      I don't think it was this song he did on his back. What's Going On is too complicated to do, on one's back. Flying High in the Friendly Skies is my pick, for the on his back song.

    Listen to this and understand why Marvin would record with no one but James Jamerson. No mystery.

    • @btx109
      @btx109 7 лет назад +5

      Miguel Camacho Jamerson was probably his favorite bassist but Marvin recorded with several other greats, including Bob Babbitt, Michael Henderson and Wilton Felder.

    • @miguelcamacho2869
      @miguelcamacho2869 7 лет назад +10

      No argument regarding his entire recording career. For this track in particular he declined to record other bassists even if James Jamerson was unavailable or too drunk to be reliable, according to the versions available.

    • @miguelcamacho2869
      @miguelcamacho2869 7 лет назад +3

      I feel I already replied to this comment. I meant that for this particular song the version I read is Marvin would not record it with any other player, even if Jamerson was totally smashed on alcohol and could hardly play at all; so they waited and did the required to ensure Jamerson could record this particular track. Legend has it he was so drunk he had to record it lying down on his back.

      Unfortunately Fams doesn’t get the recognition that he deserves. He is a great bass player but on my list he is ranked 15th. It really is a shame he isn’t respected as a great bassist by more people. But the true lovers of music (like us) know who he is and know he is great one.

    This is making me cry...beautiful. In 'Standing In The Shadows Of Motown", Jack Ashford talks about how Marvin had gone to get James at a club, and wasn't in the best condition to play....but once they were back in the Snake Pit, James recorded this Bass track laying on his back in the studio floor...and from Jack's account, no one believed it...but James did it. Pure genius...

    The fluid spontaneity, while driving an intense rhythmic flow, IS beyond playing an instrument. Being a bass player isn't about playing a bass and he epitomizes the art of crafting a bass line full of life, where you could sit down and study the logic and intent of every note recorded here but what's going on in his head during the take is language in the moment. This track will always be a master class beyond just playing a bass instrument. So much about playing music is on display in this beautiful recording, through this beautiful song.
