Haha, thank you, thanks for watching. The video was not intending to be a tutorial. But it's has gathered a fair few views and comments. Just messing on with a go pro and a motor. I do run a little RUclips channel which is where my editing comes from. Should of made the video shorter and to the point quicker. It's good your giving it a go your self. I believe in learning how your toys work. There are situations where you need to self repair. Glad it's wee'ing nicely. I do have a thermostat to fit at some point! Enjoy your engine, remember to wash it out in the bin in fresh water if it's been in the sea. Chris
Thanks for the video. I have the same motor I purchased from an advertisement. I haven't run mine yet. Just emptied the fuel. I think I'll go over the cooling, gear oil, thermostat, and carb now that we're off season. Cheers. Great video! Your son will be a seasoned mechanic when he's older.

That's great! They are good motors, we have a Briggs and Stratton grass cutter. Not started in 8 years, my grandads to. It started in 3 pulls! May share the video, ran sweet to! Do with an oil change in think.
Thanks a lot for the videos. I picked one of these up for free last week as a non-runner and after removing and cleaning the carb, new spark plug and fixing the petrol tap it idles nicely. I need full choke when running it on the back of our little RIB, so that's the next issue to solve. Once again thanks for the videos, helped me a lot.
Full choke when running, sounds like the carb is still not clean. I cleaned a carb last summer, kept getting filthy! Dirt in the fuel lines before the carb. I would clean the carb then it would soon get filthy again!

Tanks, your vid wasa great help in identifying the cooling issues on my identical motor. But on mine all it needed was a new impeller. Found all three missing impeller blades under the bottom plate. The last one hiding behind the drive shaft. So had to replace all the gaskets in the water pump as well, after that hunt :-D
Good video especially the young actor. Actually I'd like to have had detailed instruction, when reinstalling the impeller housing, regarding which way to turn the shaft so that the impeller blades bend the correct way. I think I might be able to figure this out.

Hello, thanks for watching my video. Yes you can get new ones. I generally see them on e bay when looking at thermostat's for them engines. They come as a kit. I used a gasket, comes in a tube. You apply it on the case or cover. Don't put to much on as you don't want it findings its way into the engine. When you apply it, allow it to dry over night. Don't be tempted to run the engine up. I found this and the water pushed the still wet gasket out! which resulted in a leak and having to reseal it. Hope that helps.
Hi, Thanks for the video. I have exactly the same issue, and I KNOW I properly flushed the motor with fresh water every time after running it in the sea. Irritating. Did get some water flow going after poking a stainless steel welding rod up the water supply tube and rinsing with a hosepipe. Replaced the impeller as well. Does not overheat at all anymore, but it has a aneamic little telltale dribble. Going to try and run it in saltaway for a bit and see. Such nice motors, but they want to be used regularly. I think time allows the salt to build up, even if you have rinsed it in fresh. I know the aluminium corrosion often looks a lot worse than it actually is, the density of aluminium oxide is very low and it "swells" a lot. Wonder if the same happens to salt deposits over time?
Hello, you taken the power head off and thermostat housing cover? I have heard buying white vinegar and running it up in like a bucket helps. Leaving it in there all weekend and starting it up every few hours quickly. Dissolves the salt build up. As you saw for me I also had grit and sand! Yes lovely engines. Brothers engine has needed some TLC, not used it for a few months because of Covid. Carb and fuel pump was all gunked up.
Have you still got this outboard? Just wondering how long ago you cleaned with the vinegar and if you have noticed any effects to the outboard since using it. I've got the exact same problem with the thermostat and water galleries all salted up
Hey there. After watching this I was confident I could replace my head gasket and thermostat and exhaust inner and outer gasket. I'm still waiting on the parts to come. I got it taken apart. Unfortunately I broke one of the 4 head cover bolts off. I've tried everything to get it out with no luck so far. If I'm unable to get it out, how bad would it be to leave one of the 4 bolts out, or what if I just fill jb weld in the hole? Thanks and God bless
Hiya...brilliant videos and really helpful. I have the same engine, same problems and I'm following your progress pretty much exactly the same. I noticed you sheared off no.1 bolt on the thermostat housing...I've just done the same with bolt no.3. The others are ok so do you think I could get away with it? I wouldn't know where to start removing the sheared off bit! Many thanks again.
Funny enough, I have just had that cover off. First time in a few years. Just replaced the thermostat. Also the impeller, gaskets and drive shaft seals. The cover did not leak for me having a snapped bolt. I did try quickly getting it out. I did put some oil in the threads when I put the bolts back in. Don't think it helps that the salt water gets to the bolts. I have recorded what I did, hopefully put it up in a few days.

