Alan's case, is proof, something doesn't have to be graphic or violent to be harrowing. It's a case I've never forgotten. It's actually extremely upsetting to even watch now. The only bit of comfort we can take, is that he was found before he died, so had family with him. Also that surely the killer, didn't intend for him to die and that it will hopefully haunt them until the day they die.

    • @treasurehunteruk9718

Doesn't seem that way. Reading online there were more than one, with one returning at some stage. And as the police had to shoulder the door in, they were likely picked up on his way home. Odd.

@@user-zr3pj5tk7k Why couldn't they *at least* have just done in him with a silenced pistol, then ransacked his flat and left his dead body to be discovered weeks later instead of doing something like that to him if they wanted him to die? Just *beyond* sadistic and sociopathic to the extreme and one of the worst way for anyone to die at the hands of someone else. I hope Alan does get justice. But again, like a lot of these unsolved murders featured on this programme, certain things to me seem odd. It wasn't like Alan was completely alone. He had family and a huge circle of friends. You would think someone would *know* something was badly wrong and investigate if nobody had heard from him or he wasn't answering his phone or doorbell by the Friday after he was attacked and tied up, since he wasn't planning on going anywhere for the holidays. His sister also to me seemed estranged from him.

Jackie Haines was also the victim of serious crime. Her husband at the time, David Cook, was investigating the now notorious Daniel Morgan murder, which had exposed all kinds of police corruption and links to the Murdoch press. Members of the Murdoch press trailed Jackie, her kids and her husband, hoping to derail the investigation. They also tried to smear them by claiming they were having an affair - they had actually been married for some time, but she had not changed her surname. It led to serious pressure in their marriage. The Daniel Morgan case is very dark, and the recent panel inquiry into the murder described the metropolitan police as "institutionally corrupt".

also the whole marketing strategy of crime has changed. now it is reported in a way to provoke a response in line with barmy societal agendas. nor do we have criminals sending taunting cryptic letters to the police - that's out of fashion as the american zodiac killer fades in the memories of any likely copy-cat criminals. the milton keynes car park attack - jill dando says, 'hhhmmm', not exactly sarcastic but along those lines. it seems like the girl whose car he got into just sat there whilst he did so. if someone got into my car in broad daylight in a busy car park, i would have been out of there and calling him all sorts very loudly before he had a chance to tell me not to get out (i've still got a bent MK2 Astra key that was hastily ripped out of door/ignition in a scenario where i felt the need for a quick response). but this highlights the pros and cons of central locking - very suave in those days! the first lady had central locking so when she got into her car all doors were available to intruders - not good. why was the passenger door available to open on a bog standard mini metro? if she had been shopping surely that door was locked whilst she left the car. i've always thought that car manufacturers should put a second button on the key fob that just remotely opens the drivers door.
