I LOVE MY BUCKEYES! Dunno how they are with mixed chickens, but they get along no problem free ranging with ducks and Chocolate turkeys, and cats and dogs, my dogs - others' dogs are the worst I have had the greatest loss from them - But any chicken can be predated by a dog, my Buckeyes have an AWESOME predator sense and reactions. My flock is about 10 hens and 2 roosters - I have had more roos per hen but then they tend to split the flock and range away into the wild. Even so they get along with each other better than any other roosters I have had. the Roosters look out, make alert calls, and either hide if coyote or fox or run *towards* the danger if avian, they have made several hawks regret their choices sorely! They are ALL very friendly to people but also don't fight each other, all in all very unflappable, as it were, not flighty, fighty, or mean. They have all their instincts intact and as adults forage for all but sunflower seed treats all year long and give eggs all year except November December and January because of the light. Some have gone broody, late in the summer, but they are really good mothers and the rest of the flock doesn't attack, because Buckeyes aren't like that. The only downside is you need to band them to tell them apart. IF you want to. I got mine from Privett hatchery in NM, via mail, no problem. The only issue was I initially got 20 hen pullets thinking with 90% accuracy I would get two roosters in the mix - I did not, the sexing was too good so I had to intentionally order some the next year LOL. Since my initial purchases I have incubated a bunch and don't need to buy any more save for a bit of genetic diversity in a few years but I've seen them each year in more and more hatcheries. Try them, they will love you and you will love them THANKS I love your channel.
I am new to chickens and got buckeyes and black australorps the they are only 3 months old but the buckeyes seem to come to you more. Even when i am not bringing food.
Loved the video! Exactly what I was looking for. Our family is getting chickens again (lost our Black Australorps to a filthy fox 2 years ago), and one of my coworkers said they loved this breed. I’d never heard of them prior. Our local feed store is going to have some in later this month. Just curious - do they do well with a mixed flock? We’d like to get three total birds - my Wife loves that they are mousers, but aren’t massive egg layers. Any suggestions on what 3 birds we should get? We’re for sure getting a Buckeye…maybe two, but I want at least one who can a) lay a lot of eggs, b) be sweet and human-friendly and c) can handle cold winters and hot summers in SW Idaho.
We are in SE Idaho, and I used to live in the Treasure Valley. I would go with the Orpington: sweet temperament, good egg layer, and tolerant of most climates.
Right on! So, we get worse winters - you get the brutal winters. I was checking out the Orpington - but seems like they get really big. We had Bacl Australorps originally, and they were amazing birds (until a filthy fox got them), but they literally destroyed many of my Wife’s ornamental plants and garden starts - we plan on keeping this new flock more confined; The last flock was strictly free range, but I was curious what smaller breeds would fit. May still go with an Orp, or Rhode Island Red…maybe even another Australorp. Thanks again, fam. Much appreciated.
I love RUclips! In Georgia for business training and I still get my Hobby Farm Guys fix… 😎 Beautiful birds! You guys really are going to get me in trouble next spring when adding 1, 2, maybe 20 to the flock! 😂
Beautiful birds
Yes they are
Alot of great breeds of fowl, but my favorite is them good ole Bickeyes
They are a great breed for so many reasons!
Thanks. I missed this.
You are welcome!
I'd never heard of the breed until a few years ago i picked up a few on a whim from tractor supply, now they're my favorite breed on the farm
I’m thinking of adding some to my flock in the spring.
I did the same thing, and the Buckeye quickly became my favorite also. This past December, I purchased 10 more chicks. They are a joy.
I've got a male and female on the way as well as a few speckled Sussex to accompany them! Very excited
You should be! Great birds!
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!

I have a mixed flock and have noticed different breeds are defiantly more apt to follow me. The Delawares in my flock are the followers.
