For the past 10 years, the reality TV show Shark Tank has entertained and edified millions of viewers by dramatizing how entrepreneurs pitch venture capitalists. And none of the "sharks"-the investors who compete with each other to fund businesses they think will be successful-is more entertaining or edifying than Kevin O'Leary, whose signature insult to unsuccessful contestants-"You're Dead To Me"-has become a pop culture catchphrase.
But O'Leary isn't just a small-screen blowhard. Born and raised in Canada, the 65-year-old investor got rich by developing educational and family-oriented computer software in the 1980s and '90s and holding firm to a gospel of thrift, savings, and reinvestment that he's outlined in best-selling books such as Cold Hard Truth on Men, Women, and Money. Over the years, he's diversified his investments into vineyards, storage facilities, and more, and he's dabbled in politics, too, briefly considering a run in 2017 to head the Conservative Party in Canada. His brash nature earned him easy comparisons to Donald Trump but O'Leary, who lives in Boston, is openly free trade and pro-immigration. He's long been in favor of marijuana legalization and gay rights and opposed to military interventionism.
Nick Gillespie sat down with O'Leary at FreedomFest, the annual gathering of libertarians in Las Vegas. They talked about why Shark Tank is so popular, why Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is so bad, and whether "democratic socialism" is really a threat to the free market capitalism that O'Leary says makes us richer and happier. They also discussed why O'Leary thinks Donald Trump has been great for the economy despite a personal style so many, including O'Leary himself, find unappealing.
Interview by Nick Gillespie. Edited by Ian Keyser. Intro by Mark McDaniel.
When I first started watching Shark Tank, Kevin was my least favorite because I found him to be rude with no compassion. As the episodes and seasons passed, and I personally got involved in business and investing, he became my favorite. I realized he doesn't tell you what you want to hear, he tells you what you need to hear. He doesn't bullshit, he doesn't sugarcoat his message, he tells you how it is. This was a GREAT interview!
Wow. Mr. O'Leary speaks with clarity and cuts to the bone.
O'Leary is as big an ASSHOLE as Trump and Reason TV. Their "profit comes first" mentality gets in the way of HUMAN PROGRESS. But they can give a s*%t about long term human progress so long as they fill their fat little pudgy hands with short term monopoly money.
@@MyplayLists4Y2Y - Monopoly money is what the government thinks they play with, even though it's 100% real.
Trump and O'Leary know it's real and better used by people on the ground.
That's part of his charm on "Shark Tank" is the fact he isn't absolutely stone hearted, but he's not emotions first.
He says what he thinks and he's clear about who he is.
He loves a good story, but he'd rather have a great storyteller, because those make money.
Government takes, businessmen with any sense give.
@@wesleywildcat84 SAID: "Monopoly money is what the government thinks they play with, even though it's 100% real."
REPLY: I do hope you're not serious... the concept of money is obviously a social construct, it only has the value we give it, and said value can be taken away or assigned elsewhere (i.e. HUMAN PROGRESS) if society collectively decides to do so.
@@MyplayLists4Y2Y - Okay, yeah... no...
"Human Progress" has variable value based on its utility.
How value is assigned is money.
"It's a social construct," well let me say my magic words, and now I can buy a full blown Tesla for $20, Bill Gates is worth $5, and the man at the Apple store should give me a Mac for $2 and iPhoneX for $1.
Holy crap, I'm rich!
Reality... the market sets the values and human progress is guided by the most practical and valuable in most cases.
Government is clueless, capitalism is the best way to move things forward.
Famously, Hong Kong was a broke as a joke rock, and now it's rockin' big time!
Collectivism builds collective laziness, unless investment is required.
To each according to their investment, they shall receive.
If you don't like how you're valued, increase your value or do something else.
It's simple.
What is human progress?
Whatever anyone is willing to pay for.
20:25 "the older you get, the more realistic you become"

Yea it did he is realistically trying to destroy this country and knows exactly how to do it.

@mmzen Found the pinko!
@mmzen Under Sanders you still pay for it. You pay for it through taxes, lots of taxes. If we had truly free-market healthcare, competition would drive prices down, making healthcare more affordable.
@mmzen It's funny you put it that way . . . because that's how socialism ends . . .

