Hello, ladies and gentlemen. Here is my review/opinion/walkthrough of Felix The Cat (Dragon Co). Graphics: A- | The graphics are not too bad. Felix looks like Felix and the enemies are not too bad either. Music/Sound: A | The music is surprisingly good - almost to Super Game levels of greatness, in fact. I would probably listen to any music in Felix The Cat (Dragon Co) rather than Aladdin 2. Controls: D | Okay, fine - the controls aren't as bad as Aladdin 2 for the NES. At least it's possible to beat Felix The Cat (Dragon Co) without savestates. At least they're more responsive than Aladdin 2 for the NES. They're still fairly bad, but at least low-ceiling jumps aren't a problem here. There are some issues with them, though: if you just fall straight off a platform, you're unable to move after you just fall off. However, if you jump before you fall off, then you can control your jumping pretty well. Felix moves pretty slow, though (and that can be a bad thing at times). Gameplay: D | Oh boy.....where do I begin? To be honest, the gameplay is not as bad as Aladdin 2 for the NES. However, it is still pretty bad. (Yes, it is possible to do a No Death Run of Felix The Cat by Dragon Co - it might be even possible to do a No Damage Run of Felix The Cat by Dragon Co). The levels, while they're big, are badly designed (this is most noticeable in Levels 3, 6 and 7 where blind jumps are a necessity). Also, pixel perfect jumps start to happen in Level 3 - which isn't impossible to make, but it's harder than it should be (because of the way the game's designed). Enemy placement isn't great, either. Yes, you do have a power-up tier system, but unlike the Felix The Cat Hudson Soft game, Felix The Cat has ZERO mercy invincibility. That means you can go from Tank Felix to death really quickly. Also, the difficulty is uneven (involving the levels and the bosses). Speaking of which.....there's only 2 bosses in the game (and they're both easy - assuming you don't get hit, of course). Levels 1 and 2 are fine (at least for this game's standards), but Levels 3, 6 and 7 can be a pain (with the bad level design and bad enemy placement). Levels 4 and 5, on the other hand, are really easy. You do have a reasonable time limit, but since Felix moves pretty slowly, it can be hard to finish certain levels on time if you don't bother to skip most of the power-ups (levels 4 and 7 apply here). Fortunately, there are checkpoints, so it's not that bad. Speaking of the enemies, they can appear instantly (as in LITERALLY pop into place), which can cause a cheap hit (or possibly a cheap death). I have seen that happen a fair bit. I would have to assume that the engine that Dragon Co uses is at fault for the cause of enemies appearing instantly. One more thing: get a heart (preferably to max, at least on the land levels) as soon as you can. Boxing Felix just sucks. Worse, Boxing Felix actually has a wind up punch that takes 2 seconds to execute (and by that point, an enemy will have already touched you). There's also some weird quirks and glitches (like being able to jump in mid air after using a spring) and the level early end glitch V1 (which is done by doing the displacement glitch on a horizontally moving platform to the point that Felix is already touching the right edge of the screen) and V2 (which is just tapping the swim/fly button on the water and sky levels until Felix reaches the right edge of the screen). Overall: D+ | Okay, fine.......Felix The Cat (Dragon Co) is not the worst bootleg platformer. At least it's better than Aladdin 2 (NES). It's still kind of mediocre, though. Positives: Tank Felix in Felix The Cat (Dragon Co) is actually BETTER than Tank Felix in Felix The Cat (Hudson Soft). I mean, it shoots in a straight line, so it's already better than the arching shots that Tank Felix used in the Hudson Soft Felix The Cat game. Low-ceiling jumps are not a problem in Felix The Cat (by Dragon Co), either. Negatives: Bad level design and bad controls are the reason why I game this game a D+. Also, UFO Felix kind of sucks because the projectiles disappear after a short distance (though level 5 is really easy, anyway) and Submarine Felix also kind of sucks. It's also possible to just skip the bosses by doing the V1 version of the level early end glitch (which makes me wonder why Dragon Co even bothered to put bosses in Felix The Cat by Dragon Co). The walkthrough will be in the next part.
Walkthrough of Felix The Cat (Dragon Co) - without the end level early glitch and with the level early end glitch (Part 1) Level 1 (w/o the end level early glitch): As I said in the review, you should get Tank Felix as soon as you can (because it's the best power-up out of the all the power-ups in the game). In this level, you don't need to worry too much about hustling (probably because it's not that long). Jump over/shoot/avoid enemies if necessary and be careful on the platforms. The level design is probably the best in this level because there's not too many blind jumps. Near the end of level 1, you will fight a caveman (who should be really easy with Tank or Car Felix). He takes 4 hits with Tank Felix. Level 1 (w/the end level early glitch): You will have to do most of level 1, but close to the end there's a horizontally moving cloud platform that you can use to do the level early end glitch and skip the first boss). Level 2 (w/o the end level early glitch): Again, be careful on the platforms. Don't bother to drop straight down (because you can't move if you do) - instead jump and avoid/shoot/jump over enemies if necessary. Try to keep Tank Felix as long as you can (and get a heart if you lose Tank Felix) because Tank Felix's projectiles shoot in a straight line. Be careful of insta-popping enemies in this level. Level 2 (w/the end level early glitch): Ha, you can skip most of level 2 with this glitch. This time, do drop straight down (near the first gap) after avoiding a few enemies (you will land near a horizontally-moving platform). Use the horizontally-moving platform to perform the glitch.
