The reason is it was originally a 6 lane track, remember it’s a very old school and building. So when they wanted to extend the track, they wanted to preserve the sacred walls of the stadium so they extended the track inward adding 3 lanes inward. So lane 4 on this track is the equivalent of a normal track lane 1. (Lanes 1, 2, and 3 start before the finish line for an open 400m)
Another instance where those three initial legs are asking "why did I bother giving my all for positioning?" Those 400m and 800m guys were pushing and shoving each other to give their team the baton first, but it didn't make a bit of difference.
Slowing down for the mile leg is so dumb. All that hard work for the first 3 legs for nothing. Allowing everyone back in it. OKST deserves their lackluster placing.
@@baumsquad222eah their 800m runner didn’t have a good race putting pressure on their miler who essentially took off w/4 other guys and was ‘forced’ (or decided ) to run the group pace. He obviously felt like he wasn’t going to be able to drop them.🤷♀️
thanks a lot for posting! and yeah, so fast that college record was in hand for a bunch of squads. maybe some didnt feel good or felt their chances were better off a slow pace
If you have a strong kick (can finish the last lap much quicker than the previous laps), it’s better to run the race tactically (slow and calculated like they tried to do). Particularly if you think your kick is quicker than anyone else’s. Much harder to gauge where your energy will be at by the last lap if you run the whole thing evenly at a quick pace
Plus the teams they “let back into the race” will be more worn out by the final lap since they had to run much quicker to catch up to the teams in the lead. Thus exhausting much more of their energy
It’s all strategy though. They could’ve intimidated the chase pack by going out quickly like you mentioned. In that scenario, they would’ve made it seem as if it was too big of a lead for the chase pack to realistically catch up to them thus discouraging the chase pack from pushing hard enough to regain a chance at placing. The lead pack just decided the sit and kick method would be more effective in this case based on where their energy was at
Why was the rail in the lane going into turn 3? Unacceptable for such a high profile meet. Someone could have really gotten hurt and ruined their career.
Annual reminder that the track at UPenn is one of the weirdest tracks ever
Yeah I never understood why they made it like that 😂😂

Do my eyes deceive me? An actual good title to an athletics video that doesn’t give away the winner?
Wasn't WILD though, so no

People complain when milers go tactical, but Ok St. just showed you why people don't want to lead.
Adam Spencer on the last leg for wisconsin, jackson sharp ran first. Abdullahi was a beast on that 800!!
Adbullahi won the race for them, imo.
Hate when the mile leg fucks it up
S/o Wisconsin they earned it
A win is a win, but dogging it is not only chickenshit, but a slap in the face to the first 3 guys who busted their asses.

We need more runners like Steve Prefontaine. Why bother running a whole mile if you're only going to race the last 200m?

Not taking away from Wisconsin though, they certainly deserved it. Especially the 800m leg.

I also don’t understand why they took the mile out so slow and let everyone else back into the race.
