It was on the North Atlantic with very cold weather. Why should the passengers had the portholes opened? I could understand that in a hot summer, but not in freezing cold weather. Maybe a few were open for fresh air, but I cannot imagine many.
the number of open portholes on the wreck is not that much. Most of them are sill closed, specially on E- and F-Deck. There are several open portholes on D and C Deck, but some of them tha far behind, that water just reached it in the final minutes. The effect was not that much. YOu can see it in the NOAA-Videotapes from 2003.

Not all rooms have port holes. You have to book them special
