I really have to hand it to the voice actress...she really nails the character. Naoto strikes me as someone who tries to say what she feels clearly...she struggles with emotion, yes, but her words are a direct reflection of what she feels. She may be intelligent and a master of deduction, but the other girls are beyond her in many many qualities. Chie is probably the most passionate. She doesn't just "talk" about doing things or find ways to solve problems, she is the one that makes things happen. She's mature enough to understand her role that she needs to take action where others hesitate, and doesn't cower from that responsibility. She doesn't make anyone else "take the blow" for her, because she's embraced the idea of protecting others and being the leader of action. She defends Yukiko, Takeshi, bullied boys, her friends, and everyone she feels needs protecting without question. That's who she accepts herself as, that no other party member has the courage or understanding to do. It's her ability to take action. If that isn't mental maturity or capability, then Naoto's inability to act certainly isn't. I don't have much to say about Yukiko because I find her rather bland, but I do like her willingness to be independent. That's a step towards maturity and self-capacity. I feel like she's getting there. However, I honestly prefer Naoto's qualities over hers. I have a lot to say about Rise though. Perhaps the character to run the most risk of being written off as a ditzy airhead, she goes to prove that she's anything but so. Rise is the most strong-willed and capable of the group, despite appearances. There is so much evidence to support the fact that she is the most capable of getting shit done. Yes, Naoto may be more deductive and introspective about concrete matters, but that doesn't necessarily translate to capability in getting stuff done. Rise treats her goals seriously and shows real capability in achieving the things she wants to. Like how she's able to rally the group into a confident performance at the Junes concert, put all her motivation into the beauty pageant despite not signing up herself, decide to return to showbiz out of will alone, and be upfront with her goals of being closer to the protagonist. Instead of falling down from exhaustion right after she overcame her shadow self like all the others, she exercised the strength of her will to stand up and help the others fight shadow Teddie, even when weak. She even worked her ass off to be a good actor/singer/dancer/model/media personality because she wanted to overcome her shyness and make friends. In fact, the reason behind why she's so openly forward with the protagonist is because she's one to give everything she's got and really go after what she wants. There's countless little things she says that really goes to demonstrate her wisdom, understanding, and maturity. She communicates her understanding of how to make achievements in the real world by saying things like, "I don't have dreams, I have goals". She justifies the motives of identity and conformity in a group by understanding that "there's no malice involved" and that collectivism in situations naturally breeds chaos. she has a sense of the importance of identity and individuality, understanding that people are made by the sum of their parts. I also love that line when she says "I didn't say anything pathetic like 'I'll do what I can...'" when talking about organizing the concert, declaring that she's going to do what she set out to. Her maturity is also reflected in how strong her sense of responsibility is. Rise HATES letting people down and always strives to do her absolute best by her friends and fans. Letting her fans down, especially the girl that sent her letters crushed her and was part of what motivated her to return to showbiz. She's constantly pushing herself to offer every last bit of support to her friends. She resolved to take action and support her new friends in Teddie's shadow battle, even when she needed the rest, voicing her concerns about the party and Teddie over herself. She gave up her pride and forced herself to come out of hiatus despite being sick of stage work by agreeing to substitute for Kanami and organizing a Junes event, all for the sake of Yosuke. Also, notice how she beats herself up and is always incredibly disappointed whenever she's unable to do her job or locate someone in the TV for the team, even pushing herself to the point of collapse in trying to help them. And need I even mention Arena Ultimax where she fights through tons of battles (even taking on motherfucking ELIZABETH) despite having no previous fighting experience all for the sake of her friends? None of this is meant to degrade Naoto herself, as she has her own merits of being a very intelligent and thoughtful person that is a capable of solving problems, a trait that is needed in any group. In fact, the various strength of all the characters are what compensates for each others' weaknesses which makes the team as successful as it is. I feel like the love for Naoto from the fanbase stems from the air of scarcity surrounding her affection towards the protagonist. The fact that she tries so hard to suppress her emotions makes them all the more endearing to players when they do see it. That's why you _think_ the things she says are more meaningful: because it's so hard for her to say it without truly meaning it. But what's to say that ANY of the other girls say anything less meaningful or authentic about their love for the protagonist? I wouldn't let attitude and personality alone define how meaningful a person's words are. It's the simple act of playing hard to get with your emotions to make them _feel_ all the more authentic and desirable. These "Naoto [or insert reserved character] glasses" are _a facade of sorts_ in making emotions seem convincing. It works wonders in accordance to the laws of attraction, but it doesn't at all correlate to the true _power_ or meaning behind the emotions. In the end, to say that Naoto exclusively holds these qualities above the others is, well, simply ignorant.
You know, its odd, even though you wouldn't really expect it, Naoto is one of the most overtly sexual/seductive characters in the series once you get into her relationship, even topping character's like Rise and the P4 Nurse(can't remember her name) at some points. Its honestly really interesting, because you would literally never see it coming given how her character was introduced.
It makes more sense when you consider her shadow self. Kanji, Chie, Yukiko and Rise all had very sexually charged shadow selves, meaning their feelings of sexual attraction and expression were part of that they were suppressing. Naoto's shadow, on the other hand, was devoid of any sexual innuendo, meaning she was always at peace with her sexuality.

