I remember reading somewhere that John was originally scripted to have a verbal answer to this question, but Martin Freeman knew he'd get his point across better with just a look. Either way the choice and Benedict's response to it are brilliant lol
From what I remember, in the book he says something along the lines of “Well, it seems... a bit preposterous.” Given that, smart choice on Freeman’s part to go with just a ‘do you really wanna know?’ look.
When he starts the show he truly does look ridiculously young!! Man idk what it is about this show but I can't stand the fact Sherlock just had magical powers of deduction. Like, in the books it makes sense and walks you along Sherlock through his process. How he got to conclusions and sometimes paying attention to details let you in on stuff sooner than the book reveals it. It's hard to explain the specific feeling the show gives me. But it's like he's a magician from Now You See Me. Like, it never states magic is happening, and it tries to play them off like the characters are just super talented preformers. But they are just doing literal magic that looks like stage magic. And Benny boy here is doing deductive magic that the show tries to make look like real deduction.
Technically, it depends on what you mean by deduction. In epistemology, deduction wouldn't work in this case. Deduction means that the conclusion logically follows from the premises. The conclusion is true by necessity. What he would be doing is induction, which would be that the conclusion is probabilistically true given the premises. Science is a field built on induction, not deduction. However, if you're talking about many colloquial uses of the word, then deductive reasoning means you take a general principle, and you apply it to a specific instance. In that case he is using deductive reasoning. Inductive reasoning would be you take a specific instance and you generalize it.
