Had my 1-person version for many years now. I've used it in rain, sleet and snow and it's never leaked once. At one point I set it up in a very poor spot with a ground sheet that extended too far out the sides, I had an inch of water up the outside of the bathtub floor on all sides and water sloshing around beneath me. Zero leaks. I've had it up in the mountains in Sweden and Norway, I've taken it on numerous fishing trips, car camping and so on. It has the same zipper design and I have never had a single issue with bugs getting inside. So I'd chalk that up to the user simply not checking to make sure the zips almost kiss one another. It's a great tent and easy to recommend if you are OK with the weight and size.

@@dimitrz2000 No. You have to do it lying down. It is finicky but doable. It's not a tent you want to be stuck inside for a long time. It is a quality tent in terms of materials and workmanship but it's not a tent for everyone.

    • @FuttFel
      @FuttFel 3 года назад +3

@@dimitrz2000 Correction, I just set it up in my flat and you can sit up near the head end of the tent, but with a slightly arched back and with your hair touching the bugnet. Im 170cm or 5'6"

      @@FuttFel many thanks , I got a fair idea.
I like to spend time inside my tents like reading a book , chatting with trek/ hike friends or cooking outside the tent opening with myself perched comfortably inside , in addition to changing cloths or body wipe ( incase bathing outside is not an option)
So tent space matters a lot to me , hence the question . And thanks for taking your time to answer in detail. 👍🏻

Speaking of creatures in a tent, one night I backpacked into a campsite at Point Reyes National Seashore about 30 miles north of San Francisco. It rained cats and dogs all night with high winds also. In the morning there was a Pacific Tree Frog in my tent. You know it rained hard when even a frog seeks refuge from the storm

    my name is Markus.
I'm from Germany. I have had the Gossamer I from Jack Wolfskin for many years. It was and is in frequent use in all weathers. I am thrilled to this day. It is dense, compact and light. A small tarp stretched over the entrance makes it easy to get on and off dry.

I love my original gossamer. Thank you for pointing out its one small flaw, I will cut the zip protector flap to make sure I am getting the zippers to 100% meet. Easy fix. The hydrostatic head on this is high. Anything below a 3 is to me heading for trouble in real time. I modify all my tents to make them much better, but if I paid for the mods instead it would make the tents far more expensive. One super huge mod is to leave in your fave camping site a perfectly cut thick pile carpet piece in a black plastic bag. It transforms a tent into a cabin.

Luke you should work with a company to try produce your own tent. Take the practices and methods you know that make a good tent and try to make a good cost effective tent that you can actually confidently push to your viewers. I think that’d be pretty interesting.
You could even go and make a series on you reviewing different models of your own tent and giving feedback and deciding what the weaknesses are and how you’ll fix them :)

My Vango Cairngorm tent has the same zipper design with the piece of fabric covering the corner, never had issues with bugs if you take a moment to make sure they are properly closed (which I always do cause I HATE spiders!). The issue you mention in your full review of the door tie-off loops obstructing the zipper seems pretty minor, I feel like I'd live with it. I reckon this could be my new tent! The Welsh hills see their fair share of rain!! Looks like the perfect blend of the Ionosphere (which is comically small for my *ahem* larger frame) and the 2P size of my Vango, without the setup faff. Perfect! Love the way you test it. I worked with a guy who would buy land and would wait only till after a heavy downpour to go look at land. Friends would ask him why and he simply said you don't know the lands characteristics until you see it when it is wet. Mother in law got a house at a really good price once and I never saw it until after she purchased it without asking advice. I know why they sold it cheap after I did finally see it. It was at the bottom of a hill and after a heavier rain water would go right into the house. I was there when she discovered it and spent the whole time out in the rain trying to divert the water flow to keep it out of the house with a shovel. So yeah, it pays to check it out under bad conditions before getting it.

My main gripe is with the design of the entry/vestibule area. If you were to attempt to get in that tent during a rainstorm (especially that one), I see zero chance of it remaining dry during entry. Once the vestibule is unzipped, the internal mesh becomes fully exposed. Tents with vertical walls mitigate this by having just that, vertical walls.

I was not expecting that weather so was very glad that this tent remained rooted to the spot, 100% dry and surprisingly quiet in the very strong winds. It's light enough to carry on hikes, so easy to put up and properly robust in heavy weather. I also kept finding bugs in the tent and was wondering how they kept getting in! Mystery solved - thanks Luke!

I have spent a lot of time in tents, and my experience has shown that you really don't get a feel for a tent properly unless your in the tent when its raining. With condensation and osmoses from touching the fabric when its saturated is a important point when wanting to be dry. This can be combated by having duel levels of protection. Sorry for your loss. Great to hear about the tent. I have thought about this tent, but I purchased the Naturehike Mongar 2 instead. Being a big guy i really wanted the head room.

