    What is Dolby Atmos?
    Dolby Atmos goes beyond the ordinary listening experience and puts you inside the song in a new spatial way, revealing every detail of the music with unparalleled clarity and depth.
    How does Dolby Atmos work?
    It starts with the artist. Dolby Atmos technology lets them place each voice, instrument, or sound in its own space. Wherever you hear it, you're in the center.
    Dolby Atmos is amazing new technology that really allows listeners, producers, mixers, and more experience music like never before. The only problem? It can definitely get very expensive to set up.
    Today, along with our friends from Kali Audio, we are taking you through how you can create your own Dolby Atmos room on a budget!

    this is such a brilliant idea doing this video out of all the million speaker possibilities out there - one thing I fail to understand is how do you actually connect 7.1.4 to your soundcard and daw? and also what is the best way to mix? obviously, you can't go too crazy with placements considering the fact that most of the world still listens in stereo...there is so much ground to cover with Atmos but Warren just nailed it with this one, and hopefully you read this and help us incorporate this epic 7.1.4 wonder into a setup that actually works :-) including the connectivity and the correct mindset when mixing in such an environment.

    • @kaliaudio
      @kaliaudio 2 года назад +1

      @@Edward135i a lot of people like to use passive speakers because it means that the amplification and control is all in one place, instead of distributed throughout the room. So if you want to make global adjustments or if something goes wrong, you don't need to get on a ladder 4 times to trouble shoot.
      Also a practical consideration: a union electrician in LA charges $700 to install a power outlet. So it can get pricey if you need to add power outlets for hard-to-reach speakers.

I have a 11.2 system running off of a Denon x4700h with a monoprice 2ch amp and the AVR gets really hot, I'm just thinking about how they can't really put anymore amps in these AVR's I'm sure Denon is working on a 16ch beast and it's probably going to need two power cords and weight 100lbs and be the size of two AVR's stacked on top of each other. separating the amps and having active crossovers on all of the speakers, just makes a lot of since to me.

    I think atmos/auro3d/spatial audio is really neat. I do take issue with the fact that currently there isn't a project studio/budget friendly way of decoding atmos music for mix referencing. It seems that for mix referencing the only way to do it is through an AV receiver/processor. I understand Dolby has to license their technology to be able to make money and stay in business. It seems rather redundant to have to buy another brain box just to be able to play back music. Lots of us who are interested already have fully capable computers and audio interfaces with enough channels to support many speakers. Not to mention the quality of the converters in those interfaces vs. the converters in a AV receiver. The atmos mixing plug in suite is fairly affordable for the amount of capabilities it has. I just do not understand why pros/semi pros, even hobbyists can not decode atmos streams on a Mac/Windows machine.

    Thank you for continuing to explore Atmos for us small studio owners! I'm stoked about it, but I still have so many questions. This speaker setup looks perfect for what I want to do. I record and mix in Nuendo, which has the Atmos Renderer built in. I've seen Nuendo with Atmos being used for video production, but I've yet to see audio people using it for Atmos mixing. Can one of the consumer systems like the Echo be used for mixing in Atmos? How does everything connect? What does the MTRX actually do for the price? Again, thanks for doing this!

    • @kaliaudio
      @kaliaudio 2 года назад +4

      Hey Leo,
      Can't speak to using something like the Echo for mixing, but here's what we're doing: right now we're just running playback from an Apple TV using a mix of Apple Music and Tidal. We run into a Yamaha receiver, which decodes the stream. Then we're running back up into a MTRX for processing.
      The MTRX allows us to time align all the speakers, and apply room-based correction. It works okay, but for the price I don't love it. There are cheaper ways to do this processing like a MiniDSP. Also the routing is patently terrible. You can only assign one output to any input and vice versa, so if you wanted to split the stream you're SOL. Also the documentation and customer support is similarly terrible. A huge part of my job is writing user-facing documentation for audio gear, and I am aghast at how bad all of that is for the MTRX.