How did you come to that conclusion??
Trump has repeatedly said News is the enemy of the state and not even holding press conferences regularly. What would you call that?
@@ShawNshawN Not true, he called the fake news media the enemy of the people, which is true. Remember the Russian collusion hoax? Who promoted that intentionally destructive story every single day for 2.5 years, and the list goes on and on.
The mainstream media isn't free speech, it's called left wing propaganda. Trump is absolutely right. Enemy of the people. That's sort of like like calling Joseph Goebbels an advocate of free speech.
Cloud Run it just doesn’t square well that he calls out only left wing news entertainment shows when Fox’s is just as bad. Also, he lost a 1st amendment lawsuit: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knight_First_Amendment_Institute_v._Trump
@@golb0016 Come on man... It was a twitter issue. Every internet social media user understands that if you don't want people on your feed you block them. Now, being in government, he can't do that and the rules were rightly enforced. AOC was against it too but you don't really hear media reporting it as much because it doesn't fit their agenda. He isn't against free speech. He is just disgusted with the media constantly using hit pieces to attack him and then retracting later on (when it comes to sources). Most will watch the first video but not the "my bad" follow up. And even though he clearly fights back with his words he doesn't call for their outright removal or for them to be silenced, as they do to him.
Yes fox is just as bad and both sides are clearly too crazed right now to actually focus on more important topics but then again whoever said media was about truth. I believe we are at a point in time where what people focus on/follow has become bigger than ever before. Yet the attention span is shrinking as individuals who wish to make profit have to keep creating new media since consumption is in an all time high. I really feel like this is just the clickbait era we experienced at some point on youtube. It will eventually subside but at what cost? More division is occurring and it's not because of Trump per say, but because of choice. He is a roadblock to what some high political figures want and the tribalism mindset drags people who are moderate democrats further left or leaves them politically homeless. Lots of impressionable people are following the hate and have mob mentality.
TL;DR Twitter is not a public forum. Even though they love the benefits of looking like one in the eyes of the law.

My sister has always been left leaning until recently she said things more like a conservative. Why? She is finally making more money and hates it all going away in taxes. Something I realized years ago in my mid-20s.
Depends on the society you want to live in. Im much happier in an egalitarian society where wealth gaps arent insanely huge like the United States. Maybe some people like a hyper-competitive society where you can millions more than others and be taxed less. The fact of the matter is, without the worker the company and corporation cannot function. The worker is exploited in our (im hesitent to call it capitalism cause its more corporatism) capitalist system, and eventually the poor worker gets tired of being exploited and rebels, forms a union or engages in self-destructive behavior (increasing suicides and drinking problems in the US).

