    Looked a real big city and a long history too, loved the Roman connection with it being the birthplace of two Emperors. Another superb Cathedral and what an amazing old clock. Mrs Metalman would be very happy with the Old Town and to be fair I would enjoy it too and despite the crowds, I think the train up to the church instead of that hike. Either way worth it for the view inside the church and I never knew France had such amazing Roman ruins as that and what a superb place to watch the setting sun. That that is what I call 'proper' art, none of this modem rubbish, a must see if in the city. Did not realise there was so much to see and do in Lyon and a 'free' zoo too, a great tour around, cheers Alan

    Superbe video Barnyz 👏👌 The narration is great to listen and very interesting. We have been to Lyon in 2006 but only for a day and we saw Place Bellcour and walk on the bridge that leads to the old city …we did love the old city very much . I don’t know the city very well but your 10 highlights were very nice and sure made us want to go back .

    Excellent video my friends. We have been to Lyon a couple of times and we love it. I love the museum with the Bartholdi fountain. The first time we visited the city the fountain was completely surrounded by scaffolding, but last year it was not and it looked so beautiful. The interior of Notre Dame is also quite wonderful and one of Mai's favorites in all of Europe. The inside of the church has wonderful lavish decorations and the frescos really compliment that fact. Great video of a really wonderful city my friend (Very enjoyable).👍👍 Have a great weekend and cheers from Shawn and Mai. 🍻🍻

    For the traveller from Paris, and that city’s rather monochrome palette of grey to greyer (with splashes of very intermittent colour to relieve the gloom, for Paris knows that it’s a resolutely northern place, and its buildings reflect those often cloudy skies), the first thing that strikes you about Lyon, 250 miles to the south, are the warm colours. Someone described the city’s overall appearance as like a crate of peaches ripening in the sun and this captures it nicely, as the red roofs and sun-bleached, fading stone more than hint of Le Midi, a hop-skip-and-jump down the Rhone Valley (Vienne? Valence? Montélimar?) It’s no accident that Lyon is almost exactly on the same latitude as Milan and Venice, as there is more than a hint of the Italianate in the ochre walls. Lyon is a lovely open city, with significant elevation on one side - reminiscent of Grenoble - looking east over the rivers divided by Presqu'île, across the rest of town. The most charming bit is the oldest bit, as is always the case in most French (and other countries’) cities. I almost gave myself a double hernia trying to romp up Fourvière Hill, but the pain soon eased when I clocked the majestic views from atop. There are also significant Roman ruins up here that are more extensive than I’d expected; a couple of theatres and other sundry bits and bobs. Least said about the Basilica (a sort of Romanesque/Byzantine mess of a mash-up) itself, the better. The reason to be up here are the views. The best church in Lyon is the main cathedral just down the hill. The rest of the time is best spent just aimlessly wandering. The old working-class district of La Croix-Rousse is a (slightly gentrified) throwback to Lyon’s industrial past; a kind of self-contained village within the city. Place Bellecour, the city’s main square is a big, pompous, unwieldy thing and resembles nothing so much as a military parade ground. You can imagine Napoleon rallying his troops here on his way back from exile, (even if he never did.) But minor quibbles aside, Lyon can easily cope with 3 days of your life. I still can’t quite decide if its ‘northern’ or ‘southern’, though; I have always personally marked the start of Le Midi on this eastern side of France at Montélimar, but on a midsummer’s day in Lyon, with the cicadas’ electric buzzing filling the air: this could well be the _true_ south. But where oh, where, are the shutters?!

      If Lyon is the best city in France, I rather never come back to France at all. Spent half the trip in a journey to the police station because my dad got pickpocketed as soon as we arrived in Vieux Lyon station. We were humiliated at the police station as if we were in the wrong for being robbed. On our way back to the airport, now knowing better about what could happen, we noticed how big the pickpocketing gang is and how they keep circulating around the station looking for prays like us (tired tourists with elderly people and a baby just wanting to get to the hotel soon). Beware when your buying your tickets or using your cards, these “lovely young ladies” desperate to help you are watching you to use your PIN number over your shoulders and will get all your money within 2 minutes after pickpocketing you. The police was extremely unhelpful and rude in a way that I’ve never seen in my whole life. I’ll never be coming back to Lyon and I’m not impressed with French food and hospitality in general. I’ll probably never put my feet in France at all.

    • @malthuswasright
      @malthuswasright 17 дней назад

      @@marinadepaulasilva6273 Pickpockets operate in any major city - if you're not going to visit somewhere for that reason you'll never leave home. FWIW I spent a week there recently and felt perfectly safe wherever I went. The food in France is fantastically varied - it's completely different from north to south and east to west, so I'd be surprised if you were unimpressed by all of it. There's nothing wrong with French hospitality either, but if you're used to US hospitality where you're badgered all the time, and never left alone to enjoy your meal, I can see why you might have been frustrated. It's not worse, just different. Give it and Lyon another try.
