DJ Jazzy Jeff reacts to my tape scratching version of his Peter Piper routine

- DJ Jazzy Jeff was a special guest at my company's 2022 holiday party, and while he was there, I got a chance to share my own rendition of his famous Peter Piper routine, which I performed on my musical invention, The ScrubBoard. Sharing this with him and seeing his reaction was truly one of the highlights of my life. The only problem was that this all happened over Zoom, because this was during covid, so I didn't actually get to meet him in person. But on the other hand, if it had been in person, I probably wouldn't have gotten the whole thing on video. And -- because he gave me permission -- I am now able to share the video with the world! Enjoy.

Bro didn't just scratch he scarily recreated the whole routine. Props. The kick pedal aspect is lit as hell.
Part of his rig was markers and rubber bands. Absolute mad scientist rig
Jeremy would have melted the audience's faces off if he performed this live on the set of In Living Color in the 80's
This is awesome- seeing your home made invention (with sharpies and elestic bands, no less) played so well and Jazzy Jeff smiling broadly hearing and seeing it is an absolute joy.
Seeing was cool, hearing it was rad!
Straight outta the 80s! How cool to have DJ Jazzy Jeff not only critique your video and methods, but praise them too! Having someone of his status tell you how you understand the ethos, and bring it to life in an entirely new way, while retaining the essence of "old skool" scratching, is awesome! Bravo!
Incredible.
That dude is soon to be 59 years old but looks and shows the enthusiasm of a guy half his age. Doing what you love must keep you young.
Amazing skills on your marvelous machine btw. Mind blowing.
100%
this has under 1000 views and only 15 comments rn..so i had to post before it's huge, obvious that your sound engineering and resulting output are exceptional.
It's funny you say you have to post a comment before it got huge. Does it matter if it huge or not?
It could stay at low views but that doesn't mean the video is bad. A lot of people.ake great videos that people don't see.
The video is dope tho.
Good things takes time, he'll be famous.
Do you usually come back later to post comments.😂
@@beatbuildersstudio It's the "I knew it, before it was cool" thing...😂
It was just posted give it time lil bro.
Getting that co-sign from Jazzy Jeff is like getting Steph Curry telling you that you have a nice shot, or Peyton Manning telling you "Nice Throw". That is the ultimate compliment.
Great analogy
DJ Jazzy Jeff knows all about nice throws!
Completely agree with your analogy! Except Peyton Manning was known for throwing "ducks" on the field meaning he threw a lot of wobbly passes. But he also threw a lot of wobbly touchdowns! LOL!
@@DissociatedWomenIncorporatedmore like tosses😂😂😂
@@jelly7310 there’s many wonderful ways to describe his ejections from Uncle Phil’s house 😄
DAMMMMNNNN...I've never seen DJ Jazzy react like that to another DJ's work. He was truly in awe of your work, the scratchin & your instrument. How in the world did you ever think to translate scratching into linear 2 in. tape?
Its awesome that someone invented something nd made it work. Technology is outdated
tape scratching used to be big in Lithuania
Yeah, but does he keep Will Smiths wife's name out his mother trucking mouth???
@@carlt8188some jokes are too soon. Some are too late.
The look of astonishment on Jeff’s face is a beautiful thing
Love it when artists see someone's version of their work and are actually impressed by it!
Same energy as Jacoby Shaddix when dude shows him their super slow, melancholy version of Last Resort
And Coby Dick has the biggest smile on his face, hands behind his head, fingers intertwined, taking it all in, and finishes with huge praise
I absolutely love it
Crazy ASF .. Imagine if in the 80s/90s all DJs designed their own scratch rigs that would've been a crazy tech boom
Reminds me of Flash’s homemade drum machine, of which surprisingly little information exists. There’s recordings of him using it but almost nothing about how it actually works.
Scratching with tape is brilliant. I didn't know that was even a thing, let alone that it'd sound so much like a turntable.
MATE! Why the hell is this not trending?! As someone who has seen Jam Master Jay do this live (and attempted to copy and fail on turntables myself), this was truly dope. Seriously, seriously dope. Massive respect to your technological talents, not to mention your musical talent.
