Rock music goes back to rock 'n' roll, which in turn arose from the combination of country music and rhythm and blues. Bill Haley's record Rock Around the Clock from April 12, 1954 helped rock 'n' roll internationally to breakthrough. The best-known representatives of rock 'n' roll in the 1950s were Bill Haley, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Buddy Holly. During this time, Chuck Berry in particular established the guitar as a new lead instrument, replacing the previously used saxophone with it.
Rock music as an independent form of music differs from rock 'n' roll essentially in terms of rhythm: in rock, the eighth notes are played in binary form, i.e. "straight", as is known from Latin American and European music. In rock 'n' roll, on the other hand, the eighth notes between the beats (between the quarter notes) are shifted slightly backwards, creating a ternary rhythm (shuffle) as known from classical jazz.
Since the 1950s and early 1960s, a completely new peripheral of technical objects had to be invented around the new music genre, which would have been unthinkable without its electrical amplification. Tinkerer Leo Fender invented the Telecaster in 1950, the first massive solid body electric guitar that reduced the annoying feedback that had been a regular feature of full body guitars. In 1951 he set another standard with the first electric bass (Fender bass). Gibson quickly followed suit in 1952 with the Les Paul and in 1961 with the simpler SG models. Since 1962, Jim Marshall has provided the necessary volume with his amplifiers and boxes produced in Harnwell, England. Ernie Ball replaced makeshift banjo strings with thinner, easier-to-play strings made specifically for electric guitars and basses. Another invention by Ball, himself a guitarist, was his "Slinky" string sets from "extra" (08-38) to "not even Slinky" (12-56), which catered to a wide variety of tastes and habits. Fender, Marshall, Gibson and Ball all worked closely with various guitarists such as Pete Townshend, Ritchie Blackmore and Jimi Hendrix to develop new and improved products.
Rock music, or rock for short, serves as a generic term for music styles that have emerged since the late 1960s from the mixing of rock 'n' roll of the late 1950s and early 1960s with other styles of music such as B. beat music and blues have developed. Many genres within rock music are identified with individual youth cultures.
