    This montage is brilliant directing.
Shrek returning home only to find it empty has hurt Shrek even more. Firstly Shrek did prefer living alone due to others misjudging his appearance as a 'monster' but upon seeing his swamp empty he actually regretted his wish as he actually hoped he still had company particularly as he realises that him & the fairy tale creatures are seen as 'freaks' and therefore in the same boat. Secondly he discovers by having his home cleared, he was being as cruel as Farquaad when in reality Shrek while a jerk wasn't an evil guy unlike Farquaad.
Donkey looking behind was him hoping Shrek would come back & apologise for his hurtful comments to him but doesn't, causing Donkey who never had friends until meeting Shrek caused him to suffering a lack of self esteem.
Shrek and Fiona seeing their reflections in a broken mirror & several mirrors respectively is a metaphor symbolising their happiness is now shattered.
Shrek throwing a flower into the fire symbolises that Fiona is just an old flame to him now and an indirect way she can burn in Hell.
Fiona lowering Farquaad in the cake shows what she really thinks of him.
Fiona then looking into the suit of armour symbolises that Shrek is her true knight in shining armour not Farquaad and a reminder that it was Shrek who rescued her.
And more famously Shrek sitting alone at his table with Fiona suddenly projecting into view at the other side of the screen has two symbolisms.
Firstly seeing Shrek then Fiona symbolises but also simulationsly foreshadows what was meant to be does happen. In other words Fiona should had been sitting at the other end of Shrek's table but thanks to Donkey, Shrek and Fiona eventually do live together.
Secondly seeing Fiona dine alone symbolises that Farquaad who is notably absent doesn't love Fiona and only seen her a pawn to be King.

Shrek is so interesting to me as a part of pop culture: it went from something enjoyed genuinely and considered a near instant classic, to that very odd, ironic, meme-laden era in the late 2000s/2010s that has since curved back to a sort of renaissance & reevaluation of its pivotal position in western animation. When this came out, I was a young child, and this scene always really stood out to me-it’s a sequence with moments of laughs and levity, but it also perfectly underscores the unexpected yet undeniable love that’s blossomed between our two leads, and the tragic heartbreak of how poor communication mixed with an unhealthy dash of the literally totalitarian status quo have convinced them both they’re better off playing the parts society has told them they’re supposed to play instead of pursuing THEIR happy ending. A six year old might have no concept of the Velvet Underground or John Cale’s spanning music career, but even back then, the soulful piano and stirring vocals in his Leonard Cohen cover brought that special kind of frisson only movies can make. Damn shame licensing rights issues kept this from being on the soundtrack-no disservice to Wainwright intended, but when I think of the version I want to hear, it’s this.

This scene explains the meaning of the song better than any other explanation.

I remember being about 12 years old. My younger bros would watch this movie every day. I would get so annoyed that it would always be on.
I remember my dad clumsily singing to this song as he thought it was beautiful. As do i. My dad has been gone for over 10 years now. I miss him terribly still.
Oh what I would do to relive those wonderful memories…

I ain’t gonna lie, the first time I watched this movie I didn’t like it.
I thought Shrek himself was mean, and unfunny and all the other characters were annoying, but I was a stupid 7 year old back then.
However, not long after I thought there were a few scenes I liked and quickly each time I liked more and more until it became my favorite movie series along with its sequels.
And now as a stupid adult I only appreciate it more with how you can relate to the characters. Donkey may be dumb but he’s like that sweet innocence we like to cling to and Shrek represents and shares your thoughts on how awful the world and its people, but also how you should never judge anyone on first sight

Funny that Dragon is kinda similar to Shrek in that regard. A feared and dangerous monster would never be loved by someone, but once again Donkey challenges this like he did against Shrek’s belief

This version of hallelujah is sung by John Cale, not Rufus Wainwright

Hey, I mean, if I met my true love and didn't see them for a while, I would feel pretty sad. I'd be even more miserable if I discovered she was my true love.
