Referring to it as The Elements as well. Really interesting, seeing as it has been questioned whether or not that was actually part of the original concept. Apparently it was.
Thanks for posting this! They are both charming. Years ago, I was having lunch at The Farmers Market at Fairfax & 3rd, in LA. I was eating gumbo. I looked up and facing me from the next table was Diane Rovell. I wanted so badly to walk up to her table and tell her how much I loved the Spring album. But I didn't. Probably a good decision. Fond memory, though.
I met Marilyn twice, at a Carl Tribute Concert and at the Museum of Radio and Television when California Saga played and did a Q&A. The NICEST person ever to a guy who was star struck.
Enjoyable to hear and see them still so young...but I can't help but think about that "My Diane" song from MIU album...when I first found out it was about Brian's sister-in-law, it blew my mind (& kinda still astounds me)
@@paulcasey6759 I think maybe that was Brian's thought process...but it didn't get him out of trouble for long...I think the eventual split and divorce from Marilyn was started soon after the MIU album, if not during...and I think MIU was the last Beach Boys album with the majority of the songs written by Brian...oddly enough it was the first Beach Boys album I owned and listened to and I loved it so much I bought more (first a budget album at that time, Love You, & then L.A...then Endless Summer, Spirit of America, & their newly released at the time Keepin the Summer Alive😂(I still think the MIU songs were fine but Al's production skills, while proficient, were nowhere near Brian's
@Ron You can imagine Brian's thinking - "y'know, I might just get away with it...gotta be smart...tell Dennis it's about some waitress I met... ", lolol. All those, what we might as well call "late period" BB albums, have at least a few gems on them, especially LA, and Love You is a complete, essential artifact; probably their last. Have you heard Dennis' Bambu? It's even better than Pacific Ocean Blue - totally stupendous, actually. Much of it's completely unsuited to the BB's, though. Mikey would've had a fit at Time For Bed, f'r instance, and it shows influences that are totally absent from the Boys - Bowie's Low, for example.
Brian and Marilyn were kinda both sleeping around for a while prior to their divorce, although from what I've read, Marilyn didn't do so until Brian suggested it. Still. Banging your wife's sister, possibly having something of a side relationship with her, that had to have been kind of crazy and hard for Marilyn.
This is classic footage, wish there was more video of American Spring available, both interviews and performances. In some ways an extra creative branch of Brian Wilson that emerged when problems surfaced in BBoys compositions. The Holland LP they talked about was great imo, and marked the end of that golden age of creative BBoys period that evolved in 10 or 11 years. Thereafter only partially glimpsed in future albums Id argue. The surprise Marilyn and Diane spoke of was the small vinyl 'Mount Vernon and Fairway' fairytale , including I m the Pied Piper, Magic Transistor Radio. Almost as radiojingles. Exceedingly strange on first hearing, but grew on me alot. In those jingles were glimpses of the harmonies still inside Brians psyche, stuff that could have been developed if the motivation had been there to do so. Marilyn and Diane actually had really good and complementary vocals, evident on the Spring album.
Am I wrong to be mad that the interviewer focuses so much on Brian when Diane and Marilyn are there to promote THEIR record? They are so sweet to answer every one of his questions, but surely they intended to promote themselves, not Brian.
What can they say, if the album was produced by Brian, most of the songs written by him. Even the idea of creating the group American Spring. It was his idea. So I don't see anything wrong with host's questions.
Look, we have a project conceived of by Brian Wilson who never toured and rarely did interviews. He wrote all the songs. They said it themselves. Yes, they are the ones promoting the album, but in they are representing his project. Bob Harris knows that he can’t interview Brian. Bob would also be asking about Brian if he were interviewing the Beach Boys themselves, and Brian wouldn’t be there with the Beach Boys either.
Brian made the music, produced, arranged everything, from a single bass note to all vocal harmonies... that's why these American Spring and Spring recordings are remembered and treasured. He could've hired a couple of anonymous singers with the same results
This is so fantastically awkward. Like...The American Spring album is amazing, but they all want to talk about The Beach Boys stuff! Also are they both high AF?
Dont think they were high. In 1972, this was the way to be as far as I can recall. The odd joint maybe they had, but Marilyn not into any heavy stuff at all.
Awkward? Not really. This pair practically were Beach Boys (Girls, then), singing on most BB albums. The American Spring album is a proper gem, though, especially Sweet Mountain and Thinkin' 'Bout You Baby (which is Darlin' in disguise!).
NO FILM FOOTAGE OF THEM AS HONEYS BOY THERES SOME INTERESTING SIDE. PRAY AND SURF. JIMMY WITH TEARS. THE ONE YOU CANT HAVE AND HES DOLLL WELL MADE BIG CLASSIC ARANGEMENTS. THESE GIRLS HAD TUFF IMAGE ABOUT THEM. TOTALLY COOL
David Sandler was co-producer on this album and was probably more involved than Brian. However , the Beach Boys and others made it seem that Brian was always more involved than he was .
I was thinking the same thing. I don't think that Marilyn indulged quite as much as Brian did, but I'm sure that she did experiment occasionally. She was the young wife of a rock star, living in the Hollywood hills, it was the 60s/70s, and she was surrounded by lots of other rock stars...so 2+2.
Definitely looks high - she initially resisted but, after giving in, seemed to bake with the best for a bit; I wonder if the fact she had both daughters by this time and Brian was getting worse - demanded that she straighten up & fly right - someone had to parent.
They even mentioned the "Fire" sessions. Epic.
Referring to it as The Elements as well. Really interesting, seeing as it has been questioned whether or not that was actually part of the original concept. Apparently it was.
The "special surprise" they were referring to in the Holland album must have been the 7" single - Mt. Vernon and Fairway.
They both were beautiful and seem fun to talk to. Also very talented. Great video

