  • In 1988, presidential candidate George H.W. Bush had one imperative: prove he was his own man, capable of commander in chief. With a deft, witty, and wholly entertaining convention speech, Bush defied the odds, beat back the wimp factor, and launched himself to election victory.
    Political speech experts featured in this episode include:
    Michael A. Cohen
    Author, Live From The Campaign Trail
    Robert Lehrman
    Chief Speechwriter for Vice President Gore and Professor of Speechwriting, American University
    Brian Morgenstern
    Republican Congressional Aide and Vice President, New York Young Republican Club
    Jeff Shesol
    Speechwriter for President Clinton and Founding Partner, West Wing Writers
    PODIUM is a bi-weekly series that embraces the art of public speaking and honors those with something to say. Lingual luring is a form of aggressive mimicry in which a predator (typically a snake or turtle) uses its tongue to fool potential prey into approaching close to what appears to be a small wriggling worm.
      Lingual lures are very well developed in young alligator snapping turtles which wait underwater with their mouths open. The tongue is wriggled like a worm and fishes attracted to it are captured by a rapid snapping of the mouth.

      16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

      Bush should have fought harder with Congress and not raised taxes and kept his word. But I still think he was a good president during his time in the White House. He lacked some of what Reagan had, but he’s not a bad guy either. Everyone makes mistakes even the best presidents do sometimes. May God bless the Bush clan and millions of their loved ones including the American citizens as they have the memorial service for President George HW Bush!!!!

    Ironic that he was seen as a wimp and an underdog. Notwithstanding Reagan's coattails, Dukakis was a lousy candidate with no charisma and, at the time, unpopular policies. How he had a lead in the polls is beyond me.

    • @munimathbypeterfelton6251
      @munimathbypeterfelton6251 Год назад +1

      Dukakis wasn’t perfect. But there were plenty of Americans who wanted Democratic leadership back in the White House after the Reagan Administration. And once Bush picked Quayle as his running mate, many Americans were like, oh heck no! All it took was for Bernard Shaw’s dagger of a question about the death penalty posed to Dukakis at the beginning of the second presidential debate in 1988 for Bush and co. to have a field day from that point forward.

    • @broadstreet21
      @broadstreet21 Год назад +1

      @@munimathbypeterfelton6251 Interesting. Besides, I saw that exchange with Dukakis. Even though I disagreed with his position, something every American knew, I thought he gave a good answer. He said, in effect, "You know my position on the death penalty, and I will not compromise out of personal vendetta." If Americans wanted Democratic leadership after Reagan, that issue alone should not dissuade them.

    • @munimathbypeterfelton6251
      @munimathbypeterfelton6251 Год назад +1

      I agree with you. But people can become sheep and shallow-minded, short-term thinkers overnight when one thing rubs them the wrong way. I.e. Dukakis’s answer to the death penalty question. I was only four years old in 1988; but had I been old enough to vote at the time I wouldn’t have let Dukakis’s response change my mind about him either.

    • @broadstreet21
      @broadstreet21 Год назад

      @munimathbypeterfelton6251 True. I was two years old at the time, but had I been voting age, his response wouldn't have changed my mind - other than make me respect him a little more for his integrity.
      I would have voted Bush, thoigh, out of desire for a third term of Reagan (electing his VP was the closest one could get). Reagan had his highs and lows during his tenure, but in the long run, I think he did well to get the economy rolling again, set the stage fir ending the cold war, and exposed sound moral values.

    • @UKSportsFan
      @UKSportsFan 7 лет назад +2

      MVQlech_67...actually, the GOP controlled House and Senate counter-balancing Clinton is what allowed us to have a prosperous economy throughout most of the 90's. It was Clinton's policies, however, which sowed the seeds of the Great Recession by helping to inflate the housing bubble, which was a key part of the financial debacle of 2007. The seeds of the housing crisis were sown with President Clinton’s push to increase home ownership by 8 million people. Clinton sought to achieve this goal by forcing the two federally-backed mortgage giants - Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac - to increase from 30% to 42% of the share of mortgages they sponsored from low- and moderate-income borrowers. Eventually, Clinton raised this to 50%. Clinton's secretary of housing and urban development, Andrew Cuomo, accelerated easy-housing policies and inflated the housing bubble, setting the stage for its collapse by forcing banks to loan to people who couldn't afford to pay their mortgages.

      John Waddon Bush Sr would have been re-elected if it wasn't for Ross Perot running. He screwed up by signing the tax increase bill but Congress kept pushing him to sign it. He still was a pretty good president and probably the best one who wasn't re-elected in over a century. Once he left office, the whole economic boom started which resulted from Reagan's policies.

      @@nick56677 Hi there Sir! What do you mean by NeoCon. I'll agree with you if it means Neo Conservatism even if the concept of Neo Conservatism is recent. It's New.

      @@nick56677 I was very happy that from him. His son Pr Bush 43 did use the same concept as well. It's relevant to enrich the Current Conservative Era with this new concept that provides evidence of how much the liberals don't have the monopoly of hearts and how much the Conservatives are determined to build AN INCLUSIVE AMERICA THROUGHOUT SUPPLY AGENDA.

      UKSportsFan I wouldnt say his super honest as its not commen thing for the presidency but his the better bush for a reason. When he went to war he did it for reason and evidence that actually existed. He also did with out the need to step on civil libritys like right to privacy. As much as you disagree with someone always understand the level in which you disagree, then you dont end up mixing hitler with with some African dictator. Hope the analogy makes sense.
