Falling into a black hole (Realistic Ultra HD 360 VR movie) [4K]

- Update: check out my latest video - the most realistic simulated movie to-date of the supermassive black hole in the centre of our own Milky Way galaxy! [ • What Does the Milky Wa... ]
On smartphones this video is best viewed using the youtube app. Try google cardboard on your smartphone with a VR headset for the most immersive experience (smartphone with gyro sensor required). For desktop computers try viewing in Google Chrome browser or Firefox.
If you're in a hurry, jump forward to 2:00 where it gets really interesting.
Science note: this is a real physics calculation (not simulation or rendering) I did of what we would actually see if we were unfortunate enough to fall into a black hole, from far away all the way up to the event horizon! Each frame is rendered at a resolution of 8K and the video plays at 60fps. Calculations are performed using my own general relativistic ray tracing and radiative transfer computer code, 'BHOSS' (Younsi et al. 2017), i.e., solving the equations of motion of light/photons (null geodesics) for a given spacetime, in this case a spinning black hole (Kerr).
For now there are no Doppler or gravitational redshifting effects for the sake of clarity. I've omitted an accretion disk and proper radiative transport of light as it distracts from the gravitational lensing of the starlight and the black hole's shadow. Including an accretion disk or even a torus calculated from a proper general relativistic magnetohydrodynamical computer simulation of gas falling onto a black hole is also possible and I may do this in the future.
In this movie the black hole is spinning rapidly (almost at the maximum possible rate). The starfield is taken from real observational data. The movie starts one thousand gravitational radii away from the black hole and ends at the event horizon, where eventually all light focuses into a single point and vanishes. Try looking around as you approach, or you'll miss it!
I made this VR movie to promote the "Einstein Inside" exhibition touring Germany, where it was first shown in November and December at the Goethe University of Frankfurt. Copyright: Ziri Younsi.

Wow, 10M views!!! ☺I never expected this when publishing this video in 2016. Thank you so much for all of your support and fantastic comments, and please keep them coming!
I'm really inspired to make a new VR movie now, with a lot more physics included this time: feel free to send your suggestions!

No problem
Pretty lame, I´d even say fake and gay
Redo this with more realistic physics! Being tossed around a bit at event horizon. The universe blueshifting behind you and redshifting in front of you after event horizon. Maybe space around you is also tending towards the singularities gravity.
Your video here is my fav, my second fav is not nearly as realistic but has all these qualities, combined would be perfect! Thankyou for this vid👌

Comment stealer 🤡
I was terrified but also amazed at the part were it reached the event horizon
Oh is that what the event horizon is? I thought it was the point where the distance is so great between a certain thing such as a star or galaxy from us that it no longer becomes visible due to like.. light not being able to go the distance? Or something... idk I'm dumb, I only heard this term in crash course astronomy and it was regarding the expansion of the universe and the speed of light, among other things towards the end of the series
Super interesting either way :o
I might be thinking of another term or something tho... it had something to do with the word "horizon" and or the fact that if universal expansion continues and galaxies keep moving away from us and each other, we would apparently not be able to see anything in the night sky anymore... in the faaaaaar future or something
...yea I'm probably wrong lol
xGSUltiSpiritx I did a lot of research on this in sixth grade for a report. The event horizon is basically where the black hole starts to pull you in faster. Once you pass it you will be "spaghettified" as they call it, which means the black hole will stretch you head, arms, legs, and pretty much everything until you become an atom.
Its fake
Jesus this comment thread is cancer

At one moment, you just realize that you've gone too close to it and there is no power to help you escape, you can scream, but nobody will hear you. Shit, that was scary...
The beginning of the video is too close to it. 3 years light away from it is too close to it. That gravity is fucking bonkers
Chance Carlson no stop talking about something you don't know. The attraction of a black hole is very high yes but the range of this attraction is pretty short actually
@@chancecarlson2023do you know how much is each year light?if you fall into a black hole with the speed of light it takes 3 years for you to reach the event horizon. Not a few minute

That’s a you problem, I found it relaxing.
Thankyou camera man for sacrificing yourself in black, If you haven't done this we never to get to see this mysterious thing.
Apart from being ripped into infinite pieces, the scariest thing about falling into a black hole is the extreme time dialation. Because the time dialation is that extreme, by the time you have fallen into the black hole, almost all stars, if not all stars will have died and all that would be left of the universe is black holes. Life on earth would last less than the time it takes to blink for you, and if you could look around, you would see the universe fall into darkness as everything in it dies.
You are happy when you know camera man never dies
Keep staring at the centre and it was damn scary.