I've met VDP and Al Jardine and honestly wish I hadn't. They were both fine, but ... there's no point. I felt bad for bothering them.
Will Adapter this is the loveliest comment. Made me smile.
"YOU SNOOZE YOU LOSE"❣️
The Beach Boys referenced the farmers market at Fairfax and 3rd in their unreleased song "H.E.L.P. Is on the Way"
I met Marilyn twice, at a Carl Tribute Concert and at the Museum of Radio and Television when California Saga played and did a Q&A. The NICEST person ever to a guy who was star struck.
Wife of Brian Wilson; Mother of Wendy and Carnie Wilson. What an incredible family musical legacy!?!
I interviewed The Rovell sisters and Ginger Blake, they were great and this album is wonderful
Great Revealing interview with Marilyn and Diane Rovell Brilliant!
Fascinating interview! Thanks for posting it. Cool tidbits about the firehats and the sandbox.
Shame Bob didn't ask more about the American Spring album rather than the Beach Boys.A lost classic if ever there was one.
Yeah honestly, kind of rude to not talk much about American Spring.
Enjoyable to hear and see them still so young...but I can't help but think about that "My Diane" song from MIU album...when I first found out it was about Brian's sister-in-law, it blew my mind (& kinda still astounds me)
I know what you mean. How does Marilyn still talk to her sister?
Brian astutely gave it to Dennis to sing. You stay out of trouble that way.😅

These two were the inspiration for a bunch of Beach Boy hits.
Elora thanks for once again providing material I've never seen before. You are the best!
Incredible interview, I had no idea Diane was so involved!
This is really cool thank you for sharing!
They are so lovely
Wow this is revelatory footage😄.
Marilyn looks positively spooky here.
I concur !
Thanks this is too cool I love The Honeys & American Spring
I guess next, he'll interview Brian, asking him mostly questions about Marilyn
They were so right about Holland being good
They were beautiful ladies with beautiful voices.
Sweet mountain is great off this album.