Walkthrough of Felix The Cat (Dragon Co) - without the end level early glitch and with the end level early glitch (Part 2) Level 3 (w/o the end level early glitch): This is where the level design gets bad (because of the blind jumps and the screen). There is a point where a pixel perfect jump happens in this level (near the beginning of it). Again, keep shooting/avoid/jumping over enemies and try to keep Tank Felix as long as you can. There are points in the level where you may have to drop straight down (especially the part with the camel enemies) and the blind jump parts. Level 3 (w/the end level early glitch): You still have to make the pixel perfect jump near the beginning of the level, but at least you don't have to do blind jumps (because there's a horizontally-moving cloud before the blind jumps). Use that cloud to do the glitch. Level 4 (w/o the end level early glitch): Hustle, hustle, hustle.....because if you do not hustle, you will probably run out of time and be reduced to Boxing Felix (underwater). Boxing Felix (underwater) sucks just as much as Boxing Felix (on land). Do not go out of your way to collect power-ups, because it takes too much time to do so. Avoid enemies, but shoot them if necessary and hustle and you should be able to make it on time. (Also, if you do not care about doing a No-Death Run of this game, you can take a death here and re-spawn at a checkpoint nearby). Level 4 (w/the end level early glitch): This time, you do not have to hustle. Keep on touching the ceiling and you should see that Felix gets pushed a bit to the right every time he does so. Do it often enough and you should be able to skip a pretty decent chunk of level 4.
Walkthrough of Felix The Cat (Dragon Co) - without the end level early glitch and with the end level early glitch (Part 3) Level 5 (w/o the end level early glitch): Fly to the top and just stay there. Most of the enemies will not be able to hit you and most of the enemies spawn below you anyway, so it's safer to stay at the top. (I didn't even have to kill a single enemy in level 5 - I just either flew above them or I avoided them). Level 5 (w/the end level early glitch): Do the same as you did in Level 4 (if you had bothered to do the end level early glitch V2 in that level). Level 6 (w/o the end level early glitch): Oh no.....there's MORE pixel perfect jumps and blind level jumps. Near the beginning of Level 6, there's a pixel perfect jump that can be irritating to make). More blind level jumps follow soon after, so be careful. Kill or jump over and avoid enemies. At least there's less enemies in this level. Level 6 (w/the end level early glitch): Aside from the pixel perfect jump that you have to make, the blind jumps in this level can be skipped (because there's a horizontally-moving cloud that's before the blind jumps and you can use that to do the glitch).
Walkthrough of Felix The Cat (Dragon Co) - without the end level early glitch and with the end level early glitch (Final Part) Level 7 (w/o the end level early glitch): This is the other level that you have to hustle (if you're trying to do a No-Death Run of this game without the end level early glitch) if you are going to make it on time (without doing the end level early glitch). Try your best to avoid the deluge of cannonballs and axes coming your way (although sometimes it is impossible to avoid them because of the way the game's designed). If you have to wait, do so (but no longer than necessary). Kill or avoid/jump over enemies. If you have to take a hit, do so. (Why is level 7 reminiscent of the battleship levels from Super Mario Bros 3)? Trust me, this is the hardest level in the game (w/o the end level early glitch) - too bad it also has a ridiculously easy boss. BOSS 2/FINAL BOSS: Captain Kidd - seriously, he's just as early as the caveman boss from earlier. Again, Car or Tank Felix EASILY destroys this boss. Oh, and you think you're done! Think again.....there's another pixel-perfect jump (over a pit) that's AFTER the boss! Level 7 (w/the end level early glitch): So this level goes from being the hardest level in the game to being the easiest level in the game - all because of the end level early glitch. Here's the funny thing: there's a horizontally-moving cloud platform RIGHT at the start of level 7. Use that, and you will skip over a huge chunk of level 7 and the second and final boss in the game. (Also, I noticed that the frame rate of Felix The Cat (by Dragon Co) constantly changes).
Also, why is this called Felix The Cat 3 (on some stand-alone carts) when it is the second Felix The Cat game (unless the Game Boy port of Hudson Soft's Felix The Cat game is the second Felix The Cat game - which doesn't compute) - you know what, screw it - I do not care. Dragon Co can call it Felix The Cat Infinity for all I care. This is a mediocre bootleg which CAN be played, but most people shouldn't care to play it (beyond 1 or 2 playthoughs).
Felix on the title has that classic mid 1930's look of being short and plump, along with the face proportion and the way his jaw move, the difference being that the tail and whisker isn't there. I think the game is loosely based on the episode about the goose that layed golden eggs base on the plot of the game.
It is :) The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs was public domain at the time this game was created (and still is ofc) so this game isn't really bootlegging off Felix
I like how they made this a psuedo sequel to the Hudson game. Dragon was clearly keen on western animation; Nu Pogodi, Looney Tunes (Wait and See), The Lion King, and of course Felix here. Nice Code also made a Crash game, a character based on old cartoons. Not to mention a lot of their games have very expressive, almost rubberhose-esque animation
They also made one on tom and jerry but it is a port of a genesis game called Tom and Jerry: Frantic Arctics but they did do sprites and music better than some bootlegs but one thing the current version of dragon (Nice Code) makes worse games than dragon did you just realized that?
@@JaxCoolKartunes yeah I did. Some NC hacks of this game exist like ‘The Hacker’ or ‘Super Hero’, and ‘Primitive Man’ for Tom and Jerry. The Jerry game does indeed have some good sprites and music even if the graphics overall are much cruder. The first level theme is particularly atmospheric
They're definitely riffing on the official NES game, but using unpopular (but fun) 1930s public domain color talkie Felix for the plot is a really weird (but interesting) choice!
This game would be much better with better controls. This bad engine ruined so many Dragon Co. games. They have good big levels, but laggy controls kills everything.
