LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Multiple investigations are underway into a series of deaths at the Gwinnett County Jail.
Eight people have died since a new administration took over in January 2021. That’s more than any other metro jail of similar size.
The deaths include at least one suicide, two drug overdoses, and one prisoner who suffered a ruptured ulcer.

Here's something not mentioned, and people aren't told. Half the Medical Staff (I.E. Doctors and Nurses) were people who started off in the private sector but were kicked out. They were people that got fired for things like stealing and/or using drugs, multiple malpractice suits, alcoholism, incompetence etc. These people couldn't get hired in any clinic or hospital, so the Government throws them a bone. Hires them cheap to work on prisoners. This is a system that's been a place for a very long time.

I went to school with a guy who was a complete degenerate and became a pharmacist because he was a drug addict. He later worked for the department of corrections after getting busted “mismanaging” the morphine.

True. Also some use the title "doctor", but they are merely nurse practioners, which is a notch above a RN. They prescribe medication like a doctor, as they are under the supervision of a doctor. The doctor visits to sign off on their dirty deeds once a month or longer.

I don’t know about this jail but I definitely know this can’t be a blanket statement. I worked for 14 years in a county jail as a correctional nurse and I did that by choice. I’ve worked as a nurse in numerous medical environments and I absolutely loved corrections and I worked with alot of great nurses. You have to have a heart for it for sure.

Why do we pay all this money in tax dollars to provide the necessary care, but then just let them die in jail for being suspected of a crime? Your callous attitude, the same attitude COs have, is why inmates die in state custody.

I thought about sticking it out in jail for a year. My bail was 120K which was even higher than the drunk driver's. I had to choose between an attorney or bail. Ended up pleading guilty for the probation. And the injunction meant I couldn't appear at my wife's killer's sentencing. But my victim impact statement was allowed. They want respect in the jail when they commit heinous crime in society?
Not to mention all the crimes that they commit in jail.
Two of the deaths were related to drug overdose that were smuggled in. Their own fault.
Imagine these offenders are violent assault criminals ranging from aggravated assault, armed robbery, murder, rape and crimes against children.
Their own despicable actions are disturbing and led them to jail and if they die there, then they die there. Hard to feel any empathy for these punk thugs. Let them rot.

Even those who are convicted of drug offenses hurt their own families significantly. No ONE is victimless.
Yes, many who commit crimes aren't in jail. That's true but I disagree that the majority of people these days who are in jail are there for victimless crimes.
      Especially these days.
In 2015, Nearly half (55%) of people incarcerated in state prisons were convicted of violent crimes.
      In 2022, it's even MORE.
Yes, it's true there have been innocent people who have been convicted.
But I am NOT part of the problem as you say but rather it's people like YOU who defend those who do NOT want to take responsibility for their actions.

I'm sorry but every single jail and prison need to be completely investigated about every single death in these jails. When any inmate dies they need to have a full investigation and pull every camera, let every guard or deputy on duty be put on leave until the investigation is over so they can't have " disappearance of evidence". They should have all the medical records as if he died of a ruptured ulcer which could have been operated on had the mother, inmate, anyone told he had issues with ulcers. Not saying this would have helped to save his life but could have given the information to medical staff to give him proper medicine.

I have a close family member who is currently in Gwinnett county jail, over a traffic ticket.. the court system is falling behind there. People who usually get locked up for minor crimes or for traffic , usually go through the court process and either get a bond or a sentence within a week, maximum 2. Now since covid, they are “short” staffed, court dates are pushed back or delayed for thousands of people. The inmates there are on 20+ hrs lock down because there isnt enough staff to let them out.. sometimes not at all. He hasnt formally been arranged for a sentence, and its been well over a year…. I honestly dont know what to do, because having someone you care about being put away like that for little next to nothing is detrimental to his family, business and mental state. It makes you feel like you cant trust police officers , CO staff OR the court system because you have no options other then to “wait” it out. How can you go against a system like the Court System? He had an undiagnosed medical condition with that size of a head. Probably internal swelling of the sort but that doesn't excuse his behavior cause how did he get in jail in the 1st place??? He most likely had the condition way before him being admitted.

I love how they showed his high scool graduation photo and then quickly whisper he was in jail to answer for "aggravated assault and weapons charges", so he was a choir boy, a boy scout and helped old ladies carry their groceries home.

      Honestly...hexwas never ADJUDICATED as guilty.
This is a real problem...we have RIGHTS. His right to a speedy trial...fair bail... none of those things are evidence...he was INNOCENT until proven guilty. Are you really siding with the jail? Bc simple 10 second blood work would have identified his condition. Not having $$$ is what he was guilty of!

“She’s waiting to read the GBI report” in other words, Yes of course she is suing as well as family members of the other deceased inmates... maybe not of the drug overdoses but the rest will try to get that check. It’s obvious.

Isn’t this the same jail that has the severely mentally delayed man who was there for charges the victim (his brother) did not want to even press (theft of a camera), but he ended up dying from medical negligence?

Sad and everyone especially blacks better open their eyes because we are also locked up on false charges so much that this could be your child. This is sad. They lock you up they are responsible for paying for 24 hour doctor and nurse on staff no if and or buts. It should be law 3 doctors 1 for every shift.

Different jail but when I was in a new guy came in and we started talking n dude was in hardcore pain n kept throwing up. He said it was due to some stomach problem he has and without his medication its extremely bad. The next day he hung himself due to the CO's not giving him his meds and he couldn't take it anymore. Nothing ever came of that. When I got out I tried to let others know what happened but it was just seen as another suicide by a mentally I'll person. He was 23

And the murderers will get away with it. Police in America are above the law and get away with everything if it isn't posted on the news. The news has a big chance to really start calling out the injustice and even better if it ends up on CNN