I agree, Holland was the end of the "hip, creative" (Jack Rieley) era. "Endless Summer" happened the next year, then Mikey took over...
Diane was beautiful
I like Marilyn 😳
Yeah but then Marilyn gave the world Wendy- THE most gorgeous singer of the last 30 yrs,.
Indeed she was. Marilyn also had her own beauty. There are some old pics of her and Brian as well as some home movie clips where she is just gorgeous.
I'm a Marilyn man. So sultry, so knowing!
I met them at an Endless Summer Quarterly convention. Both very nice.
Am I wrong to be mad that the interviewer focuses so much on Brian when Diane and Marilyn are there to promote THEIR record? They are so sweet to answer every one of his questions, but surely they intended to promote themselves, not Brian.
It is very odd isn't it? Obvs Marylin and Diane were very involved with Brian's work and vice versa but c'mon hah
What can they say, if the album was produced by Brian, most of the songs written by him. Even the idea of creating the group American Spring. It was his idea. So I don't see anything wrong with host's questions.

Because the group was Brian's creation and he's the most interesting part of it.
Whispering Bob Harris.
Amazing 🙏
This is so fantastically awkward. Like...The American Spring album is amazing, but they all want to talk about The Beach Boys stuff! Also are they both high AF?
Dont think they were high. In 1972, this was the way to be as far as I can recall. The odd joint maybe they had, but Marilyn not into any heavy stuff at all.
The Rovell sisters were just so naturally cool, kinda like Patti Smith, they just seemed high all the time
They had probably been smoking a little pot, so I wouldn't say they are as high as fuck (*= AF).
;-)
Rock’n’roll
Awkward? Not really. This pair practically were Beach Boys (Girls, then), singing on most BB albums.
The American Spring album is a proper gem, though, especially Sweet Mountain and Thinkin' 'Bout You Baby (which is Darlin' in disguise!).
There's something about Marilyn that is incredibly, INCREDIBLY alluring. Those eyes! OMG! I think she's gorgeous.
Dare I say, I think she's better looking than Cher!
Magic!
Spring were sooooooooo awesome.
Seems like Brian was a bit of an enigma in those days-and much loved in the U.K. But yes the interviewer spent more time talking about the beach boys.
Damn they were both so gorgeous
Marilyn looks stoned here
That's just the way she looks. She's Jewish
Wendy looks so much like Diane.
The Rovell sisters are very, very captivating. I can see why Brian attached himself to both of them...
Brian was a lucky man
this host is epic lol, who is heee
bob harris! :-)
How would you get the American Spring album?
how do you have this?
Capes are good, as is pot. These ladies evidently agree with me. 😉
Elora
David Sandler was co-producer on this album and was probably more involved than Brian. However , the Beach Boys and others made it seem that Brian was always more involved than he was .
there were 3-4 songs that Brian was very involved in
What a babe ❤
Is Marilyn wearing a cape?! Could she have been one of Charlie's girls under the right circumstances?
weird Brian cheated on Marilyn with Diane, they look so similar it would be like being with his wife anyways lol.
Diane, is a babe 😍 !
Hot, Hot, Marilyn and Diane Hottest Brunettes I seen I had no idea Acting like stoned hippie chicks
I love it
Disappointed to see Marilyn who seems to be a little high in this video. Hope I'm wrong.
There is nowt wrong with being a little high. :-)
Nope, she was very against all drugs.
What's wrong with that?
Definitely looks high - she initially resisted but, after giving in, seemed to bake with the best for a bit; I wonder if the fact she had both daughters by this time and Brian was getting worse - demanded that she straighten up & fly right -

It's entertaining what people project on other people based on next to nothing.
@@vincevirtuaThey're both obviously high as shit in this clip. You can tell when people are, it's quite apparent.
@@seanscott7070 and again, obviously projecting based on next to nothing.
" Well it wasn't a band ,but it was a band . " I'm confused ,were they a band or weren't they?