Got a sharpie holding down the piece of wood he's using for crab scratches 😅
Love it.
As a DJ, and a lifelong fan of Jazzy Jeff, which is my #1 DJ idol as well, it is something when you can blow away even him.
Great work done here
All the 80s babies in here smiling big. We appreciate y'all for bringing it back ❤
This is one of those turning points in music even if the tech is over 30 years old (much older lol), this is revolutionary, a truly genius idea 🔥🔥💯
This is by far one of the cooliest things ive ever seen on youtube
That was NUTS!!! 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 Yo! he can be an attraction at ANY Djing Event or Any Classic hip hop event... #Genius 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾💪🏾👍🏽
DJ Jazzy Jeff such a true legend and always a class act.
Jeff's face is priceless! That's an awesome creation.
I found this guy a long time ago. I was amazed that he had the enthusiasm to take the time and build this thing and keep at it. He could have just went out and bought some tables. He has like 3 or 4 different prototypes. It's nuts. When I first started scratching I would steal the turntable from my parents old console stereo and had to put penny's on the needle head just so it wouldn't skip. If your into people being creative look on you tube fir a guy from Arizona scratches on a boombox cassette. He uses 2 of them to mix and scratch. Sounds kinda good too. Dj craze found him and was mind blown. How the hell does he keep the cue? He even does back and forth. Always loved the scratch sound.
My jaw hurts from the fall! That was ridiculously cool! Not only is the machine killer but your skill/rendition was next level! And congrats on the certified legit complement! 💯
I love how as soon as you started he sat up like "hold up, this kid's got something" well done man, what an absolutely genius idea!
Man how can you not just smile while watching this. Must feel amazing to see Jeff react like that.
This was super cool to see on so many levels. You being able to show such a sick homage to someone else’s work, in a unique manner that you invented, for them to witness and genuinely have that kind of reaction…that’s some special stuff right there. Kudos on absolutely everything that went into this and I’m so happy you got to have such a special moment to remember. Thank you for sharing and to Jazzy Jeff for giving permission to do so. Stay creative!
I watched this with jaw agape. It sounded 100% flawless--not only was the scratching perfect, I couldn't tell I wasn't listening to vinyl. Just all of the wow.
Seen this year's ago. Dope as hell. Someone give him a job asap
Jeff is dope AF. He really seems to embrace technology. Over the holidays I watched his live streams like crazy and Nu-Mark challenged him to an all vinyl set. It was enjoyable but you could tell he was a little out of his comfort zone. I haven't peeped his rig close enough to see if he uses them but you don't even need needles when scratching vinyl in Serrato now. Keep doing what you're doing. Try not to get too lost in perfecting all the super subtle characteristics. Jeff was impressed enough with the older version without the weighted playheads.
Life long DJ and Audio engineer here to say - You blew my mind. Amazing.
This is creative as hell!
Doooood- that was phenomenal! Seems like you have the "soul" of a true DJ! And to see Jazzy Jeff's off-the cuff reaction like that was fantastic! Keep doing what you're doing!
ONE YEAR LATER!! So glad DJJJ was cool with putting this out! it was such a thrill to have this unplanned interaction and "reaction video" unfold right before us during the meeting. It was truly amazing!!
Bless you, simple things and simple minds. This was pathetic
@@leonardhpls6 The irony of you calling OP pathetic... yet opting to do so via replying to a comment made by his coworker -- implying you had clearly just spent your time hate-scrolling the entire comment section prior to writing said reply.

big up
Insane unique scratching and so good of Jazzy Jeff to spend time and be positive about it
i shed a few tears watching this.. long live 80s hip hop
That's dope!!!! Even getting the crab motion 9n the "fader"
Exactly, that's the part that blew my mind the most 🤯
1.8k views, 125 thumbs up! To be honest, should be like 1000 times what it is. Amazing scratching machine and like Jazzy Jeff said, wow you are a genius!
This is insane!! So refreshing to see continuous innovations for the DJ artform, Kudos!
this is intensively cool having Jazzy Jeff react is just icing on the cake, gnarly
I did not know what to expect. That was certainly impressive, props for your ingenuity. Dope.
