- I was surprised how reasonably you can get a good enough beginner open back banjo from Amazon. A friend of mine bought one like this and played it for years and it held it’s tune great and was a perfect starter banjo, with a great price. Check it out by clicking the link below. Good luck playing!

Here’s another real nice looking open back with a gig bag:

Thanks for supporting your local banjo players!
Banjo strings. I prefer D’Addario but there’s lots of others. These are medium:
D'Addario EJ55 Phosphor Bronze 5-String Banjo Strings, Medium, 10-23

I have also used Ernie Ball Earthwood 5-string Banjo 80/20 Bronze Loop End Frailing Set, .010 - .024

I do use Nylagut strings on a lot of my banjos too. They all make different sounds..
Aquila New Nylgut AQ-1B Banjo Medium Tension DBGDG-Set of 5 (4th Red Series String)

ON my short neck banjos it’s not unusual to use compensated bridges for third string better tuning.
Grover 5/8 Compensated Banjo Bridge (77)

You can get it in all sizes, or just sand one down from the bottom to fit.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that Amazon now offers a good selection of banjo heads too.

Gotta love that Old School "Rube Goldberg" Horizontal drilling machine!! Good Job! Gb
You know that thing did the trick... I'm going to be moving soon and trying to figure out what to do with all the banjo stuff.
No problem! I'm glad to see the drill press work for you. I love these old drill presses...
OH man! Please put a safety gard on that pully set up lol Great to watch you make the dale stick but really scary at the same time.Love your videos keep them coming.
Alright! Looks like the antique drill set-up worked well. I have 5 of those hand crank drill presses of various sizes. I use them all the time. Good job Mr. Peek....
Thank You! Yea, this thing's awesome!.. Thanks for your help.
Have you ever thought about having the drill stationary and moving the work piece on a track & trolley?
Seems like it'd be easier to keep everything in line
Yep. Nice piece of maple I had. Could be Canadian...
looked like it smoothed up when it got started drilling. Worked good hmm good deal.
You need a pce of good ol Canadian maple Curling broom handle but I see you used maple .
rpeek,I have a ramsey special with a dowel stick. why are they used and do i have to remove the neck to adjust the neck at the at heel ?.It does have a two way adjustable truss rod .What is the advantage of making them that way, if any.? and it something I need to worry about?
John Cook Dowel stick is used to hold the neck on the pot. Not sure if you can adjust yours with the truss rods or not. I'm not real familiar with them, since most of my old banjos don't have them.. Sorry I ain't more help..
OMG, putting his belly up against that moving pulley was about as much as I could take.
hahaha
@@rpeek It's your belly to do with what you like.
How would you remove a broken dowel that's glued into the neck?
Carefully... Slowly... It's easy to crack the heel.. That said, two things are possible. Depending on how it's broken I have ground the break and spliced them.
Another option is to saw them off even at the heel and drill them out. IF they're loose you can joggle them around sometimes and work them out but if they're not it's either splice or drill...
From wich century is this drill press?
It was originally a hand crank job, so you can figure it's pretty danged old.. Sure works good for somethin' like this..
What is the name of that tune in the background? I'd love to learn it.
I made that one up. Can't remember if I gave it a name or not.
+rpeek Very well played, sir.
Thank You..
Be careful not to get your shirt caught in that belt pulley, we want to have you around for awhile.
Dam fan wants some motor oil, noisey devil :-)
And the gears on the drill want some grease and sawdust lol :-)
Don't grow your beard any longer. The pulley might grab it.
That would be bad...