    A) I was planning Exactly this system for my Atmos upgrade. The Kali IN-8s image incredibly in stereo (plus I need 3-ways). Now with the 2nd wave, which are reported to be dead silent, I’m all in. Read the Dolby specs, don’t remember the exact numbers but they want the low frequency to play flat to a certain frequency, maybe 28hz? And the IN-5s and 8s both reached that number on paper, but… if I recall correctly weren’t measured the same way. Can anyone clarify whether these meet the Dolby spec for a 7.1.4 system.
    B) This video was all about playback. What system was used for playback? And more importantly, what is the similarly affordable system for Mixing in Atmos, using these monitors? I know that bar has been lowering over the years from the RMU only days. How would you setup and calibrate a Pro Tools and a Davinci Resolve, Dolby Atmos system today? And can it be “certified”?

    • @kaliaudio
      @kaliaudio 2 года назад +3

      Great questions. For A) they do meet the spec. The only question is listening distance in terms of whether to use the 8-inch or 5-inch version. The speakers are in the DAARDT.
      B) For playback, we're using a mix of Apple Music and Tidal on an Apple TV. Going out HDMI into a Yamaha receiver, and then going out of that via balanced cables into a MTRX for processing. We're in the process of setting up ProTools for Atmos mixing as well. In that case, we'll go into the MTRX via an HD Native interface on the Digilink cable. The Avid system runs about $10k. It's technically the "right" way to do it, but in the process of setting it up we've discovered some DIY solutions that bring it down to the $2k range and don't involve Avid outboard gear.

    Pretty funny (or frustrating) to watch two dudes, heads bobbing & nodding in approval at something that by definition can't really be heard nor experienced via RUclips.
    The very aggressive push of Atmos by Dolby or whoever represents them is incredibly obvious, lately, across several of these RUclips audio orientend channels - and that always raises an eyebrow.
    So do the many concessions made in this room and video: most acousticians would get scabies at the thought of this many speakers & subs in such a small room with this kind of clearly insiufficient treatment - and not many optimists would seriously believe that people, mostly unwilling to pay the cost of a song or let alone a CD, would happily spend 5K+ $/€/£ on an "affordable" Atmos speaker system... and have the skills or take the necessary care to set it up properly.
    Yes, it's an exciting new technology and gadgetry field. Mostly if one is mixing for cinema.
    But it's not for the average Joe, just as quad or holophonics or 5.1 or 7.1. weren't.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  2 года назад +2

      Firstly, this is actually mixed down to Binaural, so if you're wearing headphones you will hear the Binaural, secondly, I'm not PUSHING Atmos or Dolby, I have no affiliation with them at all. What I do have is knowledge, knowledge that every Label is beginning to require their mixes done like this so that of the streaming services that are requiring all the music to be mixed in Immersive. I'm here creating this content, without being paid by anyone at all to help. By the way Dolby came down to Kali's room and the acoustics and EQs were set correctly, it sounded great in there, always best to listen with your ears than to make judgements based on your eyes.

    • @PrantoKoX
      @PrantoKoX 2 года назад

      @@Producelikeapro Oh your knowledge is out of doubt - that's why I, just like many others, enjoy watching this channel. Always with headphones, btw.
      I know what Atmos is, have heard it in properly equipped cinemas and studios, and I know it "folds down" to binaural, which I heard it here just as I did in a couple of other YT videos on Atmos.
      So I also have no doubt in mind that you know that binaural via the YT codec is far from the full Atmos effect & experience, which was my main point, regarding the video.
      Not hard to believe that the room sounded impressive or fun, and that the Dolby guys approved of it, after all it showcases their product, as well as the speaker manufacturer's: but I know you have more than enough studio experience and indeed knowledge to tell that, purely from a studio and an acoustics point of view, that room was all but well treated, with practically zero proper bass trapping in sight, an abundance of reflective surfaces, etc.
      Regarding the "pushing", I said THEIR push, across multiple YT channels, more or less at the same time. And that's pretty obvious to see, just like when a new plugin or a new monitor speaker or the latest Fender incarnation are released, regardless of who is or if anyone is getting paid for it - the push is for the YT viewer (be it the end consumer or the wannabe audio professional) to buy, buy, buy.
      The streaming services and whatever is left of labels will probably demand any gimmick existing or yet to come if it helps get more subscribers, but if it makes sense and if the listener/consumer will be technically and practically adequately set up to actually enjoy it and benefit from it is a whole other question. And it's not a new one, of course, as I said many of us remember quadrophonic, holophonics by Zuccarelli, surround of various specifications, etc.
      Fun times, as ever.