He’s presented/supported no legislation regarding libel laws.
I agree he should be called out for his statement (and he was, always is), but representing it him as anti-free speech is ridiculous.
@@dosmastrify If you say anything the democrats don't like you get called a racist. They want you censored too. I said point to the law he has passed. Not a fucking tweet. NEXT.
Trump calls anything he doesn't like "fake news". Facts don't matter to him -- or his cult-like followers. When you threaten reporters and call the free press "an enemy of the people", you are anti-free speech.
Good job on a neutral host... gag
ya this guy's brutal
😂
When I was younger I hated Kevin because I saw him as the biggest douche. 7 years later he’s my favorite because he’s the only true one
We need Kevin to run for PM. Finally someone SMART in government. Please!!!
Gillespie, who I've been watching for years, really disappointments me with some of assumptions about Trump.
Is the interviewer living in a fantasy world
I thought Kevin was great. A wise man!
Trump is definitely not racist and is not anti free trade. I also don't think anyone can be an isolationist, that would be like assuming that the rest of the world will just sing kumbaya and let America be to themselves but that isn't reality and never was and never will be. It's an ideological position just like socialism
I always love Mr. Wonderful! He is ! Blunt and to the point!
Regarding people under 40 viewing capitalism as negative and socialism as a positive; those people have yet to discover their relationship with money.
I would vote for him
@boson96 Trump is pro military, pro police, pro drug war, anti immigration, and pro tariffs, pro eminent domain, anti gun, etc.
@@matrixman8582 Holy cow. Trump is anti immigration? NOT. He's anti-Illegal immigration. Anti gun, WTF are you talking about? He's only pro tariff to force the hands of those countries that got trade deals that favor them and not the US. Pro Military, yep, Pro Police, what does that mean? Pro drug war, well then Congress needs to make pot legal in the US. The president does not make the laws.
@boson96 Strong military does not mean having bases in 100+ countries and fighting wars that have nothing to do with the US. The military is supposed to be for defense not offense.
If he's pro legal immigration then why is he imcreasing barriers to obtain work permits, green cards, and visas?
Criminal communists? Many US immigrants from 3rd world countries start their own business. And as long as they are not given citizenship, they can't vote or recieve welfare.
Tariffs are a tax on the American people. IP is illegitimate property.
The crisis is exaggerated. Less people are coming illegally than before and the majority come by plane/overstay their visa. Besides, The Constitution allows the govt to restrict naturalization, not immigration.
He recently banned bump stocks
I made the transition in my mid 20's just as O'Leary claims
Same here
I thought Reason was a libertarian channel. Sounds like a democratic interviewer
same thought. May be the channel is conservative but hate Trump
Yeah I thought the same. Where'd they get this retarded lunatic? Borrowing from CNN's staff?
you do know libertarian is not republican right? Trump is not libertarian, he's an authoritarian idiot
This could be one of the best segments on so many topics impacting and facing our country right now I was completely and totally captivated by just about every topic covered in this little segment. Kevin O'Leary it's truly a well rounded and sharp individual.
Kevin O’Leary likes Trump,
therefore he’s my favorite shark.
Kevin if you were wiser you would support max. Scheer is trudeau light
agree 100%. The man calls himself a feminist
The interviewer is too biased
Anyone with a functioning brain and some years of education would be biased against Trump.
yeah oh right Well it’s obvious your a liberal pussy who wants everything handed to you.
William Wright What a mature response.
Did he say President Trump is anti free speech?
Listening to Mr.Wonderful has confirmed my admiration for his brilliant mind! He is so very stable, informed and truly reads in-between the lines of life & politics. I hope more people will listen carefully to this video and will hear what I have heard without prejudice.
Trump isn't anti-immigration as you contrast O'Leary as "pro-immigration". You're better than that, Nick. Be Reason-able.
as much as i dislike trump. i don't disagree with the statement - 'he will get relected'
Great understanding of what is happening today and what happened yesterday!! Trump 2020!
Watching this now and hearing Kevin say The chance of Trump losing a second term is 0.. makes you wonder even more, wish more ppl would wake up
Trump is "anti free speech"?? Lol. I remember why I stopped paying attention to this guy.
Kevin O’Leary outside of Shark Tank is a complete mind twist! Dude is one of the most intelligent men on earth. Really wish he would run for Prime Minister in Canada 🇨🇦 and I don’t even live there hahaha
Interviewer, President Trump is not against free trade. Stop with the false info. The interviewers hated of Trump clearly shows. So tired of people like the interviewer trying to push the "orange man bad" narrative. Love Kevin's honesty and fairness to facts.
The PRIMARY REASON to start a business is to MAKE A PROFIT. How u do it is secondary.
This is not true. Starting a business for money will get you no where. It has to be about passion. Customers first. Employees second. Profits will follow if you have the first two down.
It's as natural as a human breathing. Even our non-profits are in it to make a profit (and then just divvy it out to everyone involved).
HUMAN LEADERSHIP and a business are two very different organizations. You cannot run both the same way and expect positive results on both, it's ludicrous. One is to look out for the wellbeing of people, nature and resources now and tomorrow, the other is to generate profits for a particular individual/group - and most have that approach of "at all costs" which easily translates into abusing people, nature and resources of today and tomorrow.
If you ever wondered what is what's wrong with today's civilization, it's the lack of vision to see the differences. There will be no world where "profits" mean anything unless you account the first part, wellbeing for the LIVING which is inclusive with nature and a FAIR use of resources outside financial interests.
@whyputaname2 I have two businesses they both require passion. When you own a business you work 24/7/365. It takes passion to keep you going. I guess your passion could be making money then you are good to go.
@@katiek.8808 you can put all the passion into yr biz you want, BUT if you aren't making a profit, you'll b out of biz eventually. Additionally, the goal is 2 MAXIMIZE Profits, by way of keeping prices low and staying in biz 4 the Long haul, or keeping prices high and ending up with many, many competitors at yr market.
I've watched maybe 5 minutes of Shark Tank... I have no interest in these type of shows. But... I like this guy! He gets it. He understands what capitalism has done to change the world. He's also spot on about leaders being entertainers. Both good and evil.
@Neil Graham Right on man. Being a business owner ain't my thing but...respect to you. People have no idea how much of a commitment it takes. Like...feminists who thin there should be more female CEOs. You have to spend every waking our working. It ain't for everyone or even every man. Best of luck and make your millions! Gotta love this Trump economy!
@@Sabotage_Labs Wow you managed to be both a misogynist and a moron. Congrats
An hour and a half presentation?!?! Reduced to SEVEN MINUTES? What we're seeing then is almost a FRAUD!
They should then at least make the unedited videos available to those who are looking to Shark Tank for insight and education
Brutally honest. Love this guy
