UPDATE: Turkish Airlines Didn't Accept Our Bikes (even if we had booked and confirmed the size)

- As we recently announced, we had a flight to Kenya on January 6th. We had booked our tickets and bicycles back in November, and confirmed the size of our bike boxes again on January 1st with Turkish Airlines. They confirmed we would be able to take them, but at the gate Turkish Airlines informed us that the boxes would not fit on the plane. We are of course not going to travel without our bicycles. Really disappointing, since we had done everything we could to avoid this exact situation.
The plan was to fly to Nairobi, Kenya to continue our bicycle tour around the world cycling south to South Africa, and then north again to visit Namibia and Angola. 🌍
We will decide our next move within a few days and announce our plans on Instagram:

✔️ See you in our next video!
You guys look rested, refreshed and refined.
The airlines people are a confused lot nowadays. They need to go for special courses on crisis and disaster management. When the S hits the fan it really hits hard.
Never give up guy's, Good luck.
Happy New Year! Much love and prayers from us to you. Please stay safe.Hope they take care of your tickets and bikes! ❤🙏🚴♂️
Happy Christmasfeeling and happy new year for you both! And despite all the problems a good mood and loads of luck.
Glad to see you both well and rested like many have mentioned in the comments. I am sorry for your troubles with the airline but I appreciate the information regarding your bicycle transportation issues as I will never give my money to this airline. Hope everything works out for the best and your equipment gets up to par and Peyman gets some really good shoes. Cheers.
You look great both of you. I'm glad you have new parts for your bicycles. Don't forget to get new shoes for Peyman.
Can't wait for your next videos.
Best of luck 🤞
I admire your positive attitude despite your troubles. I wish you all the best.
How frustrating! So sorry to hear about the situation and your financial losses due to the airline. I am really surprised that the COVID test is so expensive there 😣 Hope that you are able to get back on the road soon! ❤
so sorry to hear that you encountered so much trouble. Flying with bicycles is extremely stressful and I really feel with you. Hope you figure out something even better in order to continue your amazing trip!
That’s a bummer. At least you’re home and can tour Finland 🇫🇮 on the bikes 🚴🏽 as a good test run. Thanks for taking the time updating us 👍🏼.
Nice to see you again guys, we are waiting to your new adventure 🤗
I wish you guys lots of luck! As someone from Turkey, i felt bad that Turkish Airlines didn't accept your bike :( One time they didn't accept my guitar
I don’t think is about airlines Turkey is about airport regulation and stuff working there which means Finland
@@zouagomar6199 They say in the video that they have passed the security and the check in part which is the part that they accept the luggages. People there might be from finland but there is always a person who has a management status in turkish airlines waiting at the gate and those are the people who didn't allow the bike because they say they only told them about the bikes at the very (at the gate). So that's why I think it is the problem of Turkish Airlines not the airport regulation people
You both look so refreshed and rested! :-) Fingers crossed!
I am happy that you are home ,
You people are amazing ,get going achieve what you wish,my blessings
Sorry about the airline inconvenience , I know how frustrating that can be. I still admire your conviction to your purpose. I will keep watching your videos. Good luck
Sorry to hear that, im been looking forward for you guys to get on yhe road again. I hope it all work out soon. Good luck.
In 2013, we booked flights with a European airlines to fly us from Washington D.C. to Madrid. We were told by the booking agent and it showed on our print out that we were to pay $50 per bicycle. Seems fair right! Well... we arrived with bikes packed in boxes like you, ready to fly to Madrid and continue our world bike tour only to be told at check-in, "That will be $200 per bike and since that is your second piece of luggage, another $60 per please!" Bam, just like that, $520!! We tried unsuccessfully showing them where it said $50 per based on the who we booked with, but they said we have the longest leg of the flight and that we had to to pay their price. Then we tried arguing they were already charging us an additional $200 per bike, why then the additional $60 each. The agent said, it's your second piece of luggage. So what about the $200 per bike? Anyway.... long story short, they have you by the short hairs and what are you going to do when you're standing there packed, excited, and ready to fly!! Cheers from Florida and safe travels! ~Ron and Petra
I'm a frequent traveller. What size is allowed in a plane or for an airline do not means automatically it is the good size for that airport. some sizes will not go through the inspection, or through the automated chain..... Not all airport are equipped equal. Unfortunately one only face this surprises when at airport.
Always pack compact if you are traveling internationally from small airport or go to the big one.
Good to see you folks clean and relaxed this time for a change 😂. Good luck with your journey.
Fell so sorry for u guys. Wish u luck and health. I know only at the end for what the beginning was for. U are adorable people.
Oh! You guys left the Gambia already? I thought you were stuck there. It’s good you went back home. Been following your videos. 😁
Everything will be alright :) thank you so much for your travel stories.. It really helps :)
Hi guys saw the great stuff you're doing, big kudos! and sorry about the airline mess that's derailed you from getting to Kenya. My wife and I are a Kenyan cycling couple and we warmly welcome you to our beautiful country. Please feel free to ask us about anything regarding the country or cycling around it.
Good luck whatever you decide to do and go. Take care and all the best to your dream and travel.
Happy new year you two. Hope it all works out xxx
Best of luck guys! Keep safe!
What about the Cat? Plants? Everything what you guys built there?
I wish you guys good luck. I hope everything is going to be the way you guys wish.. ❤️
Agreed, it's cruel to any pets to be kept and then be discarded, particularly in a place like that, where there is a large impoverished population, those ducks and hens, will end up in that nightmare they call a market I don't have any, for the reason, as soon as this covid is under control I'm on the road again, animals develop feelings and love, must be terrible for that little cat, sociopath's.
Support life wherever you are, without attachments.
People saw hiw a couple lived there and created a living in a short time. That's setting a great example. Cats in particular, semi wild, will be better off kept in their own environment. They find a lot of big insects, reptiles, smalll birds, mice, rats to eat and left overs from surrounding people. Lots of fish is eaten there. No worries.
@@krewetkaaaa Yeah, I bet you felt the same way when your momma left you at the train station ( just using that as a scenario)When I left Thailand I had my two cats "put down" as opposed to the nightmare of starving, acquiring " Mange" and other cat diseases, I thought it was the most humane way to approach it and there isn't any guarantee that those animals will be treated humanely, so my view that if you can't guarantee it, don't have any.
