So what are we to do? Petty crime is 200 or less but the victim might need that long to feed their kids yet your suggesting they go free and can you not see how that would increase the rate of which it happens vastly?

The problem with our prison services in the UK as a whole is the daily mail government's we've had, who are more interested in locking people up in a system with a pathetic education and a none existent rehabilitation system just to make them look like they are fighting crime, instead of actually fighting the causes of crime instead.
I truly hope this new labour government can do better, but I won't be holding my breathe.

We should be teaching people how to be better in society and learn skills to use outside IN society to survive and be productive members; not institutionalizing people and having them learn how to be better criminals…that is not a benefit to society it’s a disservice to us and to society overall👍💯✌️

We must look at prison as limiting freedom and genuine rehabilitation, rather than punishment as revenge.
Obviously victims and the public must be protected, but also agree with Timpson that only the very most serious and violent crimes need long incarcerations.
The causes of crime are mostly poverty, family problems, mental health, undiagnosed neurodivergence etc.
Not dealing with this brings generational consequences for families, deprives individuals of a fair chance, and the economy of workers.
Everyone loses at rhe moment, and the prison system needs reforming.

      Yes it is.
In case you haven't realised we've had 14 years without the rehabilitative approach and look where that's gotten us. When society is crumbling, peoples situations worsen, their mental health starts to get worse and so they turn to drugs and/or crime to cope which leads to further bad decisions. I think its cruel that society sets people up to fail and is perfectly happy to just discard them and sweep them away for the benefit of a wealthy few.

Until our government deal with root problems in our society and mass illegal immigration which is swelling our population to the point all services like the NHS, housing, mental health support, drug rehabilitation is on its knees and waiting lists for homes or help is out of hand, then the jail issues won't get better they are just going to continue rising.
These issues aren't new either this has been left to get to this point with very little effort to stop it getting to this point.
What definitely doesn't help is this soft touch on prisons, like the cell you seen, tv, Xbox, xbox games collection bigger than most people will ever have, full of privileges and snacks list goes on. To a lot of guys in there it's a better place to be than outside prison and unfortunately that's a fact and why as soon as they get released they commit crime purposely get caught to get sent right back. Tackling these kinds of issues would be a good start to ease number's.
