Mark, I'm an old, petite, fit gal who just started on this barbell journey two months ago! Love your videos series (77?) for newbies!
But I must admit, I fell in LUST with you! I watch your videos knowing I'm not gonna do that routine but watching YOU does my body and mind feel more gOOder!😉
You make me smile! You have a great brain, body, and humble disposition!

Glad to get Mark’s take on landmine training. If you don’t have a squat rack for an attachment point you can cut an ‘X’ in a tennis ball with your knife, stick it on the end of a barbell and find a corner of the room with space enough for movement. If you can spend a little more but don’t have a squat rack, several mfg make a landmine attachment that fit in the center of an Olympic plate.

Landmine is good for static anti-rotation too. Stand with feet straight and arc the barbell side to side.. Strengthens ability to protect the spine against lateral flexion and stay upright while absorbing force.

I need to find me a place to construct a gym. I'd set up rings, kettlebells, clubs, maces, battle ropes, and yoga trapeze in it minimally. I'd probably set up barbell and a rebounder or two in there. Of course, it'd have a lot of space for things like crawling and general body movement.

I used to live in Incheon (Korea) in a working class neighborhood between the landfill and the titanium plant. We worked out in a clearing in the woods. We used a cart axle for a barbell and truck flywheels for plates. People played badminton with an imaginary net. Beautiful plentiful equipment and specialized space is excellent. Our clearing and our repurposed parts were beautiful too.

Anyone else having a just a wee bit of envy looking at this gym with hydra rack, plates everywhere, aerodyne off to the side and 4 unopened barbells up against the wall still in their shipping tubes... 😛

Mark what is your opinion on functional patterns and Naudi aguilar?

I think the first 3 weeks of his program is myofacial release.

Functional Patterns is incredible as a concept and for unlocking relevant functional movement for daily life … alas, Naudi Aguilar is not very good at representing his training methodology and is a little unhinged. Very contentious in defence of his training ideology. But he is a genius without a doubt. Functional Patterns can seem like a cult at the best of times. Although it’s changed my perspective on what is fitness training.
That aside, Functional Patterns has unlocked my ability to move better. And has taken me on a journey exploring my physiological engineering through new and effective training modals/patterns. Unlocked huge potential to move in a way that is aligned to our innate human movement capabilities.
Also, Functional Patterns has some very advanced Landmine movements that hardly anyone else has explored or even invented.
In contrast to Naudi Aguilar, Mark is a likeable nerd. And is far better than Naudi Aguilar at explaining the specific details with infinite credibility and universal application. And he isn’t a cult. Yet!;) Hoping that won’t happen as that’s why I left Functional Patterns.
I have an amazing portable Landmine by Purmotion called the Renegade Pro. I’ve had it for 12 years. Unfortunately they have stopped making this particular model as it was uber expensive to manufacture and had a hefty price tag.
Purmotion do make another cheaper version that is also portable and you just slot it into a barbell weight plate (or two) on the floor and slot in the barbell at the other end. It gives you full 360 rotation and unlocks so many exercise permutations.
Love the landmine along with Clubbells and Kettlebells. I take my landmine everywhere. Although, it’s caused many problems when travelling on airlines. And then having to explain it’s a “landmine” to airport security! That’s been a little dicey at times until I explain what it is…and it’s not an IED Landmine or pipe-bomb! The nomenclature is a little off!
