I accidentally stopped scammers scamming my mum, an elderly Italian migrant.
I have mum’s email logged on my phone and her bank was emailing her about unusual account activity. This alarmed me so I rang home, but it was engaged. I rang her mobile but it was engaged. I sent her a text, which she fortunately saw, told her it was me ringing dad’s mobile and to pick up. It was the classic scam where the scammers had just enough info to act as her bank, called her claiming to be the fraud department and got her to confirm her credit card details and other personal details. They had the script down pat.
They told her to stay on the line as they had sent police to the location that her card was being used. For some reason they also needed her to be on her mobile (pretty clear why) so had that tied up too.
Mum had the scammers on loud speaker, so I could hear the foreign accent and the BS they were feeding her. She put me on loud speaker and I was able to ask the guy a few questions, like the correct card fraud number, which he didn’t know and which police station did they send to what shop… he failed. I told her to hang up right away. The bank was the very next call and fortunately they were able to reverse the transactions that had been made moments before. New cards were organised. We’ve been on the watch ever since as they did get enough personal info for some other fraud.
Mum has now learned a valuable lesson and tells the scammer b*star*ds where to go when they ring.
We kids learned a valuable lesson too, we now have EPOA and co-sign rights on various accounts and utilities. My folks are still cash and cheque type people. It is a different world today, so it’s up to us to help them navigate the digital world.

Hi Badda, best to ask your accountant or the brokers as they will be able to give you guidance on that.