@@livinonmybike3424 so your belief is that ending someones life (out of a selfish rasons for that matter) is a better alternative than even giving a chance?
@@livinonmybike3424 that's a terrible excuse to put down a healthy animal, just because you feel what MAY happen, why not put them up for adoption ? you are just a lazy, poor excuse of a human being
Its sad that both of you were unable to continue your journey but wishing you the best and take care and stay safe.👍👍
awaiting the next video...about time already!!😀
Hope all goes well.
Love your channel and cant wait to see the new Silkroad 2 bikes in action. Always stay safe guys.
Hey ..where are you guys.
Just stay safe, it’s the most important thing right now. 🙏
Hey guys, been following for a while.. We travel in a van and hoping to make it from Europe to Australia when the world allows us to do so.. For now, all us travellers need to be patient and wait, really think you should stay in Finland for a while.. It sucks, but it’s the right thing to do! Your videos are great, very inspiring.. Thanks for sharing 🚐👫🦮🐕🦺
Aha, you follow them too! I also follow On her bike, Trent & Allie, Tread the globe, Eva zu Beck, and Bald and bankrupt , plus a few other travellers. I hear the weather in Spain isn't good, and it's heading east to us.
Glad you were able to get home!
what a story! Stay safe you guys. Covid won't last forever. It will be much easier to travel in a year or two. If you are going for the planned 10 years, I might see you sometime. Take care and thanks so much for your great videos
Oh my God! I'm so sorry for the struggle! It sounds like a nightmare!
Wow you guys look so different. But i think it must be very nice to be home in Finland after such a long time, to see your family and friends. Enjoy it and have a good trip when you go back to Africa.
You both are great warriors.... So hope for the best
Sorry to hear that guys I really hope you get over this quick and back to your adventure soon. Sucks
This is why anytime someone gives you important info make an attempt to get second and\or third confirmation\opinion. I am not assuming you did not.
I have shipped a bicycle internationally before, the shipping box in the video is gigantic.
Airlines have maximum dimensions and weights in total, how you arrive at them is up to you.
I used a relatively inexpensive custom, soft side vinyl-fabric-backed bag with components removed and plastic wrapped to reduce size. Worked well. For greater protection, you can add some flat cardboard shields.
Thanks for the tips, we have confirmed the exact size of these boxes with Turkish Airlines, not once actually 5 times. 3 times when we were booking the flight from Gambia we called them and two time from Finland just to be sure so they can take the boxes. What else we could do? In their website there is no dimensions mentioned for bicycle and they asked us to call them and book the bikes and confirm the size of the boxes. 😊
@@NomadsTrails The airlines I have dealt with do not distinguish between container sizes depending on the contents. As I wrote, they have a max. linear limit that you then divide into whatever 3 dimensions work for you.
By removing, wheels, seats, bars and packing ingeniously together to offer the smallest footprint it can be done (IME) added factor that personal sporting goods are allowed. There are international rules.
I have no experience with Turkish airlines.
best of luck
@@Mark-gg6iy thanks for the explanation 😊, as a passenger it is not my job to go and check the international rules for what airplanes can carry and what is the dimension of tge luggage. I ask this information from the airline and it is their job to provide me the correct information. They should know what size of luggage and what they can accept and carry. If they give me a wrong size, they should take the responsiblity. I had ever had issues with taking a bike on the airplane before. I always contacted the airplane and go with their guidelines. Also indeed different airlines have different rules and dimensions for bicycles. In the Helsinki airport stuff told us now we have less passengers so we fly with smaller airplane so our cargo space is limited. The stuff who book the extra luggage need to be informed about these and they need to give me a correct size and information. It is mot my work to find out about all these. These are all apart of the service i buy from the airline when u buy my ticket. I don't really see what i could do better in this case beside asking the airline for the correct information. Any way, thanks for the info 😊
Hello Paymen & Matilda, my name is JAY I’m from California, USA. I watched few of your videos and I enjoyed them all. I want to wish you all the luck to reach your goal. If you ever decided to cycle in California, you’re welcome to stay in my house, Room & Board. I live about two hours south of Los Angeles. Please stay safe.
Hello guys how are you both where you guys ..hope where ever you are please be safe and keep us informed ...missing you both
Great channel my wife and I love your travel videos! Wishing you guys all the best in your travels!
This happened to me on a return home from a tour. I had a layover of a few hours (luckily) at an airport and had to check out and check in my bicycle box. On checking in, I was told the box was too big and a little heavy So I had to open , remove contents, cut down some of the box and reseal it. Twice. Maybe they were being jerks to me. But I wonder now with the airlines hurting for fares and places hurting for tourism if this would happen. Your box was about the same size, maybe smaller than one I bought in Schiphol airport (Very bicycle friendly airport). I wonder if possibly someone may have been playing chess and concerned that you might catch covid and spread it as you went. Anyways, glad that you are at least safe in a home for the time being. ..and yes, the wanderlust is hitting me very hard.
Keep your positive attitude 👍 it’s infectious
Following you guys and what a inspirational journey!!!! Hopefully soon I will be on the road as well following your path... 😍🤙😎
Hey Nomads, we love your vlog ❤️❤️❤️
Never give up, much love 🥰
Matilda looks fresh as usual...Peynam you look renewed buddy...great to see you guys again..
what happen to your cat? Your Chickens , Ducks and ur lovely garden?
I am glad you are back home and healthy. It is a bad situation with Covid. Even if it is hard for everyone, better stay at home until this pandemic is over. Live will go on.
Happy New year guys ,best not travel just now , it would probably mean getting stuck in some other place, and no flight out perhaps, be safe travel in your own country its a bit tricky around the world, you mite just and I would say are perhaps likely to get stuck at every border, its just how it is but your safety is the important thing my advice stay put love as always from the Dave man always welcome at mine as soon as life moves forward again.
really sorry for that, the best thing is to send the link of this video to the airline manager so that he can understand how many people see their mess and bad behavour
Just found your videos today and hours of your journey from Morocco to Gambia. Awesome.
All the best and see you soon..x
You guys didnt upload any video from 2 months and I just thought of you both and searched for your video hoping to watch it.

