  • Mail thieves are using unsecured or unaccounted for master keys that U.S. Postal Service employees use to access the mail, according to a USPS Inspector General audit obtained by 11 News Investigates. The audit found the master keys, known as arrow keys, were unaccounted for or unsecured across multiple post offices in Maryland in January. In 2020, USPS officials decided postal police officers should only protect USPS property. That means Baltimore -- one of the 20 cities where these officers used to protect the mail and the people who deliver it -- no longer has the officers patrolling the streets. In response to questions from 11 News Investigates, a U.S. Postal Inspection Service representative said thousands of arrow key locks have been replaced with electronic locks, with more to come.
