  • In conversation with award-winning craftsman John Mee.
John's family have lived in Cromford for six generations and his stick and staff making skills were handed down from father to son.
Picking up from the first video, here John explains how to choose the perfect walking or hiking staff. Length, weight, type of wood and style. Every stick is unique, and filled with the heritage of the Peak District National Park.
His work has been sought after by celebrities, but he sells only locally and maintains its handmade character. Finding a stick can mean walking miles, and once cut can take years to dry and be prepared to work on.
Like the tools he works with, John is a vintage craftsman, there aren't many left: I'm delighted to share his story with you.

Good to see John again, out in the sunshine this time. I especially love the honey-coloured hazel staff, shaped like a golf club and the honeysuckle twiners. John has carved himself a niche in our hearts❤👏

@@brendanjones2734thanks Brendan, you’ve caught the man perfectly, as he would say “I make working sticks, built to last and not for show” 😊
