Your video was a suggestion after watching another that picked up the remains of a crash off the Wolf Creek hairpin turn! I'm delighted to discover your channel, and am looking forward to watching all your content. Living in a city that I can't drive out of makes me long for the open road, very happy to ride shotgun, and not drive like the old lady I am.
Waiting for this video! 30 years ago about midnight, temperature -14 deg and in a full rocky mountain blizard with a foot of powder on the road, I was late for date in Durango. The tires were chained up as required on the 1973 volvo passenger car. Apparently the pass was closed, for there was no other vehilcle to be seen. Then theres that sinking feeling afterr summiting when the car begins to lift up and loose momentum. About 31.5 in the video both headlights whent out (when a relay froze up)and i could not tell where the road became air. About then a grader passed me clearing the road and provided some light for me to follow. Till now I have never seen Wolf Creek Pass in the light of day, but those obtuse tree lines against the night sky are still memory pefect! Thanks Mike!
Coming over Wolf Creek Pass on a harley, with 7 others, back in 2007. Just about the time we crested the top an absolute monster rain storm hit. Couldnt see more than just a few feet....literally, 3-5 feet. Scariest time on a motorcycle ever, and Ive ridden a couple hundred thousand miles. We couldnt stop because there was no safe place to pull over. We could only hope the guy in front was on the right side of the road, that no other cars were over the line, and that we didnt go off the edge. That section of road has been burned into my mind. Ive only been there that one time, havent seen any video like this in all these years, yet 14 years later it looks exactly like what I had remembered. We finally stopped at the gas station once coming down. I was never so relieved to pull over and shut the bike off. Whew...that was a rough one
Thanks Mike for the continuance video and as I sit here in my comfy chair , watching you on telly , it reminds me not all roads are like ours, dry and somewhat boring but each to his/her own I guess - what is next ?

I don't know if he's ever went through there, but, I will ask him. Safe travels!!!
Watching from the Philippines. I miss the scenery but not the snow. I have been over that pass a few times years back and going east I never thought I was going to reach the top as the climb just kept on going up.

Do you remember when it was only 2 lane up and down and a lot steeper I used to haul cattle over that pass back in the 80 s out of Durango and the four corners area be safe
We did this two years ago in a Chevy HHR with a U Haul on the back earlier in March than this, the year the got 575 inches of snow. The brakes were burning coming down.
I don't understand why, with even one truck going over the edge at that curve there are zero barriers there at all!! Having them just prior to that dangerous spot is assanine to be unprotected like that. Thanks so much for this awesome ride along. Listening to the purr of the motor was sweet to hear as was your narration. I always wanted to try Wolf Creek but never got any loads that way. The cl I sent I hoot was Monarch in the winter...got over and they closed it behind me. That was interesting to say the least. Anyway, you made this a neat run. Thanks for sharing!
When Wolf creek are used to be two lanes no shorter was definitely a white Knuckle experiment on the automatic do you stick it in like third gear and then have your check on three when you’re going downhill like this
I did this run in the late 1960s or early1970s , still a rather new driver at night from west to east in a KW cab over with a six cly Detroit 13 speed. Thanks for the video, nice to see what I could not see that night.lol
I just came trough Wolf Creek Pass last month. Road is no joke, I was driving an older Chevy half ton with no load and had to stop at the U turn to let my brakes cool down. I used 2nd gear after that
Mike I went over Wolf Creek Pass in early Septemeber 2016 in my Toyota Camry some of the leaves were turning color as I was traveling East and they were doing road work.Blasting rock away as the Cliff had slide away and there was only one lane of traffic. I was following a State trooper an after he got down on the East side he pulled over and I pull over too. I wanted to know about different HWY? HE said follow me and when I turned right you go left.
Hey Mike the San Juan is great fishing all year especially below Navaho Dam in the quality water. Catch and release, barbless hooks, flies and lures only, no bait. Water is 40 degrees all year. I’ll be there mid April with a guide. Best way, they know what to use. Great video thanks for posting.
I live in Durango and have been over the pass many times. Lots of trucks go over the hairpin. When they say slow down they mean it! Have seen some pretty nasty wrecks there.
I lived in a cabin in between south fork and del Norte the summer of 2015 and traveled wolf creek pass often. Loved this pass and being able to have access daily when time allowed. Seen tons of huge elk and deer but never any mountain lions- even camping in the higher elevations but not to say there weren’t any...possibly sizing me up for lunch?’ Thx for a look back into the old territory!!lots of bears raiding trash receptacles in South Fork but I never got to see one up close and personal! Wolf Creek is far more beautiful on a sunny day! Yes, plz do Independence pass when time allows, and yes, only in a car. Makes me miss the Rockies so much!

