  • The Nikon D1x has been a very fun and interesting camera to use in the past year that I have the camera for. Sure it does have some shortcomings as well as flaws and limitations... However, you can always learn to overcome and/or workaround and get really good results with it. In this video
I will share my honest thoughts with you all in case it might help you out. I hope that you can enjoy it as well as gain something from the video! :-)

I've been using one with an upgraded buffer since 2004 then with a DIY lithium battery mod in 2010 until it refused to operate anymore in 2015 and moved on to other later Nikon models and just like you including Canon 1D series and then moving on to their respective later models with cmos sensors. Somehow i missed the colour out of CCD. Early 2023 managed to get hold of one. I agree with you the colour science out of CCD is unique. Can get 10mp out of the sensor. CF card capped at 2gb but there are user reported using 4gb without any issue.

great video David ! I recently purchased a D1X and love it, but I don't get similar pictures tones with mine compared to your shots. Did your photos in this video were jpgs straight out of the camera or JPG/RAW edited with some color correction ?

Having both the D1H and D1X. I tend to use my D1H much more. It has better iso performance and to me seems to have more organic images despite being the same sensor just tweaked. Although it could be a placebo. I have shot my D1H at iso 800 and had some good results. The Watson batteries are very good for these generation of cameras. Happy Shooting.

Thank you for your nice video, which I complete agree! I love this type of historical relic, and have collected quite a few from Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Olympus and Kodak! One real criticism of all cameras from this era is the quality of the batteries! Thank you for your work!

Very nice. I'm not sure why I did this, but I have in my hands now a Nikon D1X _and_ a Canon 1D. Both fortunately came with somewhat usable batteries and chargers and seem to work great. I'm looking forward to getting outside (pretty wet and cloudy right now) and seeing how they do but initial test shops are promising! The Canon feels a lot better in my hands, but I've been using them since the film days, so it feels more natural. I do like the CCD look, and have a D200 also.
It's amazing what you can get out of a _good_ 4-6MP camera. My first digital camera was 3.2MP and I _cursed_ its lack of resolution and sharpness. No such problems with either of these. They're not going to replace my Fuji GFX, but they're fun!

i have a question, how does d1x handle compared to lets say d200. i want to make a downgrade from my d200 to d1x. what do you think, does the d1x sensor give better colors or image quality considering the fact of them both having 10mp sensors.

Isn't it great nobody wants the old pro nikons with the megapixel wars. I found my d1x on Craigslist with the original box and manual. Also came with a flash, manual, camera bag and two older manual metal nikon zoom lenses for $250. The camera takes great pictures with the flash. I think this was the camera that ended the F5 film cameras for newspaper reporting. I remember taking a digital photo seminar with a pro photographer who was making a fortune with this digital camera and a digital photo printer. He mainly did corporate CEO shots and portraits of indi 500 drivers with fans. With the digital camera, strobes and a laptop and he could get the CEO to approve the photo he liked on the spot and there was no need to come back later. At the indi500 races he would also bring his large format printer so he could get the driver to sign the prints. It was a 50/50 deal with the driver at $250 a pop. He had a long line of fans and shot them quickly with the drivers and printed later. With film prices so high these older cameras are great for students to learn on.
