to our RV. ‪@outdoorsrvmfg‬ ‪@mytsolar‬

This same thing happened to us when we were in a T/ trails On the Oregon Coast in our diesel pusher RV, when we woke up all the trees around us was fallen on top of other RVs but somehow our Rv was unharmed, but we was boxed in and couldn’t leave until crews came out to remove the trees. Until this week every single RV that I know the owners have had at least one little nick or scratch. That includes me and, like most owners, I found the first visible damage is disheartening. Especially since it usually involves maneuvering slowly near trees and bushes.
I always figured that the RVgeeks would have a gas station other-driver incident or a 'desert sandblasting' incident, but NOT a tree scratch as their first visible damage incident.
I'm glad for a few thing in this story:
    1. Nobody got injured,
    2. Most of the damage is somewhat minor and easily repairable,
    3. Peter and John can breathe easier now that the 'first scratch' event is history.
Good video of the aftermath. Hope all the family and the neighbours are doing okay.

So glad that you are both safe. Certainly a scary ordeal. We were through a similar experience in Westmoreland Kansas. On April 30th when an F3 tornado went through just 100 or so meters from our Dutch Star. Unfortunately, there were three other RVs in the campground closer to the path. They weee all destroyed. Fortunately, we only suffered paint damage. Lots of deep nicks from flying stones and house debris. We were in shock for days. We had heard the tornado siren sound for about 30 seconds then it stopped. When we open the coach door the tornado was literally right there. We jumped in our truck and took off so we were out of the danger zone. What a terrible experience. And the real kicker is that we had been to see the Wizard of Oz museum that morning. Stay safe.

So glad you guys are alright. My husband would have a heart attack if something like this happened to our rig. You’re lucky you had those solar panels or you’d probably be replacing that roof now. Weather in the Midwest is very unpredictable and that’s one of the reasons we don’t Rv much during late spring or early summer. I remember one year we were rving upper Michigan and I got a storm notification on my phone and it didn’t look good. Woke up my husband in the middle of the night, we grabbed some belongings (I have this emergency backpack in case we need to evacuate) and decided to spend the night in a hotel near by. We didn’t want to take a chance. Not much happened that night other than lots of lighting and rain. We came back that morning and our little camper was just waiting for us where we left it. We were lucky. Anyway, hope you guys get it all repaired and enjoy your travels soon. Stay safe.

That tornado was very close to you; all of the trees laying down in the same direction indicates that this was straight-line wind damage and from a wind that was feeding into the base of the nearby tornado. There is likely tornado damage nearby unless the funnel remained aloft. This happened very recently near our sticks and bricks home; we had the straight line wind damage but less than 2 miles away was F3 tornado damage.

I am very grateful you both survived that storm unharmed, physically at least, your nerves may take a little longer to recover! Also glad your cousins are ok. It’s amazing the rv escaped with not a lot of damage. May your future travels be much calmer! Take care.

I'm very sorry for you two and trust you will emotionally recover shortly. I love trees and hate what happened to your cousin's beautiful mature oaks.

So Glad that you both are ok. I can hear it in both of your voices how traumatic that experience was. That really was a close call. I want to think that The Doctor helped your TARDIS in some way. Good thing you never heard the cloister bells.

WOW!!! What a massive event but I am glad that you guys are OK and “weathered the storm” OK. As bad as it was it looks like you had someone up above keeping an eye on you and just moved those limbs by a few feet in your favor. Looks like you will have a lot more content than you really bargained for. Glad to see that you are OK and that your rig survived a major storm. God speed on your way home.

Most important is that you two are okay. Everything else is repairable and replaceable. Keep us posted on the progress of your warranty and insurance progress.

So sorry about your brand new RV. Grateful no one was hurt and damages weren't much. I love the idea of camping in a huge forest but so fearful and aware of the inevitable. The bigger the tree the more likely it's gonna fall and the greater the damages. Trees have killed people. Trees go up, and trees definitely will come down. We never think this will happen, but it is always possible. Now I'm even more going to try my very best to never camp near or under huge trees that possibly could reach my tent or trailer. I think there are many campgrounds that have their sites directly under huge trees. The height and size of the trees makes all the difference. Best wishes for a full recovery and summer season. 🙏🏼

It is amazing how quickly these high heat and humidity t-storms can get really nasty in localized areas. I am only a few miles away and we only had some light rain.
Very happy you are ok. I have been in a serious storm while camping and know first hand how scary it can be.

Best of wishes, and hopefully you have contacted your insurance provider. You hadn’t mentioned if the weather forecast stated heavy winds, but nonetheless glad you are physically ok! Very frightening indeed, thus makes me wonder about staying in locations with large trees in the future? Look forward to your next video episode, and once you are on the move once more!