Yes, your right about the chp on the pass, i got nailed going east bound on the climb after crossing the creek. A ridiculous 45 on the way up i was going a frustating about 65 in my vintage 911. Told him i was enjoying his beautiful Colorado roads. Gave me a break at less than 15 over. Enjoy your vids. I must be a trucker at heart.
Hi Mountain Man Mike. Nice drive. There is a road that has a down hill slope that comes to an intersection. It is common that most people are over the speed limit. Well, I got caught on a hand held radar (1970’s). I wanted to see how fast I was going. When the officer moved the unit towards me it unplugged it’s self from the car and the screen was blank. I didn’t get a ticket just a warning.
I admire truckers. They are so often under rated. They drive so many miles in any weather, on a schedule. The customers need the deliveries.

Me an' Earl was haulin' chickens
On a flatbed out of Wiggins
And we'd spent all night on the uphill side
Of 37 miles of hell
Called Wolf Creek Pass
Which is up on the Great Divide
We was settin' there suckin' toothpicks
An' drinkin' Nehis and onion soup mix
And I says, "Earl, let's mail a card to mother
And then send them chickens on down to the other side
Yeah, let's give 'em a ride"
Wolf Creek Pass, way up on the Great Divide
Truckin' on down the other side
Well, Earl put down his bottle
Mashed his foot down on the throttle
And then a couple'a boobs
With a thousand cubes
In a 1948 Peterbilt screamed to life
We woke up the chickens
We roared up offa that shoulder
Sprayin' pine cones, rocks, and boulders
And put four hundred head
Of them Rhode Island Reds
And a couple a' burnt-out roosters on the line
Look out below
'Cause here we go
Wolf Creek Pass, way up on the Great Divide
Truckin' on down the other side
Well, we commenced a-truckin'
And them hens commenced a-cluckin'
And then Earl took out a match
And scratched his pants
And lit up the unused half of a dollar cigar and took a puff
Says "My, ain't this pretty up here"
I says, "Earl, this hill can spill us
You better slow down or you gonna kill us
Just make one mistake
And it's the pearly gates
For them 85 crates
Of USDA-approved cluckers
You wanna hit second?"
Wolf Creek Pass, way up on the Great Divide
Truckin' on down the other side
Well, Earl grabbed on the shifter
And he stabbed her into fifth gear
And then the chromium plated
Fully illuminated
Genuine accessory shift knob
Come right off in his hand
I says, "You wanna screw that thing back on, Earl?"
He was tryin' to thread it on there
When the fire fell off a' his cigar
And dropped on down
Sorta rolled around
And then lit in the cuff of Earl's pants
And burned a hole in his sock
Yeah, sorta set him right on fire
I looked on outta the window
And I started countin' phone poles
Goin' by at the rate of four to the seventh power
Well I put two and two together
And added 12 and carried five
And come up with 22 thousand
Telephone poles an hour
I looked at Earl and his eyes was wide
His lip was curled, and his leg was fried
And his hand was froze to the wheel
Like a tongue to a sled in the middle of a blizzard
I says, Earl, "I'm not the type to complain
But the time has come for me to explain
That if you don't apply some brake real soon
They're gonna have to pick us up
With a stick and a spoon"
Well, Earl reared back
And cocked his leg
Stepped down as hard as he could on the brake
And the pedal went clear to the floor
And stayed right there on the floor
And he says it was sorta like steppin' on a plum
Well, from there on down
It just wasn't real pretty
It was hairpin county
And switchback city
One of 'em looked like a can full'a worms
Another one looked like malaria germs
Right in the middle of the whole damn show
Was a real nice tunnel
Now wouldn't you know
Sign says clearance to the 12-foot line
But the chickens was stacked to 13-nine
Well we shot that tunnel at a hundred-and-ten
Like gas through a funnel and eggs through a hen
We took that top row of chickens off
Slicker than scum off a Louisiana swamp
Went down and around and around and down
We run outta ground at the edge of town
Bashed into the side of a feed store
In downtown Pagosa Springs
Wolf Creek Pass, way up on the Great Divide
Truckin' on down the other side
Wolf Creek Pass, way up on the Great Divide

Thanks for allowing me to ride shotgun. I've driven OTR, solo, over 24 years, semi-retired now. I drove out of Denver & drove Hwy 285 & 160, LaVita pass to and from Alamosa & Monte Vista almost every week. Enjoying just being along for the drive!