Great review. I have this tent for a couple years now. Originally got it for a hike through Slovenia in variable weather and it held out well. One trick I found is to leave the outer tent attached to the inner tent when folding, so the inside doesn't get wet when you have to set it up again during rain.
I did have problems with condensation though. Two people in humid weather that cools off during the night and the inside was just covered in droplets. Most of it flew down to the sides but some of it did drip into the inner tent. Usually not a problem when I'm on my own but still I think condensation is its main issue. Opening the outer tent flaps wasn't really an option as it was covering all our gear.
Apart from that it's lightweight and compact, easy to set up, and a great value for its money (even at the price I got it for which is apparently twice what Luke paid!). Never had problems with spiders.

I will take my chilbo snow camo 2 different styled vestibules, waterproof and plenty of room. The only thing that failed was skinny stakes during hail / wind storm. Have used it for 6+ years. …and yes…I have treated it, reinforced seams and been just peachy!
    Great vid yo! 💯🇺🇸

I have the one person version & I actually commented on the question you asked if we thought it would leak & I said 'not a chance' & I'm glad that was the case,I live in the Lake District in the UK and all it ever does here is rain & even as I'm typing this in late June & 'summer' the rain is bouncing 🌧️ & the JW Gossamer has never ever failed me ..I have numerous tents & the Gossamer is without doubt the most waterproof tent I own & also have actually ever seen,it's an absolute beast of a tent for harsh weather conditions..sad news on the loss of a family member, deepest condolences to you in regards to that..R.I.P 💔

My first backpack was a Jack Wolfskin Denali 65. At over 6lbs it's pretty heavy but the build quality and robustness is on another level. Great product. Not much info on Jack Wolfskin here in the USA but glad I got the pack, still have it too 👍

I own one. It's waterproof and windproof. I did get a little leakage after a few months of use, but nothing that seam sealer can't fix. 9/10

Love your channel! Thank you for all the time/information you put into the reviews and the great adventures along with your genuine love of the outdoors. I fully intend to be a Patreon Supporter asap. I subscribed a while back but hadn't really started to consistently watch the reviews and adventures until recently. You and Susie both are a joy to watch and learn from, together and individually. Deeply sorry for your loss. Prayers for you and your family❤
My name is Amber... I love the outdoors and I have camped before at campgrounds years ago when I was younger. As I have gotten older I realize my appreciation and love for the outdoors has grown in a good way. I also realize there is a difference in just camping versus hiking and camping put together...if that makes sense. As I have started to subscribe to numerous outdoor adventure type channels, my desire to adventure into the woods is huge and I love being out in nature. My favorite channels so far is your channel and Adventure Archives. I have camped before but I am new to the hiking/backpacking side of it. We have a new trail near where I live that I have hiked a few times and I have enjoyed it so much! Due to inexperience and lack of knowledge on some things since I am a newbie....I have my fears of certain things naturally, but know that I love being in the woods and the solitude it brings. So far this trail has only one camp site and I thought... it being so close to home...it would be a good starter for me. I am gradually making sure I have all the basics I need. I like a lot of the gear you have recently reviewed. I especially like the Jack Wolfskin Gossamer II tent. I think I would like this tent in cooler weather but wasn't sure what it would be like in warmer weather considering it doesn't offer a lot of ventilation. I was happy to see it does not leak but wonder what other tent you might suggest that does not leak but also has a little more ventilation in warmer weather. Would the Gossamer be alright or would it be stuffy? Sorry for the length of my message. Just wanted to give a little introduction I suppose. I love the Soto Windmaster Stove and the OneTigris Chair among lots of other gear you review. Also what would be on your list of things to take for a first time backpacking adventure along with any tips or advice? Thanks for taking the time to read this! I have great respect and appreciation for you and Susie for all you both do and bring to all of us watching!❤ Strength and Honor!!!
    ~Amber Leigh~

Can't wait for you to "test night" the One Tigris Cosmitto tent in heavy rain. Thank you for pointing out the bug invasion of the Jack Wolfskin Gossamer 2 tent. Thank you for proving that it is waterproof after a full week of setup. There must be a solution to the bug invasion which is not acceptable. Thank you!!

I'm really impressed with the waterproofness and the low amount of condensation. I would just spray bug repellent around the zipper areas to keep the spiders and bugs out. Sorry for the loss of your family member, but thanks for the video, great job.

Looks nice! There's no way I could have resisted a nap in the tent during the rain and thunder at around 4:00.
Any chance you might look at the Kuiu tents in the future? Love me some fly-first tents, ala Hilleberg style...

Luke, camping videos while in rain/thunderstorms on RUclips are booming. Just a suggestion, please make an overnight video while camping in heavy rain/thunderstorm doing simple tasks as making dinner, building a fire, etc. I would love to see a video. Oh, you're near me! Ya, it's rainy af. A Camelbak and an umbrella are pretty much staple items with how hot and wet it is in this region. Also, the mosquitos are the size of birds.
I'm sorry for your loss. 🥺