Um the stars stood still once you’re close enough to a black whole time moves extremely slower and you would see the whole universe die as you went in.......
Underrated comment. Yes you would probably see the heat death of the universe as you fall in. Also the colors would be much brighter as per blueshift effect
Yes exactly. When you’re near a black hole the laws of physics don’t really apply.
@@att1tude__ they do apply. With greater Gravity and speed time moves slower. Wich happens near a black hole. But *in* a black hole laws of physics don't apply
There's a lot of good theory here. And correct theory at that. Black holes are fascinating amd make for a pretty good conversation. But most of the things we know about black holes are just theories at best. I mean, yes, there are a lot of things that we can clearly assume about black holes, but nothing is for sure. Like, the time thing; being able to see everything that's ever gone into the black hole and everything that ever will go in to the black hole salmotaniously at the event horizon would make logical sense based off of current science. But for now, it's all theory. But still, debating this stuff is super fun, no doubt
@A Hill we can't say an beca all the knowledge we have are theories. Black holes could be way to a parallel universe. Who knows. Space is a mystery

And now my legs are numb from anxiety thank you
It’s so cool how a black hole can just *bend* space and time. It literally *BENDS* time and space. The universe is juts a piece of fabric if you think about it
or a geliton
It fucks my mind up when I think about it...
An entire universe being warped by it, cant wrap my head around it. We live inside that space right, and it isnt a flat plane which is how I visualise the fabric to be warped that way....
How the hell..
not even if you think about it, that's a known thing. space and time bends around gravity. like a putting a weight on a blanket and having it sink
For all we know we could be a universe that lasted a plank time inside a singularity of a blackhole of another universe, and tume passes so slow for us due to our pathetic size, for us the universe begun more than 10 billion years ago....
Yes but a fabric made of what? And in what does it exist, exactly? If it bends, then _in relation to what_ does it bend?
How do we even know it’s bent if we have no reference?

Thank you for this, that was wild! I'm low-key obsessed with black holes, and I have always wondered what it'd be like, besides painful and slightly horrifying, to fall into one. I just wish that we could know exactly what happens inside of the black hole...
"Your body would be stretched apart. The most common black holes are called “stellar”. They can stretch to about 9 miles (15 km) across and be as heavy as 20 suns. If you happened to be pulled towards a stellar black hole, you'd be completely torn apart before you even reach the event horizon."
FUCK THAT, FUCK SPACE.
Now the video makes more sense, where the POV of the camera sort of "stretched" at the end there.
@@ralek592 A small black hole would be a mercy, it'd be a quick death and you wouldn't have much time to worry about it
Falling into a giant black hole, that's just torture. there's theories that you could survive for a while past the event horizon of a big enough black hole, meaning you'd not only see death approaching but then be plunged into complete blackness just waiting to be ripped apart
EDIT: Either one is horrifying however, fuck space indeed xD
Actually it just has 500000 Gs of gravity
The video is not exactly realistic. It only shows the space-warping around the black hole, but space is connected with time. Its spacetime which is warped, and not only space. That means: the more you fall into the black whole, the more the universe around you is speeding up in time... and i mean: really speeding up: you will see how stars are born and die in a blink of an eye,.. you will see how galaxys rotate and collide in amazing speeds. You also see how the color of galaxys change (not only because of redshift, but also: because with time less and less hot blue stars are born, but more and more reddish stars). In the end, you see: that all galaxies die (because stars burn out) and go more and more faint... also you see that galaxies in the end expand and dissolve in space, due to the dark energy which gets higher and higher with time. In the end, the black hole makes you see how the universe itself dies. The death of the universe, and the death of your existence and anything which could pinpoint to your existence becomes the same moment.

Don't woosh me but you can't really fall into black holes....... Black holes aren't holes they're just a bunch of matter tight into a small space. The gravitational pull tha black hole have is twice or more than the sun. That's why it's black because even light can't get out of it. Steven hawking theorize that if you fall into a black hole, chances are, you might see yourself in an alternate dimention. So, for all those isekai anima watchers, your dream (piano) has come true.
Raja Susana umayma If it’s a supermassive black hole, then yeah, physics basically breaks down inside it. The laws don’t apply anymore. You’re able to get past the event horizon without dying because the gravity is weaker and more spread out. In a smaller black hole your feet are being pulled toward the center with more force than your head, so you’d be stretched out like spaghetti.
Tldr: Big black hole = probably isekai, small black hole = spaghetti.
2 comments above me have to much science and fancy words in it T~T
@@CosmosCat lmao small black hole spaghetti
I watched this with my VR headset I was looking at the stars and I turned around about two minutes in. That was the loudest “holy shit” of my life
DUDE I’m dead fucking serious, I did the exact same thing. I was looking at the stars and wondering where the black hole was, and then I turned around and I actually said “oh shit”
What does "Holy shit" means?
@@cherrybloom3 If you don't have a VR headset, you can get a rather lame in comparison effect by using the little arrow circle top left of video to change your view to "falling ass first" into the black hole...and yeah...holy shit.
@@cherrybloom3 it means “woah”
@@shnugglebugs5524 ok
The fact that you're going so slow towards a black hole waiting to be sucked up is just scary.
Me: why is it so shaky?
Also me: doesn’t realize it’s because of me
Same with me
@@r.i.pgenos4497 tell me whats in the back side of a black hole
@@christophermora1625 ELON MUSK IS INSIDE
@@christophermora1625 it's a sphere so your question doesn't make sense.
Liam yeah it does, there are so many theories on what is inside a black hole, some suggest it teleports you, like a worm hole, or there is some really weird dimension you enter, so it makes perfect since, I don’t think you understand
If a black hole really works that way, then what is happening on the video becomes creepy. A chill begins to pass through my body, the stronger it absorbs, the stronger the cold. God, what a huge this monster that absorbs everything in its path.