Very informative,could not find much on RUclips for an engine that has purportedly sold in huge numbers.Strange to find the EU have banned all new sales of brand new 2 stroke outboard motors because of noise and pollution in favour of 4 strokes,did not know this had been the case for years.I cannot even find a repair manual do you know of any?
Just seen your comment 🤦♀️. Yeah, think it was the US driving the emissions? Like the jet ski world. They all went heavy 4 stroke. I did have a work shop manual with the engine. But it was pants as it covered from 4hp to 50hp. Was a mine field!
Well i`m bloody glad i watched this, i`ve had my Yamaha/mariner ticking over, stood in a large bucket of water, thinking to myself how well it was running, watching a steady flow of water and steam pouring from the power head out flow pipe. I`m not so sure it isn`t going to overheat now, so i guess a strip down of the cooling parts is called for.
@@penknifemonkey Shame i can`t post a photo, the amount of crud, salt and sand that i removed was unbelievable, the worst part was the removal of the 12 x M6 bolts for both parts of the water jacket, 5 of the buggers broke off, lucky for me, i have a Father with a decent workshop, and all 5 were removed. The outboard is having a respray now, before final assembly
@@martinsmith2600 funny you should say that. Mine also snapped as well.. salt is bloody horrible stuff in these engines.. I have heard of people at the end of the season running the engines up in vinegar for 24 hours. Starting them every now and then. Would of loved to have seen what you also found in your engine. You to could of made a RUclips video with your rebuild.

I've got one one these little motors to rebuild to keep me occupied during quarantine. i was hoping you could let me know what settings you have on the carb, in terms of air fuel needle valve settings, how many screw turns out from fully closed. Also what fuel to oil mix are you using as i cant find this info online and I am new to working on engines. i am currently using 40:1
@@penknifemonkey thanks anyways my little moter is in bits I've riped the iner gasket on the water jacket so tommrow I'll get some advice about that ,im hoping to use a liquid gasket compound looks tricky to cut out an not sure if they still make thease ,but same as your moter crusted up thermostat learning heaps cheers!
@@petersquiresquire6025 I used liquid gasket sealer. Let it set before running up in water. Other wise like mine the water pushed it out. My engine is still running nice.

Hi the little outboard seems going nicely no overheating just gotta chane gear box oil and ziptie fueline hoping to take it out over weekend for a test i have a 2hp so I'll bring it just in case.
It can be a little tricky. It gets caught on a shelf. I shone a light up the shaft to try guide it in. It's a bit fiddly! Especially when you don't want the gear rod bracket to come off to. Very very generally pull the pull cord to move the engine splines, so they line up with the drive shaft. Hope this helps. Chris

I’m always bemused by folk that start engines after long periods of idleness without any maintenance. Just because it runs doesn’t mean the engine is ok. You can see the state of that engine which was designed and to the highest standards. Rinsing is useless, outboard motors must be stripped occasionally. Generally it’s a single motor and if it fails you are in big trouble. If your lawnmower engine overheats and seizes, chill and drink a beer. You won’t be so chilled if you’re a mile offshore.
Indeed. It was in a shocking condition. This summer the engine did some big miles in Poole Harbour. It's running nice, but because it's not been looking after, it is a but rough around the edges. It does have a new thermostat which I put in before the trip.
dee mudah water is supposed to be hot when it comes out of your motor. If it is not hot, it is not cooling your engine down at all, which is the whole point of the water.

Solved! I pulled the carby off yet again and pulled out the pilot jet, it was totally blocked! now back together and running and idling very nicely.

Also how would I torque the bolts down to spec, seeings how half of them there is no room my torque wrench?

I noticed in Part 1 The engine was Pumping out good water did it eventually stop doing that?

50:1 premix. So if your using 20 litres of petrol its 400ml of oil

Your gear housing is a lot better than mine the salt has eaten the aluminium around the oil seals on the drive shaft and about half of its missing

What's the blue gel you had on the bottom part?
Gasket sealer. Apply and let it sit for a while before bolting up. It helps it's performance. On eBay you can get the proper gasket kits.

I have a Similar Engine and want to during Load My engine Starts to Pump Out water that is hot! and I am concerned
at idle Water is always cool.
How hot is hot? It's warm but not hot hot.

I did the same on that Mainer model, spent hours getting it to run.....then some one stole it out of my boat locker. Grrr.