Funnily enough, it's not too uncommon irl to find someone that is super introverted and shy but once you make the bridge the person becomes super sexual and open. Makes Naoto much more believable and nuanced than if she was just that closed about literally everything

Nope, rise is the youngest girl, though not by much. Both are born in 95 but Naoto's birthday is in April while Rise's is June. And I'd argue that rise is the most competent out of all of them in terms of being capable of getting shit done. Naoto may be the master of deductions, but that doesn't necessarily translate to a capacity to get things done. Rise treats her goals seriously and shows real capability in achieving the things she wants to. Like how she's able to rally the group into a confident performance at the Junes concert, put all her motivation into the beauty pageant despite not signing up herself, decide to return to showbiz out of will alone, and be upfront with her goals of being closer to the protagonist. Instead of falling down from exhaustion right after she overcame her shadow self like all the others, she exercised the strength of her will to stand up and help the others fight shadow Teddie, even when weak. She even worked her ass off to be a good actor/singer/dancer/model/media personality because she wanted to overcome her shyness and make friends. In fact, the reason behind why she's so openly forward with the protagonist is because she's one to give everything she's got and really go after what she wants. She's the only one in the group with that amount of assuredness, diligence, and capability in going after her goals, which makes me think that she's likely the most competent and reliable person out of the whole group (other than the almighty being that is the MC ofc). she didn't become an idol for nothing. it's because she is strong-willed, hard-working and one that takes initiative that earned her her prestige. That's why you _think_ the things she says are more meaningful: because it's so hard for her to say it without truly meaning it. But what's to say that ANY of the other girls say anything less meaningful or authentic about their love for the protagonist? I wouldn't let attitude and personality alone define how meaningful a person's words are. It's the simple act of playing hard to get with your emotions to make them _feel_ all the more authentic and desirable. These "Naoto [or insert reserved character] glasses" are _a facade of sorts_ in making emotions seem convincing. It works wonders in accordance to the laws of attraction, but it doesn't at all correlate to the true _power_ or meaning behind the emotions.
In the end, to say that Naoto exclusively holds these qualities above the others is, well, simply ignorant.

You know, its odd, even though you wouldn't really expect it, Naoto is one of the most overtly sexual/seductive characters in the series once you get into her relationship, even topping character's like Rise and the P4 Nurse(can't remember her name) at some points. Its honestly really interesting, because you would literally never see it coming given how her character was introduced.
Her mature voice definitely makes her lines more effective.
It makes more sense when you consider her shadow self. Kanji, Chie, Yukiko and Rise all had very sexually charged shadow selves, meaning their feelings of sexual attraction and expression were part of that they were suppressing. Naoto's shadow, on the other hand, was devoid of any sexual innuendo, meaning she was always at peace with her sexuality.

Funnily enough, it's not too uncommon irl to find someone that is super introverted and shy but once you make the bridge the person becomes super sexual and open. Makes Naoto much more believable and nuanced than if she was just that closed about literally everything

Nope, rise is the youngest girl, though not by much. Both are born in 95 but Naoto's birthday is in April while Rise's is June.
And I'd argue that rise is the most competent out of all of them in terms of being capable of getting shit done. Naoto may be the master of deductions, but that doesn't necessarily translate to a capacity to get things done. Rise treats her goals seriously and shows real capability in achieving the things she wants to. Like how she's able to rally the group into a confident performance at the Junes concert, put all her motivation into the beauty pageant despite not signing up herself, decide to return to showbiz out of will alone, and be upfront with her goals of being closer to the protagonist. Instead of falling down from exhaustion right after she overcame her shadow self like all the others, she exercised the strength of her will to stand up and help the others fight shadow Teddie, even when weak. She even worked her ass off to be a good actor/singer/dancer/model/media personality because she wanted to overcome her shyness and make friends. In fact, the reason behind why she's so openly forward with the protagonist is because she's one to give everything she's got and really go after what she wants. She's the only one in the group with that amount of assuredness, diligence, and capability in going after her goals, which makes me think that she's likely the most competent and reliable person out of the whole group (other than the almighty being that is the MC ofc). she didn't become an idol for nothing. it's because she is strong-willed, hard-working and one that takes initiative that earned her her prestige. I don't think any other P4 girl can compare to Rise in that regard.