Turntablism already blows my mind and to see this!!🤯🤯 this man’s a genius for real
It's like watching someone play a homemade trumpet, but it sounds exactly like a guitar solo. You are a genius for being able to take resulting sounds and patterns from one form, and use an entirely different form to reproduce them, and the experience of producing them as an artist. It's like reinventing the paint brush to look like a tomato, but yet it works just as well as the paint brush. In fact, it works better...you don't have to destroy vinyl. You can still get the analog feel for the turntables, as the DJ, not removed from it by technological advances of the last 2 decades...a real tactile control, much like an old muscle car, without the safety of traction control and anti-lock brakes; you're in control, for better or worse. And still getting to experience this active and hands-on way to interact with your instrument, without having to sacrifice vinyl...you could really be onto something. I'm more than impressed. Oh, and you could scratch like a mofo too? Showoff...lol
This is about the coolest thing that can happen to a musician! Jazzy is such a cool dude!
Those twiddles and crabs sound so good that that crazy sharpie device you made! So sick.
That was so cool! I guess I thought you were going to be working with reel-to-reel, but I wasn't sure what to expect really when the video started. Then you started doing your thing and I was so blown away. It was also cool to watch DJ Jazzy Jeff's reaction when you started going as well. Kudos to you! It was a privilege to get to watch that. And I'm happy for you that you got that rad moment with the legendary DJ Jazzy Jeff.
this makes me smile.turntablism was huge part of my life when i was younger.
So cool. Love seeing such an unexpected pairing of people come together to celebrate such a cool art form. I just hope real DJ-ing and turntablism don’t become lost art forms.
with videos like this, it will always stay alive
It’s wonderful to see how HipHop has touched people’s lives. This is absolutely awesome.
This was awesome! I remember having a Walkman where I could press certain buttons halfway down and get different effects with the pitch o f the music but this was next level great work!!!!
Dude, tying together art and an engineering mind in such a bad ass way. Kudos to ypu, for reals.
Completely blown away as Jeff was by your tape routine. So happy for you to have this well deserved moment. Props man
This is amazing dude I love it and Jazzy Jeff loving it is even better!
Just another reason why the DJ is named first in the group. He’s such a down to earth dude!!
I got to see jazzy Jeff in concert in 1989. It was fresh and def.
Keep going! I couldn't stop smiling whilst listening
Bringing the tape back from the past into the future , understanding the flow and the technique of scratching Skills . Keep discovering the Gifts we have
This is definitely gift from above. Keep on flow Amazing skills 🔊🎶🎶🎶🎧🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵
this is one of the most inventive things i’ve ever seen. thank you for your contribution to this space! decades later, and there are still tricks to be learned. 🙂
This is why america is a global superpower and cannot be defeated in any way shape or form. Truely incredible people. The world is a great place because of your efforts. Much appreciated from Australia. Thankyou
I'm so happy you exist! Thank you.
Wow!!😮 How has this not broken the internet??!!
👏👏👏
As a fan of analog music reproduction vinyl or cassette, this is truly amazing!
Bad ass.... That's so dope. Congrats.
Love how the tape quality gets crappier and crappier with each pass on the head. Very neat.
THAT is what I call INNOVATION!! Well done!
Dude....that not only was off the hook.... but it brought me back to a good time in my life..
Dude literally reinvented scratching in front of one of the pioneers of scratching...
Amazing technology at its finest!
Thats bad ass. Amazing build and so cool that Jazzy got to give you the props you deserve.
Thank God that this arrived on my feed. That was amazing, and seeing one of your heroes reacting to your work?! That setup looked like a musical instrument really. Having a header like a bottleneck slide, using your fingers on the tape like playing a guitar, even having a foot pedal! Amazing!
Talent, my hat is off to you for inventing this device. Like Jeff said, Genius!!!
Absolutely Amazing!
this is bloody amazing!
Mesmerizing! This is inspiring!
I love it. This is brilliant, BRAVO! Can't wait for the next phase.
I love getting in on the ground floor before something blows up. Amazing my friend!

Fantastic machine and beautiful memory you have here! Big up from Poland and thank you algorithm for showing me this!
This man is an actual engineer!! He built a contraption hip-hop macros, the turn table shortcuts.
Wholesome DJ vibes