It is weird to see you in a comfortable house! Lol! Sorry for your misadventure with the bikes
I hate RUclips because I'm watching this videos religiously in the order of the trip and I just watched the video in Spain, but this new video is a spoiler and I hate that, but I love your trip, and please keep going. Greetings from Colombia and welcome here, because my humble home is yours too.
Much love to both of you.
Upload Everday soo interest to watch nomads trails..n stay safe.
Good energy to you both.
I am not surprised. I flew from Taiwan to Izmir. Like talk with Turkish agents. Like they confirmed. They said that if I exceed the kl limits I will paid the extra fee. Like you mentioned, I was skeptical of the answer so I did put my bicycle as small as possible and only the bicycle in the box. Arrived at G~day there was a problem?! He suggested to pay an extra fee then after no problem. I do understand your situation very well. I wish you luck.
Hope a great reboot again
Wishing you very best and happy New year I am officially welcome you to kenya.
Happy New Year
Both looking radiant 😊. New bikes??

I'm really really sorry about your situation, but honestly, I'm not surprised about Turkish Airlines as a Turkish citizen 😥 You once encountered this situation, we constantly experience the same things 😄 Wish you best luck 👍

Welcome to Tanzania..I'm really looking forward to your trip to Tanzania..I stay in Tanzania..nd if God wish we can catch up..stay safe nd stay bless.
Gud luck guys.
You should contact Turkish Airlines directly in Istanbul, they usually have a very good service. Not sure what is happening in Africa but that is unacceptable, if you have the Emails confirming their approval, you are 100% in the right!
One door closes... another opens. Good luck.
Always love from Italy.
Stay safe both.
Hi My question is how many kilometres do you get out of your chain and cassette and which brands do you use? Thanks
i'm sure you make it!! go on.....all the best..
That kind of stuff happens to me all the time. I don't know why those CIVID Tests are so expensive though. But anyway, for me, after what is happening in OUR country here in the United States, seeing you fills me with joy. You share your difficulties with a smiles and your both as cute as a basket of kittens. So Thank You.