It's definitely one of the most scenic drives in Colorado! I enjoyed driving through the area about a year ago.
Shout out to those wiper blades. Harry and Larry did a great job.
My favorite mountain pass! We've done it 3 times in our motorhome! C.W. Mcall has great songs about that area of Colorado. Thanks for the ride!
That 1948 Peterbilt screamed alive…. We woke up the chickens….
Finally seeing Wolf Creek Pass...thanks for the trip!
Wunderbar die Strecken durch die USA. Die würde ich gerne mal fahren. Einfach super! Danke fürs mitfahren.
Thank you Mike for a comfortable non political ride through a famous pass.
Central California Watching
Love this drive. Never did this one in a rig though. Great vid!
I appreciate your drive over Wolf Creek Pass, Colorado and later, next year I'm 2023 hoping to do a motorcycle trip from Arizona.
Greatly enjoy all of your videos! Keep sharing...they´re very relaxing, after a long day!!!
Yeeehhhaaa MMM!👋
Lovely Road and Landscape !🏞⛰
Truckdriving at his best!🤠🇺🇲🚛
Have Fun Mike!
You are a lucky Man, trucking in this specatacular Landscape!
We have so high Roads and Passes only in the Alps or in the Pyrenäen!
Peace ✌
Happy new year 2022. This is my favorite Pass to drive 🚗 on because the scenery is so very beautiful no matter what the season!
I enjoy taking these trips with you! That Wolf Creek Pass was a booger! It's funny, but, as you went around the hair pin curve, I tried to look over the cliff to see if I could see the truck that went over. My youngest brother was a trucker. I don't know if he's ever went through there, but, I will ask him. Safe travels!!!
Watching from the Philippines. I miss the scenery but not the snow. I have been over that pass a few times years back and going east I never thought I was going to reach the top as the climb just kept on going up.
Awesome scenery....thanks for shareing!
Thank you, Mike! This was an interesting road with GREAT driving instructions. Well done!
Always a pleasure to ride shotgun w/you, Mike.... Thanks for another beautiful scenic ride and great content as always...Peace!
I park in the same spot you pointed out to go fishing😂 one of my favorite spots to park is the big pullout for lake fork trailhead. South fork of the Rio Grande is full of wild cutthroat, brooks, browns and rainbows. Most people completely overlook it though. Edit: 6:30 you point out the exact trailhead parking I was talking about😂
Listening with ear buds the thundering sound of your truck is incredible!
Thanks for theshare.i remember it from the 70s 80s.was bad than.we were on the way to pagosa springs mineral water.and stopped there and durango.good driveing.they had that trucker song wolf creek pass.we play while going over.along with Joe Cocker, .thanks for the memories.🤗❤👍
Beautiful Video! It's been a few years since I drove this route! It was great to see again! Thanks for sharing ! 😊
Always enjoyed this pass...no problem, just gear down, keep slow and steady, watch what is going on, listen to your engine, nice and easy...no big deal.
Hats off to all of you Truckers that drive here in SoCO! Thanks for all you do!! We appreciate you! 😊 Stay safe out there.
@@cherb_soco1891 Thank you. I retired a few years ago....but I still go back as I always have to my favorite places up there. And to be fair...I love Wyoming, Utah, and the Dakotas. ( some very nice fossil finds...well aside from the rattlers lol )
@@cierakitty the Black Hills are breathtaking! Beautiful bike ride through there.
@@cherb_soco1891 Yes, and the Badlands...I never get tired of them. In Wyoming I am all over the place lol, same in Utah...but a bit partial to the Moab region. Have you been through Wind River Canyon area in Wyoming ? And then the drive from Cody into Yellowstone ? Every year it changes.
@@cierakitty Haven't made it up that way yet. But that's on our fall trip list! We celebrate hay harvest with a relaxing trip. Yellowstone is a bucket list park!
I absolutely love this channel and riding along with you. Take care and be safe.
Please do this gorgeous drive in the fall or summer.
Awsome trip.thaks for letting us ride along.never been down 160.have to get out here some day.food for thought if you have drum brakes an wet or running in snow warm them up some once in awhile even if they are adjusted correctly.when very cold ice will form between shoes an drums and cross winds low side will be wet an up side dry.hang on.use light pressure to help warm/dry out.if shoes out adjustment a little pump down when stopped on level should help on self adjusters.use very quick pumping peddle.if to far out need to manual adjust.1/4 to 1/2 turn back from snugged up.you saw road starting to freeze.GOOD EYE AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL.Happy trails.
