If you're watching this video in 2021, add the "write-on" function to your text layer and trace over your text with the tool on that layer (I used the same colour as the background for tracing). DONT ADD THE ADJUSTMENT LAYER. Once you've traced over the text, go down to "paint style" under "write-on" and put it onto "reveal original image". Render the in and out and you're sweet. Also no need for the track matte key. Don't do what I did and claw your eyes out for 3 hours trying to figure out why it isn't working.

The adjustment layer's write-on effect has the brush position key points, but the brush is transparent, the white brush stroke is gone. What should I do to make this effect reusable? the same thing happened to me instead of putting the track matte key effect on the adjustment layer, put it on the text itself and select "matte luma" instead of matte alpha and keep the adjustment layer above the text don't move them
Thanks, almost didnt work because I found 2 things... the text color of Write-On has to be the color of the text you want and also the last keyframe has to be at the end of the clip for it to show properly. Appreciate the tut

I couldn't get this to work at all. Whenever I selected the brush to reposition it, Adobe pro instead selected the text layer. When I evernaully did grab the brush, it would add extra little dots that threw the whole thing out of whack. Any advice welcome
You’re missing something. My white circle does not follow where I draw. It stays very close to original position and has a thin blue line and a point that goes to original position.

Is it possible to adjust the thickness while writing over the text? When I try to keyframe the thickness, the whole line gets adjusted. Maybe I'm missing something... I want this effect on a calligraphic font, so on intersecting text lines the stroke width needs to be smaller and/or bigger. Thanks!

Actually instead of creating an additional colour matte, copy the 'Write-on' from the 'adjustment layer' and then paste it into a new color matte layer and delete the 'adjustment layer'.

At the top right of the screen, you're in an area that is next to Libraries. I'm using 2018 version. What does it say up there next to Libraries? What part of the program are you in? I don't have the effects showing in the bottom left of my workspace so I can't access what is being accessed. If I could just figure out where you are. Anyone?
I tried doing 2 pieces of text with different font so I did them seperately when I put them back it kept lagging and when I rendered them together it seemed like the adjustment layer was on top
Expand the "Write-on" tab and at the bottom look for Paint Style and then choose "Reveal Original Image." I had the same problem and a bit of messing around got it right haha I hope it works for you
When I Track Matte Key my video goes black and then the wording never appears on the screen. I rendered the footage already but even still nothing comes up. Do you know what I am doing wrong? Is there a special preference or something I am missing?
I had the same problem, in his video, he has a video underneath the track matte, so if you create a colour matte, (you can do this by hitting the new button in the project bin area and choosing whatever colour you want your text to sit on) and then slide that underneath it and youll find the text writes on :)

Using a transparent video instead of an adjustment layer did the trick for me!

This was great!! I am brand new to Premiere Pro and this enabled me to get the exact effect I wanted. :)
My Premiere Pro version is 23.1.0 'write on' is under obsolete and nothing happens when I try to create key frames for the animation.

try using brush color as black. it worked for me!

an easier final step is to just go to the Write-on effect and in the paint style drop down menu; select "Reveal Original Image"
