- Two days after the Houthi drone strike on Tel Aviv, the Israelis took matters into their own hands, launching a massive airstrike against Yemen called “Operation Long Arm.” As reported by Open Source Intel on X, approximately 25 Israeli Air Force F-15s and F-35s accompanied by airborne tankers flew over 1,200 miles to strike 10 targets around the Al Hudaydah Port facility. The strike, which was executed in eight waves in daylight, was the longest ever attempted by the Israeli Air Force. It destroyed fuel depots and a power station, inflicted major damage on the port and created a power outage across the region.

Hi Ward, just wanted to provide some mission info that was released in Israeli Media:
The aircrafts participating were F-35A, F-16I, F-15D, B707 tankers, two types of Intelligence-gathering Gulfstreams. And most probably CH-53s on SAR alert.
The F-16I and F-15D are two-seaters used for electro optic guided weapons, where the WSO is flying the bomb.
It seems that the F-35s were mostly used for their sensors and neutralizing any SAM threats before the main strike force arrived.
Also worth mentioning- the GBU videos looks very much like it was GBU-15 video, telling by the cursors etc.
The Gulfstream G500 is called Nachshon- both variants were used here: Nachshon Eitam is CAEW (Conformal Airborne Early Warning), Nachshon Shavit is SEMA (Special Electronic Missions Aircraft).
CH-53s wouldn't work, don't have the range, even with aerial refueling it would be ridiculous, but, if you look just across the water to Djibouti the US has had dedicated SAR forces on alert for years.
@@apburner1 I wouldn't go as far as saying it "wouldn't work". I'd say that there probably were Israeli navy ships on standby on the more remote areas and CH53s on the closer areas. But FYI the IAF carried some crazy long-range missions with CH53s and with multiple air refueling from C130s tankers.
edit: there's actually a hair-raising story by a C-130 pilot, in which a CH53 was on a SF mission far away in hostile territory and had to be fueled right then and there, but the CH53 just lost an engine, so couldn't fly fast enough to match the C130's speed. They've decided to perform the air refueling while in a shallow dive and they were able to complete the refueling with the CH53 having less than 5 minutes of fuel remaining.
btw CH-53D has a range of 1000km- a little over halfway to Yemen.

Small update, the reason why the drone wasn't shot down it was identified as civilian drone probably used non military frequencies therefore it wasn't shot down.

Militaries will make use of whatever resources or channels they feel is necessary, so anything can be a military thing if it is used by a military in their operations. However, certain frequencies are used for military applications and are labelled and classified as such, many others are officially designated for civilian use. Take for example CB radio, it's an acronym for civilian band radio. A military would still happily use it if it suited their mission. Fighting forces will use non-military frequencies if they need to, as the Houthis apparently did. The blanket statement that there is no such thing as non-military frequencies is inaccurate at best, and misleading.
It was probably preprogrammed with GPS waypoints. It's technically infeasible to maintain two-way comms over the distances involved without a satellite relay.

Foreign policy is incredibly important especially in the Middle East. This current administrations bumbling and disastrous foreign policies have led to this mess. It’s dealing with Iran and freeing up hundreds of billions of dollars and the complete failure of the Russia Ukraine war are the reason for all of this.

Not all drones explode. Other uses include surveillance, launching missiles, and dropping small bombs. What understandable terminology would you suggest for this type of drone that is intentionally destroyed as part of its mission?

The Houthis say they flew the drone from Sudan through Libya, and over the Mediterranean to hit Israel. Iron dome probably wasn’t expecting to be attacked from Mediterranean Sea. That’s the blind spot.
Maybe that plus I guess it's not as effective against low flying drones and cruise missiles.
they certainly do expect attacks from the sea (Hezbollah has resources it can deploy via that route, and the IDF is very aware of it). I think what happened is that they were overly focused on different type of attacking force, and were just not expecting something that was flying in that speed range, since it was quite far from the tech usually used by both main enemies we are fighting right now.
at least, that's the rumor I heard around...
PS. I was like a couple of blocks away from that, maybe 10 at most, just left the beach going inland for one of the 24h (owl) bus routes back to where I live.

Negative, the iron dome detects based on heat signatures that allow it to calculate the trajectory of the object. Drones are low-heat emitters and also fly lower than the dome's capabilities.
