Alright, guys, gals and else, for all who got STUCK in 3:20, here´s the detail you probably missed on how you actually draw the frame by frame thingy. Let´s go step by step: FIRST; observe in 3:19 how he selects the "Write On" effect bar in Control Effects. It´s really quick, one can almost miss it. That´s how you highlight the cursor to track the matte key. SECOND; the Write On effect DOESN´T step foward the frames automaticaly. So you must move the frames yourself. You can use Right Arrow on your keyboard to advance one frame. Ok, that being said, the actual drawing takes the following pattern: 1) Select Write On bar (important!); 2) Set first key frame; Move cursor to first brush position; 3) Step to next frame with right arrow key; Move cursor to next brush position; (Here´s where you can notice the key frame line forming in the brush!). 4) Step to next frame; Move cursor. 5) And keep repeating. Obs: This is not just for beginners. Pros gets stuck too, I get stuck too sometimes, so don´t feel bad and don´t let anyone make you feel bad. If you are using these effects that means you are way passed the noobie point, so cheers. :)
IMPORTANT TIP: To be able to drag the white dot, you have to click the "Write Off" above the brush position. I don't know why he just went over this and it really confused me, thank goodness I found other videos mentioning this.
I agree, this guy also skipped over some hotkeys so I 'm wondering how much he actually knows. For those doubly confused and don't know what "Write off" is, there should be the option to disable write on effect by clicking the tiny FX logo, just play around with that and you'll be able to move the dot.

Great tutorial! Works great if it’s one or two words. But a lot of times I have build a statement graphic with a paragraph or two. Wish there was a plug-in for that.

So I was doing pretty well up until the setting up of the key frames. For whatever reason I’m not able to move the white ball that’s created from the brush size to start putting key frames. Any advice on how to proceed?
it may be your graphic card issue or slow PC, it plays main role for adobe premiere pro, it requires powerful system, make sure to tag write on , it must be selected before you drag brush tool for creating new keyframes

The patience that this effect requires is crazy!!!!! But this would only take few seconda in canva which is unfair.... I am just starting doing video editing and I chose adobe premiere pro and it's challengin, but I've already learned some few effects and currently doing my intoruction video to get direct clients
why dont you apply the write on filter directly to the text? what is the point of applying this filter to the video layer? and then masking thru the text layer. is it so you can do more effects on the video layer?

Wouldn't it be a lot easier to set the beginning and end key frames for the stroke and then add the individual key frames along the line later? That way you could get a straighter line and it wouldn't be so tedious. Just a thought.
Is it possible to adjust the thickness while writing over the text? When I try to keyframe the thickness, the whole line gets adjusted. Maybe I'm missing something... I want this effect on a calligraphic font, so on intersecting text lines the stroke width needs to be smaller and/or bigger. Thanks!
The next key frame is to be set in the next video frame, So play the video further and place the next point. Or you can just use the arrow key on keyboard to go to the next frame.

I don't know why my premiere pro is not cooperating with me but I literally do the same thing up until setting the keyframe and it doesn't show me the path when I try to trace the text nor shows me the next keyframe in the tiny transparent video window. Hello, I used this effect for the text on a photo. Actually for the text on my logo. First I made this logo transparent with the color key and then I applied the steps in the video. But the result is problematic in a way that I don't understand. In other words, there is text in the form of a white line in the video. What do you think I should do? Thank you from now

Good grief! Whats the trick to grabbing the actual cross hair to move the new key frame instead of the previous key frame set? I've zoomed in to the max and more of than not I end up dragging around a random key frame instead of moving the #$%* cursor! Suggestions?

@@cineguac I'm having the same issue. I'm following every step but the dot doesn't create the line like in your tutorial. When I try to move the dot either the whole screen is selected or only the circle with the cross in the middle. How do you select both the dot and the circle around it? Thanks.
@@hamullah Make sure the brush position option is selected/highlighted in your effect controls. With that selected, you can freely drag the blue circle anywhere.

Several questions. I used it today in the 2023 version, and Adobe in their infinite wisdom, put the WriteOn effect in the Obsolete folder. Because they don't want to support it in OS upgrades? Also, in my 2023 version, the transparency layer wasn't transparent, very weird. When I did it in my 2021 version (I am an instructor with lots of computers) the lettering reversed itself at the end, so any idea why at the end of the 5 second animation does it go backwards and erase the letters? The script movement follows the path and erases what is there. Is it possible all my glitches today is the reason they put it in Obsolete? Thank you for the help!

Did you know how to increase the duration of the write on? I finished the brush stroke but it write very quickly

You have to set multiple keyframes to create a path. Make sure every time you move the brush, a new key frame is created.
The next key frame is to be set in the next video frame, So play the video further and place the next point. Or you can just use the arrow key on keyboard to go to the next frame.

Make sure you increase your brush size and set keyframes every time you move the white dot

Try adjusting the stroke length!
To move the dot click on Write-on and you will be able to do so
