  • David Hanscom, MD practiced complex orthopedic spine surgery for 32 years. He quit his practice in Seattle, WA to present his insights into solving chronic mental and physical pain. They evolved from his own 15-year battle with it. He escaped from the ordeal and discovered that mental pain is the biggest issue. Anxiety is the pain.
    His book, Back in Control: A Surgeon’s Roadmap Out of Chronic Pain systematically presents well-documented treatments for chronic pain. His self-directed action plan is available at www.thedocjourney.com, which reflects the journeys of many successful patients.
    He launched a movement called, “Dynamic Healing” that recognizes the interactions between stress and one’s coping capacity causing sustained threat physiology. More effectively dealing with stress and also increasing the resiliency of the nervous system, allows healing. He is active as a speaker, author, and consulting. Here are his activities and resources: backincontrol.com/resources-2/.

    This concept is absolutely true!.. I have scoliosis and kyphosis last diagnosed 20 years ago 66 degrees/55 degrees S curve..
    NO surgery and glad, 66 years old.. had curves since childhood.. Have had periods of backpain that all correlated to extreme stress

    Wow that was a fantastic interview. When I found out my scoliosis had progressed I had a panic attack. I didn’t realize I was in fight or flight. I am very interested in trying out Dr. Hanscom’s program.

    Thank you for this very informative talk! I have a question: if scoliosis does NOT cause pain, as Dr. says, then what does?

    • @MoveWithScoliosis
      @MoveWithScoliosis  3 месяца назад

      What he means is that the fact that the bones are shaped differently doesn’t cause pain. The connective tissue that has to adjust because of the scoliosis can however!

    It has not subtitles. Is he talking about Vbt or only about the old fusion?

      Mainly old fusion. We didn’t speak specifically about VBT. I’ll see if I can add subtitles!

      @@MoveWithScoliosis Thanks and it would be good to know about adults who have Vbt. I think it would be great to combine it with non-surgical treatments to reduce the risks of tether breakage.

    he's overexaggerating his pessimism of the surgeries. I know lots of people who did well after their scoliosis surgeries even decades later. Even the published journals state that most patients at best resolve their pain, at worst just stay around the same as they were pre operatively. he's cherry picking the bad cases so he can promote his pseudo-mental holistic approach which i cannot really take seriously since ive heard this sort of thing before many times from countless snakeoil salesmen.
    contrary to what he said, scoliosis can and does cause pain and the only way to alleviate it is to change the underlying structure. you cannot change the mind to forget the pain away because the pain did not initiate from the mind in the first place, it initiated from the degradation of the body due to ageing or progression of the condition.

      Agreed, I had terrible back pain before I had thoracic spinal fusion which alleviated the problem. Now I'm only bothered by pain from the lumber curve which wasn't operated on. It's ridiculous for him to suggest severe curvatures wouldn't cause pain and that the pain is all in people's head.
