I've used milk to wash my hands before fishing, and taken baths with it to nutralize my scent before going hunting. My grandfather taught us this practice back in the late 60's.
I guess I’m lucky I can remember my father warning me about the negative effects of all these unnatural scents on fishing when I was a kid 45 years ago.... thanks dad👍👍
I have fished for over 40 years and this is the first time I’ve ever heard of this. This could be the best podcast you have put out. Awesome information
The anis oil yall discused about is a liquorice smelling oil. I still use it on my soft plastics (especially worms). I've also rubbed it on my hands, to hide my scent.
Something I want to share with you guys on fish scents as well. I've been experimenting with frozen baits like shrimp and greenbacks...i found that if you get a 5 gallon bucket and add the frozen bait with fresh saltwater plus getting a 2lb garlic salt mix but adding only 1/4 of it to the water...have them defrost and let them absorb that water till they start getting hard...makes wonders to the frozen bait. I tested it out down at the keys with my friend that doubted me leaving his frozen bait out. I heard from this Captain that swears by this...and let me tell...it works amazing...it revives the baits like you won't believe...they get hard as like you just almost caught it...and that garlicy smell makes the fish go nuts. My friend was amazed how well it worked. We started getting slammed left and right with that. It was like you cast land and they come after the bait like piranhas...we nailed like 30+ fish from Snapper, bonnnet head, catfish, grunts and 2 Goliath Groupers which we had to throw back...It'll be great if you guys try it and see if it works out for you as well, especially knowing frozen baits tend to be soft and mooshie when they're frozen...you'll notice the difference.
@@Saltstrong oh and btw I joined the Saltstrong family today...wow you're right guys! We better content and awesome stuff I see now...it's so worth it...im very happy to keep learning.
Just out of curiosity. How would wearing latex gloves affect the scent? Does it have its own negative smell track? Does it hold our natural human oils? Can you wash it in positive smell tracks to mask it and will it work?
Great stuff. This is why I won't use sunscreen then touch my rigs. I've noticed that it will keep me from getting bites. I'll spray everything with gulp scent. Once I had a good pompano bite. I reapplied sunscreen and touched my rigs and baits. And the bite shut down.
I’ve noticed negative effects of tobacco around fish but believe it or not I think they like weed. I blow it all over my lure and line and seem to catch more fish when I do. I’m being serious about all this, it is now a firm superstition of mine.
100% believe that something gets on a lure from a fish that makes it the hot lure. I've witnessed it too many times. Fishing literally side by side with friends and strangers, nothing going on...then one person will finally get one, and you'll see that same person catch fish one after another in very close succession. dozens of people using exactly the same lure, same color, size, casting it literally side by side. There is NO bottom structure in some of these spots. I've seen it happen all too often, and i've even been that guy on many occasions. One time i showed up late got 4 fish in 5 casts while others caught nothing for hours and they were right beside me doing pretty much the same thing. For this reason, i started tying fly material to some of my lure hooks just to see if it would hang onto whatever it was that wipes off a fish.. blood, slime, mouth goo, whatever it was.
Great stuff. I always knew scent was important. Stopped wearing cologne back in the 80’s because of it. But this definitely reminds me of the importance of scent in fishing. I have a bar of soap given to me years ago in my boat bag. It was advertised as fishing soap, so I’m going to have to pull that out again and try it out. 👍🏼
Tons of people use Ivory soap as bait for catfish. No science to back this up, but after I found out about that, I started taking a bar of ivory soap fishing with me to wash my hands while fishing. Seems to work well even after applying bug spray and/or sunscreen. If you’ve ever gotten either of those on your lips, common sense would tell you fish won’t want to put either of them in their mouths.

Cheese has lots of sodium which freshwater fish are attracted to. Yamamoto baits have high sodium formulations for that reason. I get less spit outs with hi-sodium plastics
I truly believe scent has lots to do with fish but I am not sure about smoke or gas being a negative! Good buddy of mine out fishes lots of people and he smokes like a chimney and stores his gear in his shop with oils/fumes all over! I often joke with him to rub my lures I swear he has some scent that fish just love!
Cheese is a popular bait for freshwater catfish (other fish, too??), used by both anglers and commercials fishermen. Garlic powder/salt is also used in some homemade baits.
As far as Gulp scents, it doesn't work better than putting some chicken on the hook here in Panamá. Gulp is made for very specific spieces, mostly found in North America.

I've always suspected that showering before a fishing trip, smoking, handling your tackle too much, and bug repellant all repel fish. I could usually tell a difference even at the same place, same time, same tide, same everything. Looks like I got a new book to read too. Great video.