Wolf Creek Ski Area is at elevation summit is 11,456.00 feet above sea level and the parking area is over 9k feet. Some of the longest runs of 2 miles at this ski area.
Was there in the 80s incredible area
Great trip, great scenery - thank you Mike!
I put your vids up on my big screen TV. Wow. Love the veiws. Friends ask me. Whos the driver. I tell them and show them your channel. Went over by. Freind lastnight shoot some pool and gess what. He had this vid on his big screen. Thank you for makeing them.
Thanks for another great video! So fun riding along with you on a great ride! Be safe!
Wolf creek pass. My favorite ski slope. Lol
I haven't been to Wolf Creek Pass in 12 years. Not since my family trailered back my dad's 68 Chevelle with 5000 pounds of drill pipe strapped under the car. Almost burnt up the brakes because my dad forgot to adjust the trailer brakes for the load lol. It was set for an empty trailer.
The terrain is as beautiful as those turns are terrifying.
hi bro! this is one of my favorite channels... when my mom was alive she drove big rig all through canada mostly bc to alberta. When she was pregnant with me she drove truck maybe that's i fall asleep when i watch trucking videos hahah. I always find your video's calming and relaxing seeing all the sights. drive safe and i look forward to more videos
Do you remember when it was only 2 lane up and down and a lot steeper I used to haul cattle over that pass back in the 80 s out of Durango and the four corners area be safe
Good morning from CANADA 👍🇨🇦✌️✌️✌️✌️Thank you for the beautiful ride
No barriers so the snowplows can push the snow off the road.
GM from New Mexico, safe travels...👍
When Wolf creek are used to be two lanes no shorter was definitely a white Knuckle experiment on the automatic do you stick it in like third gear and then have your check on three when you’re going downhill like this
I watch and really miss Colorado !! 👍
I did this run in the late 1960s or early1970s , still a rather new driver at night from west to east in a KW cab over with a six cly Detroit 13 speed. Thanks for the video, nice to see what I could not see that night.lol
And the old Peterbuilt roared to life! Come on Earl!
As always, thank you again, Mike and God bless.
Wolf Creek Pass is a litmus test for pickup truck pulling a 8000 lb. travel trailer! Last time we pulled it we did at the speed limit + all the way !
Thanks for sharing this video with us.
Right at 27:31 I remember a truck flying past me and back then it was a 2 lane road but the trailer tandems was on fire and lots of smoke.
Sir Mike !!!! Thanks for the ride & waiting for more !!!! ""KEEP IT SAFE ""!!
Beautiful drive. Thanks! I miss this country.
What r the reason for those thick walls that I see on that road as you go by ??????
Incredible! That would be a difficult drive even in summer!
Loved the ride, I love riding and driving mountain roads, the twistier the better.
There are other videos of Wolf Creek, but, your style is the best I've seen:) oh yea, the staters are drinking coffee in Pagosa👍
If I’m not mistaken, it’s a blue Kenworth hauling a load of beer that’s still visible on the cliff.
If my memory is correct from past driving over Wolf Creek pass, it's over 10,000 feet in elevation and don't think it's over 11,000 feet. Mike, your driving over Wolf Creek sure brought back some fond memories of my drives over the pass both directions! Super thanks for the ride along in the shotgun seat!
Happy trucking trails and as always, stay safe!
10,856 feet at the peak of the pass. 🙂 Beautiful drive!
Great video and enjoyable commentary
My first rocky mt experience was driving over independence pass near aspen. Quite impressive for a born and raised flatlander!
When is the best time of the season to drive the canyon
Thanks, Mike. Nice to see you back behind the wheel.
Thanks walt.. appreciate ya.. ☮️
Hey Mike. Cool video. I’m at Quality too (truck 360). Watching from San Antonio with a Win load. I have a RUclips channel too, so Quality is well represented on here! Keep up the good work.
Awesome.. what's your channel? I'ma check it out.
It’s called Rotolo’s Blue Goose. I think you can just tap my picture there and RUclips will take you straight to it. (My last name is Rotolo, and my truck is the Blue Goose.) I talk to Reno Rob a lot, and he likes the videos. He always has good suggestions for them.
Thanks for a beautiful ride!
You beat the snow storm on the 26th, you would have had a whole different drive! Welcome to Pagosa Springs.
