- Maps are all imperfect because they portray the globe in just two dimensions. Most maps, like the Mercator projection, distort the size or shape of landmasses, which skews our perceptions of how big continents and countries are compared to one another. When you consider square mileage though, a whole new world appears. Inspired by this map of Africa's true size from German graphic designer Kai Krause, we created 15 map overlays to open your eyes to some real geography.

Benjamin Schröder Ikr.Russia and canada has small population due to half their land being unhabitable due to coldness and Australia has 90% of their land unhabitable due to deserts.Africa has a the world's highest birth rates.

Siberia, Alaska, North Canada, and all the deserts (and also tropical forests) of the world are very rich mining lands that products a big part of what needs our mechanical civilization. Monaco is a 1,8km2 state and has 30,000 inhabitants who lives with one of the highest world comfort. If organised like in Monaco, the 7,3 billions inhabitants of the earth could live on 438 000 km2 somewhere on seashores. Or as Netherlands, 17 millions people on 33000km2 out of water, that will be 14 100 000 km2, you can compare to the 153 millions km2 land or to the 66 millions of km2 of land able to support agriculture. Over population is a problem when it increases the call over natural non-renewables ressources including farming land, (non-sustainability that where predicted in 1972 by the "Club of ROme Report" made by MIT), over exploitation of natural renewables ressources on way to be destroyed ( pure water sources, fresh air, forests, fish,) increases pollution and cost to support it, increases problems of use of land, cohabitation, etc....

In my country's schools they use a different map type so country's sizes are realistic, so when I see that map it always looks so weird

Boils down to population density and inhabitable land within borderlines drawn on maps by wealthy people making deals to acquire commodities to create goods to sell to the masses to consume.
Would be interesting to see distribution of top military powers known forces outside their country of origin. Not to mention percentage of population who are actively, in reserve/national guard/recallable/standby status, and formerly in their military compared to civilians without any tactical or survival training.

Simple math:
3.7*2=7.4
Plus , when you physically put those countries in other countries , some of the land overlaps one another.

Even the 4 biggest Africian countries' total size equals to Russia's.