Hey guys, my father is a biologist. Living in South Louisiana, we eat tons of boiled seafood. Dad discovered that wetting his hands then washing the with baking soda, neutralized the odor quite well. Of course, everyone knows it works in the fridge for the same reason. It may be worth keeping some in the tackle bag or on the boat. Being a smoker, I have to give it a shot. I'll report back with the findings. Maybe someone else has some experience with this.
Wow! I did not know all that about scents. My poles have been stored in the carport. My daughter-in-law smokes out there every day. There is also gas stored there too. Have not been getting many bites lately. I will change out all my lines and store them in the bedroom. No more bug repellent and I will watch when I use sunscreen.
Back in the day my Grandmother use to say it was lucky to split on the bate before casting, and on some occasions she would even spit chewing tabacco on he bate. I'm curious on your intake on this stragity. Does spit or chewing tabacco affect your chances on catching fish?
Great video. I totally agree about keeping all your gear and lures away from negative scents. What about garlic and salt as an attractant? It is listed as an attractant at many other places.
Did I hear you guys say that plasticizer detracts fish... plasticizer aka plastic softener aka soft plastic. The most fish catching artificial baits out there are made from this very thing. 🤷♂️

@@Saltstrong I used to smoke (nasty) cigars & caught more fish then those around me from shore most of the time, plus its a bug repentant. Could be just the anti-smoking radicals at work?
Thanks. Never knew all that. When beach fishing I grab wet sand & rub it in my hands mostly to clean suntan lotion off. Now I need to change everything. Thanks for all the info.
Shortly after the book came out, Berkeley made a fishing soap, and sunblock. I used the soap for years, until they quit making it. The sunblock worked, but smelled rancid. ....I've noticed that whoever drives the boat, especially a tiller outboard, or pumped the gas, always caught less fish over the years....Smearing your hands with bait guts and squid works great until you're offshore on a hot summer day. When you absentmindedly wipe the sweat off your face- well, odds are good you'll be leaving a personal chumline soon.
collect a bucket of fine sand to wash your hands with 😄 works way better than soaps and you got non oily hands to tie knots and handle your gear it also works pretty good for boat fishing when you reached a spot and dont need to touch the engine for a while 😄 you can also use it to get you cork rod grips nice and clean 😄 to get oil of lures you can give them really quick dip in some isopropyl alcohol and put them in water straight away to not damage coatings or rubber 😁
know I'm late to the party but excellent info on what scents repel fish, in general. In truth it's not new, read about it when I was young in the late 60s...however the depth of detail in this video is priceless to us fisher folk. Very appreciated to have... the smoking detail will help backup a big complaint I have with a couple family members (ugh, right? hahaha). So when I end up divorced which one of you has the couch in the garage for a broke down geezer?
I always felt like buying a new combo was bad luck, like you spend all this money on a new rod and reel but catch em on the old rod. Probably from me spooling line on using my fingers for tension, im gonna start using a rag to pinch the line when spooling.
What great information. Didn't have a clue. I have been making my own pompano rigs for surf fishing. I made a little soapy solution and put it in a spray bottle to spray the knots so they don't kink or curl. Works great but haven't been catching the fish we were before I started doing that now that i think about it. Spit it is from now on. Also after going to the dermatologist last week I got the suntan lotion and smeared it on my face and arms when fishing later that week. Didn't catch anything all day and my wife was. She uses spray on. I wonder if it will help if I break open a fish oil capsule and put a drop or two in the little zip lock bags I store my pompano rigs in?
Lots of very interesting stuff here!!! Awesome content! Interesting show trick we'd do growing up in naples we used to throw gum into water or sometimes just spit in the water around the fuel dock and monster jacks would slam the water.
Although I have only been fishing for a year I knew that the lotion, cologne, insect spray, gas fill-up or-and especially sweat ( Yeah, I sweat all over the line, lure...) whatever might be affecting my fishing. Now I know for sure! Best report ever!
I would have to question the petroleum comment made at the 14:50 mark. I use smelly jelly that's made with petroleum jelly and catch fish all the time.
would be curious about wd40 heard fish like it's scent. I'm not sure that they like it but it hasn't hurt my success, I spray it in my tackle trays to keep hooks and hardware from rusting.
I seen Anise attractant for fish.. now you telling me its a neutral. ok. glad i didn't waste my money. I do have garlic and shrimp scent dip and glow and Pro-cure shrimp scent. I will just wash my hands with my dip and glow. so my hands will smell like their food and my hands will glow like i have some special powers. lol.
You can tell who the more scientific mind is among the two! LOL Enjoy these guys, especially Luke's tests. He seems to understand minimizing variables in any experimental setting. I wish there was more info directly applicable to the Louisiana/Texas coast. Sure, some is directly applicable, but Salt Strong is definitely focused on Florida.
I just had one interesting thought regarding the idea that Northern Pike scent is a deterrent for Muskie. In light of this, how then would you explain the fact that Northern Pike and Muskie are known to interbreed (creating "tiger muskie")??? Anyone have any thoughts on this? I'm just curious how this is supposed to work? I used to live near a lake that was full of Tiger Muskie, and they are a very common species here in Ontario.
I have recently been using WD40 to wipe down reels after fishing. Any suggestions for a non-petroleoum spray oil that might be good to use wiping down gear afterwards?
Now it makes total sense why when i go to the Jetties, the person beside me keeps getting hits while i dont. Next time ill be careful when i apply sunscreen or when I do my rigs
Was this book strictly based on freshwater fish? I have noticed that Gulp is extremely popular for saltwater fish and that watching pro bass fisherman virtually never use Gulp baits. Red fish pros use it alot.

I know it is used in bass fishing a lot. it could possibly work inshore. never know till ya try! lol
Did I hear you guys say that plasticizer detracts fish... plasticizer aka plastic softener aka soft plastic. The most fish catching artificial baits out there are made from this very thing. 🤷♂️
About the smoking, you in left field on that, smoking never limited the amount of fish I caught

@@Saltstrong I used to smoke (nasty) cigars & caught more fish then those around me from shore most of the time, plus its a bug repentant.
Could be just the anti-smoking radicals at work?
Growing up in West Virginia we used to catch fresh water trout with nothing but cheese. Tight Lines
😮Awesome! 💪😂
@C. Parks Why care even if U smell like $h*t, as long as U r catching Fish!
Ok SaltStrong, heard it here first: SPF/Positive scent track hand sanitizer gel.... would sell like wild.
Just get unscented hand sanitizer and then spit on your hands after
this is fascinating. I'll try these here in Philippines got to observe how fish reacts on those positives
Thanks and let us know how they work!
collect a bucket of fine sand to wash your hands with 😄 works way better than soaps and you got non oily hands to tie knots and handle your gear it also works pretty good for boat fishing when you reached a spot and dont need to touch the engine for a while 😄 you can also use it to get you cork rod grips nice and clean 😄 to get oil of lures you can give them really quick dip in some isopropyl alcohol and put them in water straight away to not damage coatings or rubber 😁
Great info. Thank you for sharing this knowledge with us.
What about cleanse oil while cleaning your rod and reel Will that affect your chances?
What kind of oil or grease is best to use to clean reels with?
Wow. This makes perfect sense. No wonder my Grandpa rubbed his hands with mud, before tying his fishing knots.
Best fishing info that I have ever watched.
Thanks for making time to post the nice comment!
know I'm late to the party but excellent info on what scents repel fish, in general.
Hey guys love the info on the scent tracks keeps up the awesome work catch y'all later.
I put my gear inside the house. Helps eliminate any exposure to fumes, in your garage.
Found this very interesting, and believe the info will be very helpful in fishing!!
You are so hysterical.... Simon's like diamonds💯💢👌😁
💎💎
This is Salt Strong ! Very good info
Hope insiders will have a cheat sheet to sum it up
I always felt like buying a new combo was bad luck, like you spend all this money on a new rod and reel but catch em on the old rod. Probably from me spooling line on using my fingers for tension, im gonna start using a rag to pinch the line when spooling.
So aside from the musky not liking the pike scent can other fish distinguish the difference in a predator fish and a bait fish?
so....what if your fishing rainbow trout, and you roll the powerbait in your hands. Will that produce a negative scent for the fish?
Dear sir We have to use some lubricant and wd 40 to maintain pur reels, so what we can do if these lubricants will repel fish.? Thx
One of the best fishing videos ever produced!
How about dead shrimp ? Can I use that on my hands and gear for the scent ?
Sorry for the late comment/question, but does the plastic dyes for worm tails ETC do harm? Great video!!!
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment David!
I would have to question the petroleum comment made at the 14:50 mark. I use smelly jelly that's made with petroleum jelly and catch fish all the time.
So whats the. Best scent overall then for ocean an fresh water lets say flr trout??
Thanks guys! Salt strong member here. Great content.
would be curious about wd40 heard fish like it's scent. I'm not sure that they like it but it hasn't hurt my success, I spray it in my tackle trays to keep hooks and hardware from rusting.
I was thinking the same thing about penn reel cleaner.
I have heard and read that WD40 is made from fish oils. It may be good as an attractant, but it ‘stinks’ for anything else.
Excellent info - thanks so much. Any info on the distance that petroleum vapors need to be from your fishing gear? Thinking of garage storage issues.
Anise is that alcoholic beverage that your Italian grandparents drink. They also make special waffle cookies with Anise flavor. It comes from a plant.
This was very helpful 🙂
Great to hear!
Is that only tobacco smoke ?
Asking for a friend
In the uk we call it a 'scent Trail'
Man I didn't hear anything about coffee as a fish attractant
I wonder if Dr Squatch soap is a good idea or not?
Rub milk on our hands and don't wipe after catching fish I guess?
I am wondering if petroleum based (mono lines etc.) have scent trail & if the makers are aware & employing counter measures.
I have recently been using WD40 to wipe down reels after fishing. Any suggestions for a non-petroleoum spray oil that might be good to use wiping down gear afterwards?
"Dont know what Anise oil is"
Its the main sent in the Slam Shady plastics you push hard.
Thought's on the Pro-Cure Bad Azz Hand and Lure soap?
What hand soap do you recommend to neutralize human scent and use before handling baits, tying leaders, etc...?
Ivory bar soap. 90 something percent natural.
